thanks for the explanation. i get rankled when people equate pedophilia and other sexual perversions with homosexuality. the vast majority of sex offenders are heterosexual. straight people who are intolerant of gays are comforted by the mistaken belief that these individuals are simply perverts, the same as child molesters, exhibitionists, voyeurs, etc. when you have a president trying to limit the constitutional rights of a group of people based on their sexual orientation, people like myself realize that such misconceptions have potentially serious consequences, and shouldn't just be laughed off as harmless ignorance. btw, did anyone catch this story of mob justice from last week? A man standing trial for rape was killed by a group of women and children in court in the city of Nagpur in central India on Friday, reports say. Initial reports said about 14 women and several children forced their way into the courtroom and knifed the accused, Appu Yadav, to death. The attackers then escaped from the scene of the crime. Police, who have launched an investigation, admit that they were caught unawares. However, the BBC's Zubair Ahmed in Bombay says they also admitted they had to throw a security cordon around the defendant last week when he was jeered by angry women as he arrived in court. Yadav was facing 24 counts of molestation and rape.

it looks like those of you who live near nyc will have a chance to hear gambarini perform with the dizzy gillespie alumni all stars at the blue note 10/19-21.

i don't get it. what's the connection between a sex offender and a homosexual?

do you really have to ask? it's berigan, after all. he's only sorry that it wasn't michael moore, or at least someone who looked like him, that got caught peeping. hate begets hate. violence begets violence.

that's too bad if the iridium shows replace their longstanding gig at the fez. the fez is a cool place to see them perform, and it's easier for an out-of-towner like myself to extend a weekened stay in the city by one day. don't know how i'll make it to a tuesday gig.

i assume you're talking about the upcoming shows at the blue note from 10/19-24. you forgot to mention that the allstars will also feature clark terry on 10/22 & 23. here in boston at the regattabar, the lineup will be slightly different: Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Allstars 10/27-30 FEATURING: Randy Brecker, trumpet Jackie McLean, sax Slide Hampton, trombone John Lee, Bass Dennis Mackrel, drums Mulgrew Miller, piano

i recently saw george cables with lew tabackin and randy brecker during the jvc festival in new york. despite his frail appearance, he played wonderfully and was quite engaging after the show.

i've always thought of sony special products as a budget reissue program. although this label facilitated the release of some classic titles like anatomy of a murder, the catalog mainly consists of pop compilations and greatest hits packages. amazon.com lists 157 sony special products titles featuring such diverse artists as ellington, lawrence welk, molly hatchet, and david johansen!

the 521BEE is not a discontinued model. i'm familiar with the workbench, however i'll most likely bring my deck to audio lab in cambridge, an authorized dealer/service center that worked on my nad receiver a few years ago.

there are three used copies in new or very good condition available for around $7 from three sellers in amazon.com's marketplace. there also is a sealed copy for 11.98. here's the link: burrell cd -
some of you might remember a thread i started a few months ago about buying a new cd player. with some help from other board members, i decided to purchase an nad 521BEE. well, after 90 days of use, i'm beginning to notice a problem. although the nad plays new discs flawlessly, it is less forgiving with some of my used cds. these are not discs that have been dragged through the dirt, like some library loaners. rather, the cds it tends to skip on might have a tiny scratch on them. mind you, these same discs seem to play fine in my dvd player, my computer, and in my car, but not the nad. since i own quite a few used discs and i plan to purchase many more in the future, this is definately a problem. i can't find any evidence of this being an inherent problem with this model. so, is this something that can be repaired, or does it demand replacement with another unit? any advice would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

i had my brother check the tickets, and they say the gates open at 10am. i'm glad we got reserved seats at the mainstage so we don't have to get there that early. i'll ask a favor of anyone going to the festival on saturday: if you have any nightmares as far as traffic is concerned, could you please post it here or email me? thanks a lot. and to anyone from the board who's going sunday and wants to say "hi," i'll be in seat 13 or 14, row kk. that's like the second to last row on the left facing the stage. hey, it's better than sitting on a wet blanket, right? B-)

i've checked the website and reviewed the faqs, but for the life of me i can't figure out when the gates open on saturday and sunday. the music starts at 11:30am, but i want to get there earlier. anyone have this information?

i'll be attending sunday's festivities with my older brother (the one who turned me onto jazz 30 years ago). i hope it doesn't rain! B-)

as someone who generally dislikes the rvg reissues, the preservation of the original master tapes matters a great deal to me. my hope is that someday, someone like steve hoffman will have the opportunity to remaster these titles in a more competent manner.

one thing though: he has several discs listed at a lower buy-it-now price of $24. the description in some of these auctions says shipping is $2 in the united states, others say $2 for the first cd and $1 for each additional disc. these auctions also include the statement: "Free shipping by registered mail." maybe i'll email him and request clarification/correction.

i've also purchased a few jrvgs from this seller. he does any excellent job of packing the cds to avoid possible damage.

personally, i've enjoyed mccoy's association with bassist george mraz in recent years. to my ears, mccoy has been playing less cluttered lines lately that sound more thoughtful and fully-developed than his famous "ham-fisted" style of yore. i think mraz's spare, infinately melodic accompaniment complements this shift in mccoy's playing. i wonder if this newer trio will have the same dynamic. i've always associated clarke with a busier, more flamboyant approach to the bass, a style that was copied by the lesser avery sharpe, mccoy's bassist for many years. then again, cobham is known as something of a "basher," which also seems to be mccoy's preference in terms of drummers. just once i'd like to hear mccoy perform live in a solo format so i can fully appreciate the depth and breadth of his artistry.

giants of jazz cds can easily be found on the internet. tower records lists 87 titles from this label and barnes and noble lists 49 items, many of which are in stock. you can also find these cds on half.com and probably other sites as well.
