  1. I suppose it's possible that they found the one judge in Chicago with a weakness for 'shine and possum stew, but I admit, it's highly unlikely...
  2. Another Village Vanguard vote; it's the set that takes you across the line from jazz dabbler to jazz fan!
  3. Hey, for those of you who don't like Morrison, it's your loss. I guess now I know how the Kenny G. fans feel like when they run into a crowd of jazz snobs...
  4. Oh, come on, Jan; the guy's just misunderstood! From the article: "Holt said jail time was not warranted because Ligue has a limited criminal history, including burglary, a felony, as well as domestic battery and several DUIs." You don't want a Boy Scout like this to suffer any permanent damage, do you?
  5. Without a doubt, professional baseball should ban Jethro and Cletus from any and all games, from the rookie leagues on up. Well...maybe invite them to a new version of "bat day" as the guests of honor.
  6. Oh my god...I think I just got a woody!
  7. Had to go with the obvious, Whisper Not. But I'm glad to see Killer Joe on the list!!
  8. Bah...kids today have no respect!
  9. Personally, when I hear anyone talk about VU being underrated, I assume they mean "at the time they were around", which no one can deny is true.
  10. Picked mine up yesterday, of course! As a proud supporter of the Wassamatta U. alumni society, how could I not? Anyway, the whole Rocket Fuel story line will be new to me, unless I saw it way back when, and I'm looking forward to it. I assume the Boxtop Bandit story line is the same one that was on the six volume VHS release a few years ago that I have somewhere, but it's a good one. Dave sure nails it as to the voices; the announcer is the most noticable to me. Everything seems to be subdued compared to what I'm used to on the first disc. It's sort of like watching the Tracy Ullman Simpson spots; everything isn't quite right yet, but the spark is already there. I sure hope they don't take forever to get the rest of these out; I can't wait! Does anyone know how many seasons there are to look forward to?
  11. I would definitely put Exiles as the last good Stones album. I also lost interest in the Who after Who's Next. (I thought Quadrophenia was more enjoyable as a movie than as an album!) I must admit, though, that Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath is probably my favorite Sabbath LP... But then I'd rather listen to the Kinks anyway.
  12. Jeez...I'm still trying to get my Mosaic order together. Time for Berigan to bring back his "are you rich?" thread from the BNBB!
  13. I've heard a couple of songs. I'd describe them as...interesting. I'm not really a fan of this type of project, though. Reminds me of those old stinky "Juke Box in the Sky" songs from various genres, if you know what I mean.
  14. Looks like I'm late to the party as usual, but Happy Birthday, guy!
  15. Actually, my point was comparing the relative importance of Bird and Diz to the Who, but now I'll have a bunch of angry Who fanatics jumping on my case. Can we just pretend I didn't post anything in the first place?
  16. Then I apologize for my "Dayton 500" answer, Dan. Seriously, I'm sure its obvious to everyone that we aren't "bosum buddies", but jeez, this is too much. I'm hoping that its just misdirected humor, but in any case, enough is enough.
  17. Interesting to compare this thread to the news of a new Bird/Diz concert discovery...
  18. Good point. How else can one explain polyester leisure suits?
  19. Dayton 500. Now can we delete this thread?
  20. An intriguing idea, but as a "technologically handicapped" person (otherwise known as one without a CD burner) I guess I'd pass, as I wouldn't be able to hold up my end by supplying a disc. Then again, if this computer gets just a tad flakier...
  21. DrJ, I agree that it's a publicity stunt, but there's nothing inherently wrong with that. I'm sure there are people out there who assumed they wouldn't be welcome at an African-American church and will hear this and decide to give it a try. (I agree with the rest of you that it's unlikely anyone will take the money.)
  22. You know, I saw this guy's stuff at Jazz on the Hill in San Mateo this year; the Coltrane stained glass was absolutely amazing!
  23. I definitely agree, Dan, no doubt about it. It just amazes me how often he seems to be in the studio. I can understand his being in demand, he's fantastic, but he must have to take a day off once in a while!
  24. Man, what a bunch of old farts! Of course, I turned 13 late in 1970, so I guess I'm one of 'em... Unfortunately, I didn't catch the jazz bug until much later in life, so I have no memory of listening to jazz in the seventies other than my cousin's Mahavishnu Orchestra lps, but as far as looking back goes, the two names that stand out for me are Sonny Stitt and Sonny Criss. Seems like they should have been past it by then, but I think they were doing their best stuff in the seventies.
