to each his own, i guess. i saw pretty much the same band under iverson's name at the vanguard last year and thought the music was so-so.

Looking for: Marcus Belgrave "Gemini II"
robviti replied to rockefeller center's topic in Offering and Looking For...
have you folks ever contemplated contacting the artist himself? i purchased some japanese imports directly from harry allen for a fraction of what they cost online. belgrave is a visiting professor of jazz trumpet at the oberlin conservatory of music in ohio. here's his address and office phone number: Marcus Batista Belgrave Visiting Prof of Jazz Trumpet Conservatory Wind/Brass/Perc Robertson Hall Oberlin, OH 44074 Office Phone: 440 775-6675 and here's a link to his faculty webpage: marcus belgrave. what the heck, give it a try. what can it hurt? -
as a regular, although not high-volume, ebay buyer and seller, i consider these fees part of the "price of doing business." i wouldn't feel right charging these fees on top of those already quoted in the auction. i probably wouldn't bid on items that carried a "buyer pays all fees" clause either. what's next? should i charge the buyer for gasoline and wear and tear on my car as i deliver his item to the post office? how about a percentage of my monthly internet bill for the time it took me to list and regularly check on my auctions?

according to lois gilbert, the administrator at jazzcorner, people who wish to help pay mr. stubblefield's medical expenses can do so by sending money to the following address: John Stubblefield 163 Ludlow St #4B New York, NY 10002

funny, i had the exact opposite reaction. i found the whimsical mood of the video with its cartoon-like scenery (including a cardboard acoustic bass!) a welcome relief from the usual all-so-serious narcissistic videos i typically see.

that's why i included a definition in my post. very often, threads like this one offer posters an opportunity to say "i don't like that guy." their opinions are perfectly valid, of course, but i think they miss the point of the thread.

Overrate \O`ver*rate"\, v. t. [imp. & p. p. Overrated; p. pr. & vb. n. Overrating.] To rate or value too highly. Using this definition, I nominate Dave Douglas. I like some of his music and have enjoyed his live performances, but the adulation that many heap on him is, um...over-rated.

There have been a lot of rumors flying around for the past few weeks. The Regattabar is my favorite place to see jazz - the Blue Note isn't. I'm not panicking yet, but I'm not overly optimistic either. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Blue Note to take over Regattabar bookings By Steve Morse, Globe Staff | May 28, 2004 Blue Note International Inc., which operates seven Blue Note jazz clubs internationally, is expected to take over booking of the Regattabar in Cambridge. The club has been booked by local promoter Fenton Hollander and his firm, Water Music, for nearly 20 years. Officials at the Charles Hotel, where the Regattabar is located, did not return repeated phone calls yesterday, but a hotel management source said, "Blue Note is coming in, and everyone just wants to make an announcement at their own pace." Official confirmation is expected within the next few days. Steven Bensusan of Blue Note International could not be reached for comment yesterday. Hollander said he had heard the news, adding, "We're presuming it's a done deal." The last Regattabar shows he has booked are Rebecca Parris on June 12 and John Scofield on June 14 and 15. He said he'll start booking elsewhere, especially at local theaters. "We're forced to be competitors now," said Hollander, who just confirmed Carol Channing at the Berklee Performance Center Dec. 5. "I still need to earn a living. I don't intend to stop that," Fred Taylor, who books Scullers, the other main jazz club in the Boston area, said he anticipates a "battle of economics" because Blue Note will try to double-book acts into New York and Boston. "It's a scenario that I'm not looking forward to," Taylor said. The Blue Note club chain, which is not affiliated with Blue Note Records, operates clubs in New York, Milan, Seoul, and four in Japan -- Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Nagoya. The Boston jazz community is eager to know what changes Blue Note may bring to the local market. "We've had two outstanding impresarios here in Fred Taylor and Fenton Hollander," said Boston-based Ted Kurland, who manages Pat Metheny, Roy Haynes, and Gary Burton. "I'd hope that the Regattabar, which has a good tradition, will continue to be active and innovative, because right now I think we still have one of the strongest jazz scenes in the country." © Copyright 2004 Globe Newspaper Company.

i just got a copy of autumn leaves by the great jazz trio featuring hank and elvin. it's quite beautiful, and elvin's understated excellence serves as a reminder that he could do it all.

count me as another fan of charles davis. i'd like to recommend his most recent solo outing: blue gardenia

Guess who I sat next to at the Jackie McLean show
robviti replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
you could've asked him if he was chinese. that question has been buggin' me for years. -
for various reasons, i think a good many of the polls on this board are rather inane. actually, this is the only one i've ever voted in. B)

the online magazine inmotion has two interviews with jon jang you might enjoy reading. here's a link to the magazine's interview page: interviews with jon jang/james newton and jon jang/francis wong

On my way to see Jackie McLean and the guys.
robviti replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
jackie may "on" or he may not. i'd be very surprised if anyone can honestly say the same for moncur. he hasn't had the chops for many years (i don't think he was ever a very good improvisor). btw, don't ask jackie if he's white until the end of the show. you'll be disappointed if you're thrown out of the club before then. -
given how long we've been waiting for the ervin date, i think this would be a fitting title!

Sometime prior to 1 million years ago early hominids exited Africa and dispersed into other parts of the Old World. Therefore, Jackie McLean is black, you are black, I am black, etc.

No!! Not you Lon!!! Buying an sacd player??? You've definately gone over to the dark side!!!

just to let you know, i did get the 521BEE and i like it just fine. while it might not be every bit as good as the models i originally considered, it's definately an improvement over what i had. in the end, i applied Bjorn Erik Edvardsen’s “10/10 Rule” (BEE, get it?). it states that the ideal for high value products is achieved when it costs 10 times more money to get only a 10% increase in performance. thanks to all of you that took interest in my search.

Planning to go to any Summer Jazz festivals?
robviti replied to Leeway's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
i'll be in nyc at the end of the jvc festival in june. i want to catch the lew tabackin/randy brecker tribute to coleman hawkins at birdland. i also plan to check out shows in the city featuring harold mabern's trio, the anthony wonsey quintet, and maybe buster williams' group at the jazz standard. later this summer i plan to take in the day-long fesitivities in newport, r.i. on saturday, august 14th. quite a lineup they have there. finally, real jazz returns to newport! -
why is that?
