The art of collecting vinyl: please just let us do
Brad replied to Pim's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I enjoy collecting vinyl. Yes, it is fun to rummage around in the stacks and discover something. I also still buy and listen to CDs. Mostly, I listen to CDs in the car and vinyl at home. When I rediscovered vinyl in 2019, I went a little crazy and bought Tone Poets of albums I have om cd. I no longer do that and try not duplicate what I have on cd. I also hardly buy new vinyl; it’s just too expensive. There’s a new company called Gammaut that is re-issuing the Mode catalogue at $50. Many seem to think it’s an ok price (shipping included) but I guess I’m frugal. The only new vinyl I purchased lately is the second Sinatra Tone Poets and that was definitely worth it. Mostly I purchased used albums and barely ever pay more than $20. I’ve been frequenting Whatnot and found some really good records. -
I was at two record stores in the last few days and there were plenty of copies.

Thanks for the suggestion. Normally, I never shovel but because we were supposed to get 20 inches or so and I was concerned tge snow guy woukd need a backhoe, I did some shoveling while the snow was falling. Felt fine until a day later.

Chiropractors is not something I’ve ever believed in. Unfortunately, I made it worse by doing some shoveling in February. Do a lot of stretching daily.

Have never felt old in my head. Unfortunately, my back ain’t cooperating right now so until I get moving in the morning, that drags me down.

Only one of two albums he made. The other (Indian Summer) was recorded by Chuck.

I have finished reading two thirds of Tisma’s trilogy novels about WW II and the Holocaust in Novi Sad, Serbia. Excellent but harrowing.

This doesn’t take into account the people who post about jazz at Hoffman.

That’s too bad about Larry. I imagine it’s a function of life advancing to its inexorable conclusion.

I don’t think there’s enough material there for a Mosaic.

My first exposure to Bird was through Phil Schaap and then I purchased the Yardbird Suite that I mentioned awhile ago. I then followed that with The Complete Dial Sessions on Jazz Classics (which was a very useful set), then a large Savoy and Dial set from one of the Spanish companies, which I sold when Savoy issued the Complete Savoy and Dial. Like you I have a lot of live stuff, plus the Mosaic and the 10cd Verve set and anything else that comes out that may be interesting. Stash put out some interesting CDs that I have.

Yes, that’s a Select. The Keystones are sufficiently distinct from his earlier BNs that it doesn’t make sense to join them together in a regular Mosaic and if you take out the Keystones there’s not enough there.

I still say get the Complete Savoy and Dial from 2000. There are a couple on Discogs for $70 and $58. A steal in my opinion. If you don’t like alternates or false starts, just skip over them.

I just picked up the Willis Jackson one from Dusty Groove.

I purchased six of those OJcs as well as a couple of other items I hadn’t pulled the trigger on yet. Nothing I wanted was out of stock. I would have purchased more but others I was interested were a little expensive, in my opinion.

I know a lot of players are into it but to me it’s not like the World Cup. That has significance.
