Has anyone checked out the new recording by Brian Groder? It features Groder on trumpet and flugelhorn, Sam Rivers on flute and saxophones, Doug Mathews on bass, and Anthony Cole on drums. I was not familiar with Groder before this date, and picked it up largely on the strength of the other players. I like it a lot, and it's recorded rather well. for those who don't know the story, here's an excerpt from an interview in the May 2003 issue of Straight No Chaser: SNC: Was there a particular experience in you life that caused you to embrace the faith [buddhism]? WS: When our daughter [iska] was born she had some immunisation shots and six hours after she had them we saw that in her cot she was jerking. We found out later she had brain damage. As time went on, while I was out on the road, I would hear that my wife had to drive my daughter to the hospital because my daughter would have seizures, this happened many, many times. Herbie Hancock’s daughter was born around the same time and Herbie’s wife and daughter and my wife and daughter would be together some times when the seizures started. Herbie’s daughter was vaccinated by the same doctor's office.

i like to separate sex appeal from sax appeal. my vote goes to claire daly, a helluva bari player. i spent some time with her at a gig at cleopatra's needle. she's charming, funny, and very appreciative of her fans. so yeah, i guess i find her attractive too.

She told the RW: "I'm here because I love Horace. I love Cecilia [his wife]. I love all the kids. We had a wonderful time back then [the '60s and early '70s]. We were like...we were revolutionaries, and we were warriors, and anything that would uplift the African-American, an American, we were for it. That's why we did things for the Panthers. That's how `Seize the Time, the Time is Now' came in. Horace did the music, Elaine Brown did the lyrics. But anything that was activist, we were there, from colleges to parks. Horace always kept a house for the musicians to go and play at. And any musician that came through town and didn't have a place to stay, they could lay their head..."

has anyone ever tried to use the exact audio copy software to burn a copy of a free jazz recording? i have, and more times than not, i've run into a brick wall. when eac scans music, it slows down the reading process when it encounters possible sync errors. with most music that's fine. with free jazz, however, eac frequently misinterprets dense passages or frenetic solos as errors. today, it ran for over 12 hours trying to read through just one track of willliam parker's the peach orchard - and it still couldn't do it! more than anything, i find this situation rather funny. it takes me back to a time when i couldn't or wouldn't open myself up to appreciate freer froms of music. i used to think as eac does, that these less obvious forms of expression are errors, mistakes, random noises. i guess that's how a lot of jazz sounds to many people. so, do you think i should bring this fact to the attention of eac's creator? maybe request an updated, avant garde-friendly version of the software?

what, you mean they prefer someone else's idiocy to our's? actually, i think there's something missing here on the board. something that might get more people to actively participate in discussions. what we need...is a mascot! any nominations? photos or illustrations welcome

i agree. to focus on the sound quality of such historic recordings at the expense of the artistry contained therein is like saying you can't appreciate the little lady below 'cause she's missing a few limbs.
