happy birthday hank and kenny! i saw hank jones last weekend on a double bill with clark terry. he performed several solo pieces then joined terry's band for a few tunes. he continues to play with great beauty and eloquence. we spoke briefly between sets, and he seemed genuinely moved when i offered my condolescences over elvin's passing. do not miss the opportunity to see him live!

for the sake of argument, which blue note recordings by the horace silver quintet between 1956 and 1968 do you consider nonessential?

btw, why does freddy refer to himself in the third person? are you/he related to this man? rob wanna know! Claude, While XRCDs are unlikely to gain mass market appeal, I think the K2 technology will continue to grow in popularity.

Looking For Dexter Gordon Complete BN
robviti replied to ralphie_boy's topic in Offering and Looking For...
if they do reissue this set, i hope they change the track sequence to coincide with the original lps, with bonus tracks at the end of each album. i never understood why they chose to place them in strictly chronological order for the original box. -
perhaps "can't play anymore" is a bit of an exaggeration. however, i've seen bartz play in three different settings over the past year (sphere, eric reed's dolphy tribute band, and the tolliver big band), and i was sadly disappointed with his loss of chops. it happens to the best.

from Fantasy's website: "Developed by JVC, the 20-Bit K2 Super Coding System integrates three important digital audio functions: 1. The JVC 20-Bit, 128 times over-sampling high resolution analog to digital converter. 2. The JVC K2 Super Coding resolves the high resolution 20-Bit signal to the 16-Bit compact disc format while retaining the integrity of the low level information. 3. The JVC K2 Interface effectively eliminates time base jitter in the digital data stream. The end result is a compact disc of extraordinarily higher resolution than that of today's conventional compact discs. The 20-Bit K2 Super Coding System allows the listener to hear every subtle sonic nuance from the breathing of the musicians to the explosive crack of the snare drum. Enjoy!"

The practice of piercing the flesh, then pulling on or hanging by pierced body parts has been a part of Hindu culture in southern India for thousands of years, nearly as long among the Sufi of the Middle East, and for hundreds of years as a part of religious ceremonies of Native Americans. Viewed within its proper cultural context, it is arguably a valid practice. When seen outside of this social context, it indeed seems quite weird and aberrant. Okay, that's my professional opinion. Personally, I think it's icky!

fantasy has issued nine original cds by wes on cd, four of which have been reissued in k2 form. the rest of the cds in the catalog are compilations of alternate or unissued tracks that are available in the box set. unless you're hankering for these unissued tracks, i'd pass on the box.

this new series is already in the brick and mortar stores.

i just got this disc today, and me likey! i've enjoyed a number of hersch's trio recordings in the past. the addition of the two horns opens things up quite a bit. it feels like i'm getting a chance to hear more of hersch's creative vision, and what i hear is, well yeah, exciting and fresh! i strongly recommend this disc to others. heck, i think it should be considered for album-of-the-week.

CDs and LPs for sale, including MOSAIC sets
robviti replied to Dmitry's topic in Offering and Looking For...
now i'm really confused! mark, if you didn't request the mobley, my guess is that dmitry got another offer for it, since apparently he never received anything from me. -
what is interesting is that anyone would take something that aric says at face value.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... Well, a look at the new Blue Noted Regattabar schedule appears to confirm both the hopes and the fears of many of us who have enjoyed this jazz venue over the years. As I had hoped, it some acts that would regularly play NYC but skip Boston will be making the sojourn to Beantown in the future. Alas, it's going to cost more to enjoy this music (including a $3 per ticket handling charge). Not sure if the Rbar will also institute a per set drink minimum too. Here's a sample from the website Regattabar schedule 7/22-24 Clark Terry Quintet featuring Hank Jones $25 8/5-6 Ray Barretto $22.50 8/17 Bill Charlap Solo $20 9/9-11 Another Kind of Blue: The Latin Side of Miles Davis $20 9/12 Mark Turner, Larry Grenadier & Jeff Ballard $20 10/7-9 Jazz Tribute to Frank Sinatra $25 10/16-17 James Moody Quartet $25 10/27-30 Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Allstars (feat. Randy Brecker, Jackie McLean, Slide Hampton, Mulgrew Miller) $30

i'm surprised aric hasn't weighed in on this discussion yet, given the frank conversation about his idol. then again, it took him a month to discover steve lacy had passed away.

yes, it can be argued that the artistic potential of people like freddie and stanley was at a high point during the late 60s and early 70s. but to conclude that what they recorded for cti is the best they had to offer is, imo, nonsense. there were a few gems, to be sure. however, even these recordings carry the mark of producer creed taylor that makes them sound dated. in the end, i predict the majority of cti's output will be doomed to relative obscurity, and rightly so.
