  1. One momentary lapse of 4/4 away from being Don Ellis, so much of this type music seems to be, rhythmically. Or reverse engineer that, either way, it works, do the math!
  2. Oh my, I looked for Skeets March and found an R&B drummer. What are the odds?
  3. With an almost literal handful of exceptions, "rock" has never meant anything to me, but "pop"...when it's good, I love it...or have loved it. I guess now, not so much. Nothing to do with "music" either, more like finding the joy in the mundane, no matter how shallow or fleeting it is, for that moment, hey, life is not just good, it's perfect, insanely, unrealistically, totally falsely perfect. Yeah it's a lie, but sometimes you gotta lie to stay alive until you can handle the truth. You know who I liked, was, no pun intended, The Like. I liked The Like. Guess not that many people did. But yeah, go ahead an be young, lead with you glands, think with your brain, play with a freaking beat and stay away from all that mopey stuff. yeah, THAT.
  4. Sets of this immensity, I usually find used in one condition or another and pay a condition-appropriate price. Still don't have this one or an Ellington RCA Centennial box. The fate of the bottom-feeder.
  5. It's certainly a fair price, but adjusting backwards for inflation, I couldn't afford it then, either.
  6. No pictures that I can find, and barely any mention of the name. But if you find some hardcore R&B archivists, they might have a picture of him with Jimmy Preston's band: https://books.google.com/books?id=ofUDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA41&lpg=PA41&dq=%22skeets+march%22+drum&source=bl&ots=_T0Ym2a-ZX&sig=q9i6HLz-m5WbXcs3K_4QU3ko-wQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj56uqd_LrdAhXn64MKHZu_BNwQ6AEwB3oECAgQAQ#v=onepage&q=%22skeets%20march%22%20drum&f=false
  7. I long felt cold about that record (got it ca. 1972, or whenever BASF released it here), but have come to warm to it - some, and then mostly for Lee's playing. I agree that Pony is not heard to advantage on any of the record. It is not what one would hope for, although the sound of a sax section of four altos presents some arresting moments. The chaos at the end of the ballad medley is caused by each hornman taking a chorus of their own feature number all at the same time. An idea that sounds better on paper than in actuality, at least here. Mingus could do shit like that and make it work, but Mingus ain't here.
  8. When you hear the buzz about The Lemon Twigs, check them out and get why there might be a legit buzz, and then do not give absolutely even half a gottdamn about it because, among other reasons, you've read this book god knows how many times before and you know how it ends so why bother to even crack it open, or ev en go to the bookshelf it's on. Stay hungry kids!

  11. JUST got a shipping notice from Amazon, should be here tomorrow. Long-awaited!
  12. For life in general, as long as there are the various -isms in place, there will always be ways to deflect from bad behavior. That's a shame, but totally understandable. But if you want to avoid that, take care of dealing with and eradicating all the -isms, then we can cut to the chase and have it be fair and inarguable. I hate when we give people legitimate grounds for bad excuses.
  13. I got both of those Verve CDs from Red Octopus, great service. I had some initial trepidation about their payment method, which iirc, involved sending a CC # through email, but things weren't as net-ready then as they would become. Anyway, great service, and great records. RIP to both this man and to that store.
  14. Sounds like Joe to me! Not sure why/how this is "foxier" than the norm, though. Then again, I've long loved the way the guy plays, both what he plays and how he plays it. Also like the way Kenny Garrett is playing here. At some point he seems to have become one of those Geric Badasses, but there for a good while he was working that quirk.

If you have legit (i.e. non-bootleg) items for sale/trade, list them here and only here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/forum/10-offering-and-looking-for/ Stop opening up ancient threads just to hawk your wares. This is your second warning. The next one, you're out.
  21. Both feet in the air, both hands on the plate, no idea what's between the legs, none of my business really, but the uniform was waaaaay ahead of its time!
  22. Is it going to have that Christmas song? Christmas will be here before you know it!
