I don't get what's being said as far as proactively defending a critic who has not been disparaged, and they dynamic of Dolphy jamming with Dizzy's working band is nothing like the dynamic of Dolphy being a collaborative member of Trane's working band, but ok, sure. I don't think I know what the point is, but having been accused of being incomprehensible myself on more than one occasion, I'll let it ride.

not really, but...ok?

What is your least favorite album by a favorite musician?
JSngry replied to duaneiac's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Solo album is fine by me, it's essentially Sonny practicing, and I get a lot from that. I get that mileages can vary on that, though, totally get that. But you say there's more? -

There's a lot of style-choices for suspenders, but I leanred the har way that good ones don't come cheap. I need the ones with bigass grips, those little skinny ones are only for people who don't need the help. These badboys, though - don't buy these if you really don't need the help, they are massive. I mean, I need the help, but THIS much help, still not sure about that. I'm skinny everywhere except my gut and my face and thse things make me feel shrunken/shrinking. -
Did i miss something, did somebody here denigrate Werner? I do have the Dolphy/Lewis records, though (two LPs, one LP with just one cut, the other the whole album). It's ok, but clearly Dolphy was in another place than was the band, like those very first Ayler records. Fascinating history.

Concord enters the 5 LPs box market
JSngry replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Better than the Japanese model, imo, because they always came with "contemporary" liner notes that were generally quite good reads. And new covers too, not at all "historically accurate" relevant to material, but still...if you know it's old music going in, why not? And if you don't, hey, that worked, didn't it! . -
What is your least favorite album by a favorite musician?

Ok, the "worst" Sonny Rollins album is The Way I Feel, but that's ok, it's just a failed attempt at a bad idea. Shit happens, hey, that's business. But my least favorite Sonny Rollins album is Horn Culture. That was a great band, they were ready to deliver (side one of The Cutting Edge grooves like fuck!) and Next Album had really primed my pump for the next Sonny Rollins next album, but for whatever reason, Sonny was not there like he could have been. There has never been a "real" Sonny Rollins album tht I still feel as badly about as this one, not even Reel Life, which is just mediocre - but consistent within itself. Horn Culture, otoh, sounds like a record that should have never been released, at least not those takes. The myth of the "succession of uninspired Mainstream albums" is not without some non-scrutinized simplistic populist justification, but there was always at least one cut (sometimes a lot more than one) where shit at least sorta happened, and sometime really did happen (there's more of those than the myth realizes). But on Horn Culture, it doesn't seem uninspired or held back or anything like that, it just sounds...wrong. And it's not the band's fault, not at all. -
Indeed, I started to insist that we stay, but really, Brenda was moved in a way that I've never seen her be moved, and ultiamtely, I had to respect that. Lintu is indeed gifted based on this extremely limited sample size. He got the band to play lighter and more transparently than I've ever heard them, and they seemed to do so willingly and gladly. Early reviews were going on about how "demonstrative" (or something like that) a conductor he was, but he got what he wanted and it was good, etc. All I can figure is that between Thursday night and Saturday night, nobody needed any further prompting, because compared to van Zweden, this guy was Charlie Watts. No complaints either way, just to be clear. I love it that this band can do all of that, not all bands can.

That's kind of what drives the Japanese reissue market (as I understand it). Limited quantities at relevant intervals, relevant markets served. -
Playboy Swings by Patty Farmer
JSngry replied to sgcim's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
That's not exactly a " knee jerk sexism put-down", not by any stretch of even my imagination. Statement of fact (or am I mistaken that the Playboy "image" was indeed based in part - a good-sized part (no pun intended!) on naked chick everywhere and sex at will and that for the longest, they did not show pubic hair, and for the even longer, exposed vaginas?) followed by a perfectly logical question, not about sexism, but about jazz. I mean, i think the whole "Playboy Lifestyle" is stupid now, but not for reasons of "sexism". It's not sexist, it's stunted, Sexism is anything but stunted, it's quite evolved. There's nothing at all evolved about naked chicks without vaginas being presented as "sex" or "lifestyle". And especially not as "jazz". As a reflection of a particular people at a particular place in time, it analyzes, but think about this - by equating "jazz" and "sexual freedom", how many myths were being not only perpetrated but further ensconced. Oooh, Al Belletto had a long gig at the N.O. Playboy Club. Jelly Roll Morton had a long time playing N.O. Whorehouses. Does the story end at that? No, but you'd not know it from looking at all those fine asses on all them bunnies (yes, I visited a club or two). The asses were indeed fine, but that's what you paid for, right? OTOH, sure, Hefner was an employer of note, and that cannot be overlooked. So were, a.o., Owney Madden, Morris Levy, Bill Cosby (the PERFECT Hefner partner in crime,as it turns out, literally!), the list goes on. You link one commodity with another and sell a package of illusions. When one commodity loses favor, no problem, there's another one waiting, all too willing. The supply of commodities and consumers is endless. And yes, Playboy made an attempt to "expose" (ha ha) "real jazz" to mass audiences, but jeezus, look at those poll results. They could have tried harder if the cared that much, ok? Sure we have Miles Davis interviews, and thanks for those, but where was the Max Roach interview. Or the Duke Ellington interview? Or the Sonny Rollins interview? Or the goddammed Archie Shepp interview? AFAIK, there's not even a Dave Brubeck interview or a Paul Desmond interview or a Stan Getz interview. Brubeck in particular was a very articulate speaker on a wide range of totally relevant social issues, why no give ink to his voice instead of just pimping some "cool" fantasy (uh-oh, again no pun intended!) shit. Hugh Hefner today is a fucking joke, and the punch line was already silently in place from the beginning, it just took a long time to finally deliver it. Of course, hinsight is 20-20, always. But live an learn, hopefully. Got anything else? -

My name is Jem, and I have no shame about wearing them, either above or below the shirt. I now walk unimpeded by anything other than my natural clumsiness! -

Sorry, nothing towards you. I just find it hard to give either Apple or Amazon the benefit of the doubt about anything. -
Or alternatively, the blues had a baby that eventually committed patricide?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! ?

That's proven to be my favorite EH Columbia. No idea why it's stayed so hidden, relatively speaking.

Numbers are objective. Interpretation of numbers...not so much, not always. -
No idea, but I hope somebody checks out those sides in my last post. Decidedly "Third-Stream"-ish in a way that comes from the time before the term had been coined and the style codified for consumer consumption.

JSngry replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, surely yes, such as there are any left that would be so inclined. Don't ask me how they get there, I don't know. Apple thanks you for your child-like benevolence, it is truly the way to a better world for all. And Amazon thanks you for your money, as it too is a way to a better world for all. -
Anybody interested in deign in general might want to have a look at the Netflix series Abstract: https://www.netflix.com/title/80057883 There's an episode dedicated to Es Devlin, with whose work I was totally unfamiliar, but was much impressed. https://esdevlin.com/ It's not the type of thing that I would go to, personally, but I do get it and its attraction for certain types of performance/performers. I also don't think that it is necessary for every type of performer to go there, One size does not fit all, because there is no such thing as one size. Fill the size you got, that's all. If you need more space, make more space. If you need less, use less. It will work if it's right, and if it's not right, nothing will change that.

Woody Herman Philips Select

I definitely prefer Herman-era Nistico. But it's not like I dis-prefer the post-Herman work. But Sal was definitely tired at some point, not a happy ending to that story. -
Woody Herman Philips Select
JSngry replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Oh, Sal Nestico could play. That whole band had in a zone of its own. Most of the Select finds them firmly ensconced therein. It's just good old-fashioned road-band-ish get off the bus make a joyful noise here and then get back on the bus music. Nothing necessarily "deep", but wide as fuck, and sometime deep enough. You done good. -
