  2. I like how this Oliver Nelson thread has morphed into a discussion of disco. I'm there! For me, one of the finest disco records is Arthur Russell's 24-->24: If ever there were a case argued for "avant disco," this would be the record I'd put before the judge. Any fans of Russell here?
  3. Sold! In the post tomorrow. Thanks.
  4. I am letting go of my Elvin Mosaic. • box - like new • booklet - like new • 8 discs - like new (discs 7 and 8 still sealed) • $230, includes U.S. shipping • International shipping at cost • PayPal OK
  5. Correct. The Japanese disc is in (exquisite) stereo. (Album cover above for illustrative purposes only. ) "Elegy for A Duck" — Ron Carter and Grady Tate are The Dang on that track. Really something else.
  6. True. My experience with Maximum Rare Records of Japan (ftfym65), however, has been hit-or-miss. This seller doesn't necessarily have all the items he lists as in stock. He does have rare discs — no question there — but if you're ordering (buy-it-now) a disc that's, say, from two years ago — e-mail first to check that it's actually in stock. Just a heads-up for those posting here. I'm not discouraging shopping with Maximum Rare; I'm just trying to prevent some (potential) frustration for members here. I have purchased a few SHM-CDs from this seller without problem. Shipping is slow though. In contrast, the credit card purchase goes through right away.
  7. Fans of Mr. Garnett need to hear Andrew Hill's Lift Every Voice. Even if you don't like jazz choirs. (Sorry; not on Muse.)
  8. Yes. Oh yes.
  9. Whoa. I just finished listening to the entirety of UCCI 9222 — the 2011 Japanese SHM-CD edition of this record. I must say: this is one of the best CDs I have ever heard. So many things could go wrong — and didn't — with the mastering of this album. A big band — heck, an orchestra! A fairly close-miked soprano saxophone. Result? There are no ear-splitting peaks (highs), the dynamic range is huge (loud to very quiet), and Nelson's soprano is beautifully recorded, with much "air" around the horn. I experienced no noticeable ear fatigue, even at high volume. It was an absolute delight listening to this small plastic platter. This recording might also qualify as having the best recorded sound Ron Carter has ever received from a microphone. Who knew?!
  10. No. This current issue is its first appearance as a single compact disc. It sounds great in this SHM-CD incarnation. Carpe! (Even if you're not a fan of Steve Ellington.)
  11. This: http://www.jazzlists.com/SJ_Label_Prestige_7000.htm is a helpful site that simplifies and categorizes most (all?) of the issued Prestige recordings (along with other labels). It has that functional "at-a-glance" utility that allows one to see what LPs were from what series.
  12. Bill Pierce is so-so on it, but it has some of Wallace Roney's best live playing from the period. The McCartney cover is dispensable, but the rest is a good gig.
  13. Original cover?
  14. I'm looking forward to the Prestige 7100 SHM-CD series (if there is one). Two reasons (at least): Beautifully recorded. Has Frank Wess. Has Paul Quinichette. Also some guy by the name of Coltrane. Jackie. And the Coltrane guy again.
  15. My favorite: Kunst Bauer (i.e. Art Farmer) on Teo Macero's What's New?
  16. And if you could settle for vinyl, there are even more ... And all along, I never knew "Victor" was short for Victoria. The bikini explains ... West Coast Jazz?
  17. Hits the streets tomorrow.
  18. Carpe. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SONNY-CLARK-TRIO-THE-45-SESSIONS-CD-JAPAN-IMPORT-SEALED-TOCJ-1617-/360861956434?pt=Music_CDs&hash=item54050c7952
  19. True. That said, I especially wouldn't want to be without any of the McLean titles. Jackie's work for Prestige/New Jazz unfairly gets overlooked in relation to his output for Blue Note. Makin' The Changes is a particular favorite. Did anyone else here notice that there's a new UCCO (prefix) reissue line coming out in May? They're not SHM-CDs, however. Later Prestige titles, including Bobby Timmons' session with Wayne Shorter.
  20. Found it! http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/artist_Terry-Pollard_000000000152625/item_Terry-Pollard-Rmt-Ltd_5687161
  21. I first read about the trio with Richard Davis and Joe Chambers in 1996. I always wondered what that trio would sound like. Now we have a chance to at least hear it. Is Juanita Giuffre still with us? I dig her painting "Yggdrasil" — I believe it was supposed to be the cover art for Free Fall, and then was relegated to postage-stamp size. Now if we could hear the Giuffre-Don Pullen-Cecil McBee trio ... (I know; too greedy).
  22. Where did you read this? (Not doubting, just wondering about the source.) Two of my all-time favorite improvisers. I wouldn't think to put them together, but who knows ...
  23. Nice to have Chappaqua Suite out in a new Japanese edition. Plus — Errol Garner's Paris Impressions. I have both pre-ordered.
