  1. i'm sure this will be a key point of the obit featured in high times magazine.
  2. i had my brother check the tickets, and they say the gates open at 10am. i'm glad we got reserved seats at the mainstage so we don't have to get there that early. i'll ask a favor of anyone going to the festival on saturday: if you have any nightmares as far as traffic is concerned, could you please post it here or email me? thanks a lot. and to anyone from the board who's going sunday and wants to say "hi," i'll be in seat 13 or 14, row kk. that's like the second to last row on the left facing the stage. hey, it's better than sitting on a wet blanket, right? B-)
  3. i've checked the website and reviewed the faqs, but for the life of me i can't figure out when the gates open on saturday and sunday. the music starts at 11:30am, but i want to get there earlier. anyone have this information?
  4. i'll be attending sunday's festivities with my older brother (the one who turned me onto jazz 30 years ago). i hope it doesn't rain! B-)

    Blue Note SUCKS!!!!!

as someone who generally dislikes the rvg reissues, the preservation of the original master tapes matters a great deal to me. my hope is that someday, someone like steve hoffman will have the opportunity to remaster these titles in a more competent manner.
  6. one thing though: he has several discs listed at a lower buy-it-now price of $24. the description in some of these auctions says shipping is $2 in the united states, others say $2 for the first cd and $1 for each additional disc. these auctions also include the statement: "Free shipping by registered mail." maybe i'll email him and request clarification/correction.
  7. i've also purchased a few jrvgs from this seller. he does any excellent job of packing the cds to avoid possible damage.
  8. personally, i've enjoyed mccoy's association with bassist george mraz in recent years. to my ears, mccoy has been playing less cluttered lines lately that sound more thoughtful and fully-developed than his famous "ham-fisted" style of yore. i think mraz's spare, infinately melodic accompaniment complements this shift in mccoy's playing. i wonder if this newer trio will have the same dynamic. i've always associated clarke with a busier, more flamboyant approach to the bass, a style that was copied by the lesser avery sharpe, mccoy's bassist for many years. then again, cobham is known as something of a "basher," which also seems to be mccoy's preference in terms of drummers. just once i'd like to hear mccoy perform live in a solo format so i can fully appreciate the depth and breadth of his artistry.
  9. the coupon states that it "cannot be combined with any other discount offer."

  11. i caught some of your show on the way back from rhode island. a fitting tribute to a great artist. thanks steve!
  12. giants of jazz cds can easily be found on the internet. tower records lists 87 titles from this label and barnes and noble lists 49 items, many of which are in stock. you can also find these cds on half.com and probably other sites as well.
  13. happy birthday hank and kenny! i saw hank jones last weekend on a double bill with clark terry. he performed several solo pieces then joined terry's band for a few tunes. he continues to play with great beauty and eloquence. we spoke briefly between sets, and he seemed genuinely moved when i offered my condolescences over elvin's passing. do not miss the opportunity to see him live!
  14. for the sake of argument, which blue note recordings by the horace silver quintet between 1956 and 1968 do you consider nonessential?
  15. btw, why does freddy refer to himself in the third person? are you/he related to this man? rob wanna know! Claude, While XRCDs are unlikely to gain mass market appeal, I think the K2 technology will continue to grow in popularity.
  16. here are a few of my comic book heroes: and finally, a self-portrait of the artist:
  17. i don't know if i should or sometimes it's hard to tell with this kid.
  18. if they do reissue this set, i hope they change the track sequence to coincide with the original lps, with bonus tracks at the end of each album. i never understood why they chose to place them in strictly chronological order for the original box.
  19. perhaps "can't play anymore" is a bit of an exaggeration. however, i've seen bartz play in three different settings over the past year (sphere, eric reed's dolphy tribute band, and the tolliver big band), and i was sadly disappointed with his loss of chops. it happens to the best.
  20. from Fantasy's website: "Developed by JVC, the 20-Bit K2 Super Coding System integrates three important digital audio functions: 1. The JVC 20-Bit, 128 times over-sampling high resolution analog to digital converter. 2. The JVC K2 Super Coding resolves the high resolution 20-Bit signal to the 16-Bit compact disc format while retaining the integrity of the low level information. 3. The JVC K2 Interface effectively eliminates time base jitter in the digital data stream. The end result is a compact disc of extraordinarily higher resolution than that of today's conventional compact discs. The 20-Bit K2 Super Coding System allows the listener to hear every subtle sonic nuance from the breathing of the musicians to the explosive crack of the snare drum. Enjoy!"
  21. The practice of piercing the flesh, then pulling on or hanging by pierced body parts has been a part of Hindu culture in southern India for thousands of years, nearly as long among the Sufi of the Middle East, and for hundreds of years as a part of religious ceremonies of Native Americans. Viewed within its proper cultural context, it is arguably a valid practice. When seen outside of this social context, it indeed seems quite weird and aberrant. Okay, that's my professional opinion. Personally, I think it's icky!
  22. they're 12.98 at buy.com, with free shipping on orders over $25. from time to time you can find coupons for buy.com at 2save247.com.
