$10??? Everytime I go by Supercuts, I see visions of Pete Rose in the seventies! No thanks! My barber recently retired and sold his business, so I've been "shopping". I had been paying $17 and tipping $3 (yeah, I know the 'don't tip the owner rule', but what the fuck...). I finally found someone who did a fantastic job last week. Great haircut, great beard trim for free. No smelly stuff in the hair. Still has Playboy's in the shop. (I don't read the thing anymore, but I find that, if you have short hair, an outmoded sexist attitude is a good sign for a barber! ) His price? $11. I'm sure it'll go up; he's just opened recently. So how much did I tip? Screw it; I gave him the whole $20.

Kenton Presents Set Going OOP
Jazzmoose replied to desertblues's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
You're probably right. The last few tunes on the first disc were, I felt, the best on the disc. I see that that's where the Holman stuff started. Maybe I'm just not cut out to be a Cooper fan. The only thing I liked much on the Cooper stuff was the baritone work. Since I just checked and see this is Bud Shank, I'm not surprised! -

Mine finally arrived today; it had been sitting at the local DHL center since the first of the month. I've only listened to the first disc so far, but I'm ah...underwhelmed so far. Naturally, I'm not going to make up my mind on just one listen to the first disc, but... -
If not then I can't post on this thread. I only have two boxed sets that could conceivably be appropriate for this thread, and the other one I refuse to mention, because a) I don't consider much of it rock, and b) it's music I probably should have left in my memory... Let's just say I like him better without Art and leave it at that! In all honesty, I don't like Rock boxed sets. I grew up with the albums, and the boxed sets (and expanded releases) just don't sound right to me. As I didn't grow up with jazz, boxed sets are fine there.

Serena Williams vs The World

I disagree. I think the problem with tennis is that they allowed the equipment to mutate and dominate the game. These huge oversized rackets are what makes the game so robotic, and I'm sure modern equipment greatly aids these "super servers" the game has today. Return the game to the equipment of say, no later than the midseventies, and the excitement will return. Though admittedly, a little personality would help. If I'd known Borg was the wave of the future... -
Many do it because they're hiding a bald spot. Sigh. A half answer that will mislead those who have all their hair. Yes, we wear hats to hide our bald spots (though I go with a cheap cloth fedora, not a baseball cap. I love to hear the whispered comments of "pretentious bastard!" ), but we're not hiding our bald spots from our fellow humans, but from the sun. Just wait until you guys are getting thin, you'll find out!

Wait a minute...I know I read somewhere that the constitution guarantees the right to arm bears, but puppies? -
I'd say that's exactly the point, Shrdlu, whether you realize it or not. (Though I must admit, the DNA on the moon thing had me laughing out loud! )

Aw, it's been all downhill ever since we climbed down from the trees anyway...

Hell, I'd love to go to Switzerland to see Andy Rooney! Um...as long as I didn't have to see him long, and no photographs were taken...

At the risk of being pelted with rotten vegetables and rancid fish...how 'bout Wynton's debut? ----------------------------------------- edited to point out the obvious; I don't mean Kelly... And this assumes you're comparing sidemen, not the leader...

Having gone through a big battle with serious depression not too long ago, I agree with you totally, Amir. This "why do they have to risk taking someone with them" argument is kind of odd, as it presupposes that the suicidal person is capable of rational thought. In most cases, I'd say their actions are pretty solid proof that this isn't the case. -

To quote the late, unlamented missing one..."you'd complain if you were hung with a new rope"...she can rub me any way she wants... Ahem. Pardon me; a little too much exhuberance there... -
I completely agree, Bruce.

Well...I don't know about that; I've heard a lot of odd charges of how viruses are transmitted, but it almost always boils down to opening an attachment. I never click on those "remove me from your spam" links primarily because I don't want them to know that it got through and that they've found a valid email address.

LeGuin is a treasure!

I agree Heinlein was a force, and some of his early short stories hold up ("By His Bootstraps" in particular stands out in my memory), but his adult novels just don't hold up for me. The only one I enjoyed in my rereads was Job: A Comedy of Justice, which of course isn't really SF at all. Friday was enjoyable in spots, but there was no point to it, or to many of his later novels. Pohl and Kornbluth (Particular Kornbluth!) were favorites of mine as well, but I just reread Merchants of Venus not too long ago, and it really wasn't that good in my opinion. Rest assured, however, that Dick is still on my approved list! Another (later) author that I sitll find engaging (although no more substantial than the others mentioned) is Allen Steele. Good nuts-and-bolts SF with human characters...

Humor is a valid way of dealing with the painful and the unexplained. Always has been.
