IRL and Champ Car set to merge
Jazzmoose replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well, this might not make much sense, but which type of racing I prefer depends on how I watch it. On TV, I prefer NASCAR. Easier to follow, and you seem to get to see more of the race. But in 'real life'? Definitely the road coarse racing for me! My step-mother's brother (now dead) had a Formula One type car he raced (not big time, of course; I'm sure no one here has ever heard of him), and the most fun I ever had at a race was when I got to be the time keeper for him in the pits at a race in Seattle. Great stuff! On the other hand, the most boring time I ever had at a race was going with my uncle when he was into drag racing. Not a single turn and the race is over right when it gets started. Then it takes forever for the next "race" to start. Not for me! -

Sounds like something fun to see...two races merged into one. Sort of the ultimate demolition derby! -

I don't have sympathy for him. He's out of his mind. I agree. And that goes for the guy who screwed the dead deer as well. -

Depends on three things: 1) Do we know she's a woman, 2) Are her ebay offerings obscure enough to get our interest, and 3) Does Chuck get there first... -

Yeah, Pollock is worried about getting banned; they shut the whole damned board down on us! -
Anyone found a way to discard old VHS Tapes???

Here's the way I found: when you move across country after a break-up, simply 'forget' them in a rarely used closet. At least they haven't shown up in the mail yet... -
I'm not sure where you get that idea from. A central part of the study of history from at least 11 onwards is the critical study of source material to detect bias and assess reliability. The study of historical interpretation lies at the heart of everything we do in secondary school. My 12 year olds will, for example, study the 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' story to evaluate two competing interpretations - was he a glorious hero or a selfish fool. My 13 year olds have just been looking at the Great Depression to decide if 'The Hungry Thirties' is actually an accurate picture of all of Britain at the time - exploring the way that myths can actually obsure the complexities of what really happened. I'm currently preparing 17-18 year olds for a paper on the Cold War where demonstrating an understanding of conflicting interpretations of the Cold War and supporting that understanding with source references is vital for success. In what way does that sanitise, falsify or indoctrinate? I'd have hoped it was teaching the sort of critical thinking that we need in young people! Quite disappointed to be told I'm teaching a bunch of lies and propaganda. I think our disagreement reflects a big difference in the way history is taught in the U.S. and in Great Britain rather than any disagreement of history's value. Sounds like you're way ahead of us in this area. The history taught in the U.S. still contains such "undeniable truths" as the "fact" that everyone believed the world was flat until Columbus proved it otherwise and such. High school history (as far as I know) is still extremely sanitized in this country due to the fact that each state must approve school texts, and of course, the publishers are unwilling to alienate big markets like Texas. So we end up with history books that are designed to not offend the most conservative of states. I don't think they're still teaching that slavery was good for the slaves any more, but it hasn't progressed as far as it should.

It's odd to see that name with the label "newbie" next to it... Welcome! -
It was interesting; the moon looked like some other planet in an SF movie. But it sure didn't seem darkened like I've seen in "full eclipses" before. Maybe the paper here got it wrong?

In all honesty, I'm not sure history should be taught in elementary and high school anyway. All it does is teach the students that history is irrelevant. It's sanitized, falsified, and is nothing more than indoctrination. It has nothing to do with the actual study of history. History, prior to college, and even there unless you're a history major, is the only subject I can think of that doesn't even bother to tell you 'how it's done'. At least here in the states, the study of how history is studied is an upper level college course. An example of the misconceptions of how history works is the constant complaint about 'revisionist historians', as is there were any other kind. What's the point of writing about history if you're not bringing something new to the table?

Just what I was thinking, Berigan. I recently got my first negative on ebay, from a buyer who never paid, and felt that he could negotiate terms after the auction close. (He wanted my bank account number to do a bank transfer rather than paying by PayPal or money order/cashiers check as I require). I'm not worried about the negative; the comment makes no sense, and his current -3 rating tends to undermine his credibility. What I don't like is that, under the current system, he's burned three dealers already in his first three ebay deals. One more and he's booted off the site, which I think is what he deserves. Why eliminate feedback from the dealer? I don't understand why people think it's a great idea for one party to be able to comment on a deal and not the other.

Omitted from the published report: When asked by the prosecutor if the deer was a buck or a doe, Hathaway responded, "Hey, what do you think I am; some kind of pervert?" -

Well, the problem is, once you do it, you're kind of stuck. In the incestual (is that a word?) world of jazz bulletin boards, jazzmoose is pretty well known, but who the hell ever heard of Mark Combs? And once you're known by that name, you're just as "googlable". The different names on different boards I don't understand, although I used "Mrs. Anne Elk" on JazzCorner for a while. I don't think I fooled anyone, but then it wasn't my intention to do so. I think I recall Mrs. Elk--she was a dear. Thanks for the compliment; I'll have to send you some doe. Or at least a few bucks... -
The book Toxic Sludge is Good for You deals with this "PR handouts as news" problem; a fun read, if a bit depressing...
