True, they don't protect at all, but some systems do affect the audio quality. So the consumer gets a crappier product, and the business doesn't get the protection it wants either. It's a "lose-lose" one...

The Blues is certainly represented on my shelves, but not nearly as well as jazz. I like blues, but don't know as much about "who is who" in the blues field. With jazz, I was able to take a class on the history of the music that gave me somewhat of a road map to search the field. Looking back, it was a pretty basic map, but it did help. With blues, once I get past Johnson, House, the two Kings and a few others, I'm pretty much on my own. Add to that the fact that particular types of blues interest me a lot more than others (I'll take Son House over B.B. King, thank you), and I'm sort of up in the air as far as where to explore. I doubt my blues selection will ever catch my rock collection, or even my C&W collection (although the C&W I listen to probably ought to be in the Blues section anyway!).

Berigan, I lost my mother to cancer, my stepmother, and now my dad's third wife is fighting it, so I can relate. (Like that helps!) I would echo Soul Stream's advice: find another doctor. Just like any other human activity, not all doctors are at the same level. There are bad doctors just like there are bad musicans. And your mother's doctor sure sounds like he's doing a lot of noodling with little content, ya know? Good luck!

Well, of course I don't listen to anything like Gino Vanelli, but it seems to me that anything I listen to that would cause me any embarrassment is stuff that people here dig. I mean, my Anita O'Day stuff would probably sound weird to people at work, but not to you guys... I dunno, if Nina Hagen counts, maybe I should mention my obsession with Lene Lovich. Just another thank you for the advice, guys. The set arrived yesterday, and I put the first disc on when we got back from dinner. This was the first time the wife and I actually sat down for a serious jazz listen together, so this one's gonna have memories to go along with it. (Okay, I think she was dozing a couple of times, but still...) Great stuff, and just what I was looking for. I snuck the first disc of the Bird set on next, but that lasted about half a minute before I got "the look". Oh, well... I'm trying not to skip ahead to the Kay Starr stuff, but I don't know...

I think it's easy for us nonmusicians to overestimate what artists are getting through the sale of their music. I heard an interview on KCSM with Greg Osby in which he jokingly commented about carrying his own bags, driving his own car, etc., his point being that his tour was a simple, by-the-band operation. I was thinking, fer cryin' out loud, this is a "name" musician, and he's not living easy? We look at what the pop stars are making from album sales and assume that everyone is at least getting a nice share of the pie. I honestly don't think I could ever be a "screw the artist, I ain't paying for shit" person, but I'm beginning to wonder if anyone other than Brittney, Beyonce, Timberlake, etc., is being hurt by this...

The problem with threads like these is that the next day I always remember at least one more film I'd put higher than any I mention, but here's a stab at my favorites, which probably lean too heavily on the big studio stuff...
