  2. Fining out that Amazon Video/Prime has a lot of these type of PD/screwball/B-type movies for free. This one is better than I thought it would be. Of its time, definitely, but some good performances within the expectations.
  3. Gotcha!

You mean she used her literal voice as well as her figurative one? How primitive! I love me some good talking.

I like anybody who swings. "Swinging" though...yuck. And most of these "younger" players playing "traditional styles" "swing". To me. Swing is a very personal reaction, and my "swing" is probably your swing, which is all good, just don't confuse that with right and/or wrong. Nice place to visit, always, but I can't live there now. Nobody can. But I get that everybody has dreams, and that if your dream is strong enough, it is your reality. Nothing wrong with that as long as you don't wake up for any longer than it takes to eat a meal or two a day. And oh, btw - I like very few of the younger players, period, traditional or otherwise. They almost all sound like they're trying to reinvent whatever wheel it is that rolled them in. I do like Matana Roberts, though, but...has she stopped? Re-energizing? Something?
  8. Those songs were meant to be sung and danced to. Except for a notable handful of exceptions, the changes were just there to deliver the melody and lyrics. So ,any of the schoolkids don't dance, and think that the more like a horn player a singer is the better...they're not coming from the place those songs came from, they genuinely don't "get" them. Harmonically, most of them are pretty much the same without a melody. I=vi-ii-V placed in different places/pivoting in different places, but after all these years, that's...it is what it is Which is ok. But what's not ok is not absorbing the general esthetic.and playing with a concept of melody of some kind, any kind. They can do advanced calculus on the vertical, , but can't do basic addition/subtraction on melody (and I don't mean melody as in "songs". I ,mean basic concepts of arc, cadence (harmonic and rhythmic), sound/silence, things that have nothing to do with "style" abd everything to do with music, period. And don't get me started on most of these "type" are insulted by the notion of dance being the essential ingredient of swing. Cecil Taylor swings because he's a dancer.

  11. Those SLAs are pretty,...ambitious. In your experience, do they meet them 100% of the time? Also, what kind of security exploitations are we talking about? What is the worst possible outcome, and what is the most likely outcome? Or are they one and the same? Sorry to hear that you have been floating monthly expenses. Never hesitate to call that out, please! Now, at the risk of sounding two-faced about this whole thing, I've been a regular annual contributor, but my wife has retired and our family income is not what it once was. Plus there's a grandchild now that is de facto first recipient of whatever "extra" money we have at any given moment. I'm not talking "spoiling" money, the parents are working hard, but sometimes...you know how it can be, I'm sure. But I am a "regular poster" no doubt, and want to continue contributing. If we can do it successfully and collectively, let's do it.
  12. Cold spell + long weekend + Roku + Amazon Prime Video = streaming stuff out the ass, and in a good way!
  13. Is slinking mandated to be a solo act, or can it have company? Glad to hear the backstory and personal triumph, but as far as the trumpet playing....

I don't know if I like this or not, which sometimes is part of the fun.

Seriously? I don't like anything that doesn't swing. But a lot of music doesn't swing that "swings".
  16. Had a look at Chicago Overcoat this AM. Wow, great role, great movie, coulda been not so great, but Frank Vincent rose the whole thing, rose the bandstand.
  17. Those are indeed five clarinetists!

I just don't care, about him, what happens to "swinging jazz", any of that. More and more, that's feeling like caring about the Brooklyn Dodgers. I mean, great lifecycle, essential folklore/history, but in real time, over and getting over-er.
  19. I've been thinking about the effects of overpopulation on human behavior for a while now, but within the last year, I stumbled on some random interview with a female composer whose name I do not recall right now (sorry...) and she was getting really elaborate about how the whole paradigm of all "Western Music" was built around a sexual model, always, eventually, building to an inevitable and final climax, with lots of twisting and thrusting along the way. She said that that's a quintessentially "male" way of looking at life, and that she rejected it wholeheartedly, except/unless she herself wanted that. Otherwise, she was going to work of different paradigms. Now yes, some of this struck me as being more than a little rigid and dogmatic, but another part of me said, well, she's not wrong, not in any way, so...you know physically and mental, there is less "space" now than ever, and maybe reproduction is not as...common a drive as it used to be, maybe people are feeling the need to take care of/nurture what we already have instead of just making more and more and more of. Either that or destroy as much of it as possible. One thing's for sure, now is definitely a lot of things that it was not even 15-20 years ago. Where it all goes, hell if I no, but along the way, pay attention to the changes and if enough of the more or less "same thing" is happening, it's not accidental.
  20. Same.
  21. Also, in a time of exponentially growing over-population, allow me to posit that the phallocentric esthetic in all parts of life might naturally be diminishing as a primary directive force of civilization. The Age Of Dick is over, don't fret, it's ok, thrusting and sperming and impregnating will always have a place, but they need not rule forever. There's other thing to do, let people who aren't drive to Dick Dominate step up for a change. Dick being Dick, though, Dick gonna make it ugly as possible along the way, so...watch out for Dick.
