The practice of piercing the flesh, then pulling on or hanging by pierced body parts has been a part of Hindu culture in southern India for thousands of years, nearly as long among the Sufi of the Middle East, and for hundreds of years as a part of religious ceremonies of Native Americans. Viewed within its proper cultural context, it is arguably a valid practice. When seen outside of this social context, it indeed seems quite weird and aberrant. Okay, that's my professional opinion. Personally, I think it's icky!
