  1. I thought maybe he'd mention Cecil Payne's solo on "The Big Head." I love that one note solo.

    Wounded Bird

Wounded Bird (reissue) titles currently discounted at Dusty Groove.
  3. Shipping confirmation e-mail received today! mjzee — I hope you receive your shipping confirmation soon!
  4. A member here (in this thread!) kindly steered me in the direction of this fine single-disc compilation, which is exactly what I was looking for. Sound is very good. The music is blowing me away. Much recommended!
  5. Funny — that's my story too. Two years as a jazz studies major, and then off to a different state and different program. That said, my own music school experience was positive overall. I learned that I couldn't really improvise, but I also learned that I was a competent classical musician. (Not a particularly encouraging revelation in a jazz studies program. Plus, repertoire for classical saxophone? Not so much.) My roommate at the time was legally blind and had perfect pitch. You could play a nine-note chord, and he'd (almost instantly) tell you all the notes and what inversion. That freaked me out. Was I supposed to be able to do this too? I started taking creative writing classes.
  6. I finally ordered the new Mobley Mosaic, my first Mosaic order in 10 years. I forget — does Mosaic send out an e-mail when they ship? My credit card was just charged, so I'm guessing that the set is now in motion.
  7. For the Ra reissue at least, it does say: "Recordings licensed from ESP Disk N.Y., N.Y." Does that mean anything?

    Paul Bley CD

That Japanese reissue is decent — while way different sound-wise than the 90's Black Lion CD — but I bet this new hathut reissue has even better remastering. Peter Pfister has done amazing work with recent Ayler reissues.

Man, you were walking a thin line. The Jazz Police are sensitive souls. They don't dig Bösendorfers.

    Paul Bley CD

    Yes, and these too!

Gateway indeed. First you're listening to Nat King Cole, and before you know it, you're listening to Cecil Taylor. As if we needed more proof that jazz is dangerous.
  12. Nice find!
  13. Damn. I've always loved Cobb's playing on Wayne Shorter's first record.
  14. It's a double album from a live recording with dancers. A lot of Ayler themes in the mix. The CD issue is rare. The music is ... noiseful bliss!
  15. At least they attempted to retain the original typeface ...
  16. Yosuke Yamashita Trio with Gerald Oshita: Arashi (1977).
  17. I'm down for either of those box sets. Pre-ordered!
  18. Excellent! It's "one" for Shirley, but it also sounds like it's one for Vick as well — he lets loose. Looking forward to picking this up.
  19. I missed out on all of these sets, but have collected Walker, Spann, and Hopkins on individual discs. Slightly off-topic (for a Betty Carter thread), but are there any recommendations for single disc overviews from Milburn and Brown? In other words, if you could only purchase one disc a piece from these two artists, what would you choose?
  20. I'd like to hear a remastered set of her Bet-Car recordings, including anything that was left off previous releases. Probably won't happen, but I'd buy it!
  21. Wonderful to see/hear the different interpretations, let alone to see into so many different piano rooms/studios!
  22. I'm looking for TOCJ 50152 in good condition at a fair price. Please PM if you have any leads. Thanks! (Also open to trades if you'd like to share a want-list.) I have some Hank Mobley SHM-CDs for trade ...

    Numero Label

The Rupa Biswas record is a lot of fun. But it's not half-off at DG. The Fern Jones is good too, albeit in very small doses. The Cult Cargo series is worth checking out as well! $8 is a pretty good deal on those. YouTube has a lot of full albums from Numero, for those who don't Spot-i-fy.
