  1. Hmmm...the Benny Hill disc is sounding better and better.
  2. I'm not sure you would need a trip to Dr. Death after hearing that...
  3. Another vote here for The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance! Have you seen Flight of the Pheonix? (I think that was the title...)
  4. Well, of course every thread like this one needs the obligatory "maybe it will turn the kids on to jazz" post, so let's pretend this is it and move on to bashing this stinker of an idea...
  5. Hmmm. Other than Shrdlu's mention of Peter Gunn, I'm afraid the soundtrack discs/LPs on my shelves aren't getting much mention here. As for jazz or jazz-like, the only other I have is Black Orpheus. Other than that, my soundtracks run more to Oklahoma!, South Pacific and Damn Yankees... And I still haven't picked up Anatomy of a Murder or I Want to Live; somebody kick me!!
  6. pryan, I'd put it near the top of my list as far as general jazz books go. There's probably one or two I'd put higher, but I definitely liked Hard Bop. A lot of jazz books seem rather superficial and poorly written to me, but this one is a good read.
  7. I agree completly. Add to this the fact that any copy protect scheme is going to be a bigger hassle to the honest consumer trying to enjoy the product in a legal manner than to the pirate. Anything that can be encoded can be decoded, and with a financial stake in the matter, the pirate is going to make the effort. It flys in the face of logic, although that probably shouldn't surprise me.
  8. "Now it's time to spend money..." Are you telling me I was supposed to take the summer off from buying music? You jerks! Think of the money I could have saved if I'd known this!!
  9. Look at it this way, Dan: When I finally get a computer with a burner, and it's my turn, the only thing close to being obscure in my collection is stuff I've picked up from fellow board members. So, you'll be making up for my "come on, this one's too easy disc!
  10. Yeah, I bought it strictly to check out what Graettinger was all about. I've tried Kenton before (I'm not sure what, the "Ghastly Loud Concerto" or some such ) but was definitely underwhelmed. This one is impressive!
  11. That is the perfect comparison!!
  12. I totally agree with you. Jazz CDs go in and out of print so fast, compared to pop and such that I just don't see the point to this. Plus, as you say, there are plenty of avenues for tracking down OOP stuff. As for the Mosaics, I could see their point if they were limited to the point that they sold out in a matter of months, but calling a product "limited" that takes three or four years to sell out is just a marketing tool, not an actual limit...
  13. I just picked this up a week ago; pretty impressive stuff. On the other hand, it will probably remain my sole Kenton disc...
  14. Okay, well, I can see why suicide might seem to be the answer in some internet situations...that or gnawing your connection off to escape...
  15. Taken from The Week (Sept. 5) Chatrooms of death: Internet sites that promote suicide have sprung up in Japan over the past year, feeding a suicide rate double that of the U.S. At least 32 people, mostly in their teens and 20s, have killed themselves in small groups after meeting one another online and downloading instructions on carbon monoxide poisoning or other methods. Some experts blame explosive growth in unemployment and rapid changes in Japan's economic structure. Today's youths are "lost and confused," psychiatrist Rika Kayama told The Washington Post. "The long-held direction and goals of Japanese society are collapsing around them." But police say the ease of text-messaging and the instructions on the Web sites are also to blame, as many of the "Internet suicides" were not depressed and seem to have decided on the spur of the moment to kill themselves.
  16. Hmmm....according to Gary's post in the "Boxed set" forum, he went with J.J. Johnson, the AEC box and a Sonny Rollins disc. Let me see if I can figure this out now...
  17. Hey, those are better odds than the California Lottery! (No, not the governor one, the money one!)
  18. Vibes, I just told my wife about your post. She agrees with Chaney.
  19. Does this mean you have a stash of Blue Note vinyl waiting to hit eBay?
  20. Starting this week on Thurdays at 10:00 PM Pacific Time, station KCSM (91.1 FM in the SF Bay Area, or at KCSM-FM on your computer dial!) will begin a weekly show devoted to free jazz and Avant-Garde. Naturally, I haven't heard it yet, so I don't know how good it will be, but I thought some of you might want to take a chance with me and tune in!
  21. I'm going the "wait for the expanded versions" myself. Hope I'm not disappointed, but since LOTR was THE book of my teen years, I probably have expectations that can't be reached...
  22. You know, this is really silly (and I'm glad you posted first, Jim!) but my first thought upon hearing this news was that watching The Simpsons won't be the same... I can't say that I'm a big Bronson fan, but he's certainly had some killer roles. I think he would have been even bigger if he hadn't fallen victim to typecasting.
  23. So are the Archie Sheep CDs any good? Or are ewe just trying to pull the wool over our eyes?
  24. Uh...oh, that damn cat! It's gone again!
  25. It better not be! It's not like I have a choice.
