  1. Around 83-85, I was working in a warehouse and we had to take turns with the boom box, there was a mix tape with this tune on it. This was on the tape too:
  2. Institutionalized Sometimes I try to do things and it just doesn't work out the way I wanted to. I get real frustrated and I try hard to do it and I take my time and it doesn't work out the way I wanted to. It's like I concentrate real hard and it doesn't work out Everything I do and everything I try never turns out It's like I need time to figure these things out But there's always someone there going Hey Mike: You know we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately. You know, maybe you should get away and maybe you should talk about it, maybe you'll feel a lot better And I go: No it's okay, you know I'll figure it out, just leave me alone I'll figure it out. You know I'll just work by myself. And they go: Well you know if you want to talk about it I'll be here you know and you'll probably feel a lot better if you talk about it. And I go: No I don't want to I'm okay, I'll figure it out myself and they just keep bugging me and they just keep bugging me and it builds up inside and it builds up inside. So you're gonna be institutionalized You'll come out brainwashed with bloodshot eyes You won't have any say They'll brainwash you until you see their way. I'm not crazy - institutionalized You're the one who's crazy - institutionalized You're driving me crazy - institutionalized They stuck me in an institution Said it was the only solution to give me the needed professional help to protect me from the enemy, myself I was in my room and I was just like staring at the wall thinking about everything but then again I was thinking about nothing And then my mom came in and I didn't even know she was there she called my name and I didn't even hear it, and then she started screaming MIKE! MIKE! And I go: What, what's the matter And she goes: What's the matter with you? I go: There's nothing-wrong mom. And she goes: Don't tell me that, you're on drugs! And I go: No mom I'm not on drugs I'm okay, I was just thinking you know, why don't you get me a pepsi. And she goes: NO you're on drugs! I go: Mom I'm okay, I'm just thinking. She goes: No you're not thinking, you're on drugs! Normal people don't act that way! I go: Mom just give me a Pepsi please All I want is a Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me. Just a Pepsi. They give you a white shirt with long sleeves Tied around you're back, you're treated like thieves Drug you up because they're lazy It's too much work to help a crazy I'm not crazy - institutionalized You're the one who's crazy - institutionalized You're driving me crazy - institutionalized They stuck me in an institution Said it was the only solution To give me the needed professional help To protect me from the enemy, myself I was sitting in my room and my mom and my dad came in and they pulled up achair and they sat down, they go: Mike, we need to talk to you And I go: Okay what's the matter They go: Me and your mom have been noticing lately that you've been having a lot of problems, you've been going off for no reason and we're afraid you're gonna hurt somebody, we're afraid you're gonna hurt yourself. So we decided that it would be in your interest if we put you somewhere where you could get the help that you need. And I go: Wait, what do you mean, what are you talking about, we decided!? My best interest?! How can you know what's my best interest is? How can you say what my best interest is? What are you trying to say, I'm crazy? When I went to your schools, I went to your churches, I went to your institutional learning facilities?! So how can you say I'm crazy. They say they're gonna fix my brain Alleviate my suffering and my pain But by the time they fix my head Mentally I'll be dead I'm not crazy - institutionalized You're the one who's crazy - institutionalized You're driving me crazy - institutionalized They stuck me in an institution Said it was the only solution To give me the needed professional help To protect me from the enemy, myself What does it matter i'll probably get hit by a car anyway
  3. ... It's the first time I've been mentioned in a list like that! Wow...I had no idea you were Yoko Ono! That's why I have 24/7+ to post on this list.
  4. Y'atta talk to Morton 'bout that. Oops, too late. I almost bought a viola at a guitar show in New Jersey a fewyears ago. I coulda ha my own John Cale jet engine. good evaluation Clem.
  5. 'til midnight EST. I'd don't know if I'll make it, PS is making me snoozy...
  6. I'm planning on being obscure, but getting a lot of press and then moving to Az. for the weather. Then 20 somethings can release CDs of my vast catalog of unreleased works that they have never heard and have been such a profound influence on them and their lives.

maybe I wasn't making fun, I was a kid once too. we're all just human.
  8. It should be kept alive. I hear it as one big ball of wax, but the scene is so competitive in NYC. It gets pretty ugly.
  9. I don't think you're full of shit Chuck. I'm starting to find out out that a lot of folks don't understand where Kyle is coming from...

    teen hormones...
  11. The uptown crowd were the composers at the music schools like Julliard and Columbia. The downtown crowd would be the composers who were performing in lofts post-'61. Later the free improv/free jazz crowd showd up. Should call 'em the NYC school, class of 75-89 and be done with it. In the blog post he pretty much says Zorn is very retro and not making much history. You might want to check out Ganns previous writing on the subject. Still, this might not be the best forum to discuss this, but I thought I'd toss it in.
  12. He's one of the most unique guitarists to come out of prog rock if not rock or jazz.
  13. The original Downtown scene wasn't full of improvisors, but composers. From Kyle: Ouch! I realise that maybe the big O isn't the best place to discuss this article, but i thought it's interesting all the same. Besides, I like that list that starts with: ... It's the first time I've been mentioned in a list like that! What's this so called avant-garde you talk about?

No trains? No bicycle? If I took lessons, my parents would have driven me. But I didn't. I remember taking a bus from North Brunswick to New Brunswick, NJ and then walking across Highland Park to Edison to pick up strings at Lou Rose. I didn't realise the walk to the train station was, and still is shorter. - North Brunswick is south of New Brunswick. I don't know why. - You must live in the sticks. Around the NYC area I still take mass transit to the cool shops. - Guitar Center is totally clueless, parking their ass on highways I have to drive to. For fun, buy a guitar magazine there and then call the manager when you get home and complain how they charged you tax on the magazine. They can't do it.
  16. But then I think I've blown the another guitar budget for this semester, if not this year.
  17. Same here. If I wasn't broke, I'd be all over that. I can hold back, I really dig that Epiphone. Still thinkin' 'bout a G&L ASAT. Was looking at Hamer gtrs last week. Great solution for the Gibson's-are-expensive problem.
  18. I wish all the computer users I deal with in the real world were as thoughtful as you Jim.
  19. I hate when that happens...
  20. Worries about "Downtown" music. (NYC) http://www.artsjournal.com/postclassic/arc...301.shtml#97719 In the end it's about prespective. I do like that list.
  21. There's a couple of boots at http://www.easytree.org that are just amazing. One of my great regrets is I never heard that band live. That Summer there were all sorts of cool gigs going down, I opted to check out the Bill Bruford Group with the unknown John Clark instead of the LoG and Gentle Giant. $$$ was an issue at that age.
  22. That's the group I saw at Washington Sq. Church when I bought the photo. I also heard them a few nights at the World Financial CEnter (next door to the WTT), probablly the year before.
  23. That's the best one of the Soundscapes. The other's IMOP don't do it for me. Soundscapes are digital (I think so, synth controled by guitar, digital delays and harmonizer). Frippertronics are analog guitar, fuzz pedal, tape delays that include tape hiss, wow and flutter. A lot of unusual artifacts build up in the delay.
  24. Fripp & Eno -> Evening Star solo -> Exposure (his days in NYC, inbetween '80's Crimson & '90's Crimson) Frippertronics -> God Save the Queen, Under Heavy Maners, As the Power Falls.
  25. He get's even less credit than Ornette. A damm fine blues/rock player in my book.
