A horrible mistake by the goalie but I don’t think the result would have been any different. France is marching through Latin America. They started at the bottom of the Southern Hemisphere, marched northwards. Following this geographical progression, Brasil is the next one up -
Larry’s second sentence, for me, explains it all. Rouse worked for Monk. The others didn’t. When you work for someone else, while you may have your point of view, ultimately your boss is setting the agenda.

It’s a shame Britain doesn’t have a combined team. It would be a heck of a team. This match is going as I expected it, unfortunately. French are too good. -

Cataluñans (at least the nationalistic ones) don’t care much for the Spanish team. As far as the rest of the country, you can hardly blame them. They should be playing today. -

I somewhat remember it but do remember that a lot of the Spanish speaking people I encountered in NY were pro Argentine. Speaking of Argentina, the ref in the Uruguay France match is Argentine. I wonder what the French think. Cavani is not starting; he’s on the bench. I just read in The Guardian that Diego Godin, who is marking Griezmann, is godfather to Griezmann’s daughter. That should be interesting. -
Forgot to mention that one. I think it’s outstanding.

Social call as played by them is a great tune. I’ve heard a few others do it but not as well, imho, of course. This thread is a bit strange with notions of submission, master/slave, etc. Those are loaded words in our society and without knowing more of how these men operated — unless we do and are completely on solid factual ground — I’d hesitate to use them. Otherwise, it’s all very speculative.

I looked at the Delmark site and it says Billie James. The site says 1969. I happen to own another disc the three of them made together, Made for Each Other.

It could be. I will have to see if I can find some cuts online.

I remember him, vaguely, from my childhood as a stylish pianist. I didn't necessarily think of him as a jazz pianist (not that I thought in those terms at the time).

I don’t think it’s quite like that. More like besting a parent or a big brother. In the 19th Century, following independence, they were economically influential. In addition, many English and Irish emigrated to countries like Uruguay and Argentina. I used to live in Uruguay and there were some Uruguayans who had Anglo names but couldn’t speak a lick of English. I also think that you can’t underestimate the effect of the Falklands War, especially for Argentines like Maradona (not forgetting of course that the war was started by a military regime trying to prop itself up). -

Perhaps some of the other discs were ruined and not salvageable. -

The Colombians play a rough brand of football at times, perhaps they feel that since they are outmanbed, it’s the only way they can equal the playing field. I just remembered how they treated Neymar in 2014. It’s a bit of a shame because they played a nice game against Poland. In retrospect, all in all, it’s probably better that England went through. Maradona, considering his antics of 1986, is hardly a credible source. This may sound strange but I think Latin Americans — and I lived there when I was growing up and was a Latin American history major — feel this one more because of their history with England. I don’t know they’d feel the same way if some other European country had beaten them. -

Andrés Cantor Thinks Everything Sounds Better in Spanish Andrés Cantor calls football games for one of the Spanish networks in the US, Telemundo. His voice is very recognizable and he has been calling World Cup games for forever it seems. Compared to him, other announcers sound tepid; no emotion. He thinks games sound better in Spanish and I agree. I listen to most of the games that way. The interviewer asked him, as follows: “Q. If soccer sounds better in Spanish, what else sounds better in Spanish? A. Everything. Life.” Naturalmente! -
I thought so too but he is almost 90.

According to Marca, Perez, the Madrid president, and CR’s agent are supposed to be meeting in a day or two to discuss his future. Madrid denied the Mbappé report but I don’t think anyone believes them. -

I guess we will see you when they release you. Hopefully, the authorities don’t subject you to constant listening of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.

According to latest news reports, the likelihood of Cavani playing is almost nil. I think Uruguay were going to have a tough time beating France with him. Without him, the odds will be stacked against them. -
I’ve actually heard football players make that argument. Darrelle Reavis was in the middle of a heated interview several years ago with a local sports jock, Mike Francesa, and he made the comment before hanging up on him.

We are in the middle of a sports smorgasbord, what with the World Cup moving into its decisive phase, Wimbledon taking place and the Tour de France starting Saturday. I don't fully understand everything about cycling but I do enjoy the spectacle, especially the sprinter stages, not to mention the lovely views of the French countryside. -

I'm sure you are more knowledgeable than I am and I agree that it would have been better to have him than not. For what it's worth, the following is from The Guardian's Fiver: "Jordan Henderson even nodded to tradition by botching his penalty in the shootout but before that the dependable midfielder had innovated by collapsing to the ground and appealing for urgent medical assistance after having his chin stroked by Wílmar Barrios: if a Brazilian had done that, we’d be saying ‘stop that, Neymar, you utter git.’"
