  3. Back to Cordainer Smith for a moment, a strange thing happened today. I walked into one of the used book stores in La Grande (city motto: "if you don't like used books and coffee, don't bother coming by") today and found the previously mentioned Best of and Quest of the Three Worlds. Now I don't know whether to start reading or hold out until I find Instrumentality of Mankind and Norstrilia so I can be ready with the whole shebang...

  5. No, I think it was just eyestrain. Seems to be okay now. Nothing to see here, folks; move along...
  6. Gotcha on the info bar thing; that really blows it up! But I think the problem may actually be my eyes. I think perhaps I just spent a bit too much time on the computer over the last...oh shit...eleven hours...

  8. I'm not sure what I did, but all of a sudden all of the print on the board is much smaller. I know my eyes aren't what they used to be, but damn..this much change in just a few minutes? Anyway, is there any way to adjust the display on this forum only?

  11. Of course, I meant Count Basie's altoist of the same name Damn...
  12. Andrew Johnson Bill Clinton Merrill Beth Nisker (Those of you who grew up in the Southern U.S. know this already, but Earl Warren's first name was "Impeach"...)
  13. Don't you also get to shoot a guy? I was sure it included getting to shoot a guy. You're confusing this with the summer biathlon, where you're dragged on skis until you can manage to shoot the guy steering the boat...
  14. I missed the post on your first, so congratulations on that one, and good luck on this one. I guess the first one didn't cure ya...
  15. Well, let me jump in. My favorite would be The Big Lebowski, although I fully confess that part of it's charm is that I think I hung out with those people for a few years... I would also rate Oh Brother and Fargo extremely high. Millers Crossing I'd put pretty high, but not top tier, along with Blood Simple. Intolerable Cruelty I would also rank as an "adequate Hollywood comedy", as Kalo puts it, but I expected more from the Coens. Perhaps I was just overrated them, though. I'd put Raising Arizona about here as well. Okay comedy, but nothing worth raving about. The Man Who Wasn't There and the current Burn I'd put it the "don't bother to see" pile, something that shouldn't exist if the Coen Brothers were as good as their reputation. I must confess to not seeing Hudsucker, No Country or Barton Fink. Yet. The Ladykillers I have no interest in seeing, having thrown it into the trash bin I have labeled "Pointless Remakes". I mean, damn; the original was a classic...why bother?
  16. Okay, I've caught up with the entire thread, and have no idea what was burned, who saw what when, or if there even was a fire. I give up...
  17. Damn you! I'd never heard of this, and now...

  19. Can't say I actually hate it, but I think it's interesting that I don't remember it being thought highly of until after the Coen Brothers got big...
  20. Same here, although mine came from plunking my head between two speakers and blasting Meddle at a ridiculous volume. Gotta have that fan going! Damn, wouldn't it be great if this actually pans out? On the other hand, if we all had the hearing we used to have, we may have to revisit that "are you an audiophile" thread...
  21. Thanks for a serious response! It's the first I've received after asking that question over the last twenty years. Okay; I'll give it a shot when the budget allows.
  22. ...or have a cat who thinks it's great fun to jump down from a bookcase and play "spin the furball"...

  24. Well, considering some of the people I've seen wearing shorts, that's probably a good idea...
