2017 MLB Facts, Lies, Propaganda, Opinions, & Pictures
JSngry replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Full page ad in today's Dallas Morning News: I've not pulled for the Dodgers since the Walter Alston days, nor do I have any intent reversing course. But if Yu helps get them to the World Series, I'll suspend that. Just once! Darvish has been a delight his whole time here. Too bad this is how it ended. -
Just tried on the 3X and my worst fears were realized....it fits perfectly! Also, new car smell and unwashed new t-shirt softness, are there two deeper yet more transient sensory pleasures to be had in this life? Other than the first line of the night, or any other such pleasure best left avoided?

Confirmation on Teddy Wilson and Mosaic update
JSngry replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Fred is the guy who responded to my email about the Goodman set in about less than 12 hours with a single sentence (two at most) that told me everything I needed to know. Clarity as needed, when needed. Scott's all, well no, but yes, now but not now, I mean, geez dude, make a commitment to a reality. "Crash and burn" does not generally connote a gradual phasing out, but then again, this is the same guy who cried FIRE! and then seems to have not been ready for all the fire trucks that showed up. I enjoy his work, but his external communications have seem, uh....imprecise? Unfocused? Like he's really doesn't know but wants to seem to? When it comes to business communication relating to specifics, make my style Ron Swanson, definitely. So, yeah, Fred. -

Scott says: I’m not going to say we are winding down right now. But unless some incredible miracle happens where jazz becomes the new hip-hop and people start buying CDs and LPs more than they are downloading, then yes, we will crash and burn... But with that said we soldier on and hope we can make things go for a few more years. So...no, not winding down, but fully expecting to crash and burn barring some incredible miracle, but crashing and burning will hopefully take a few more years, so, not going to say we're winding down, will say we expect to crash and burn, but not right now, over the next few years, but that's not winding down.....sayWHAAAAAA? Can I get that translated into Fred, please? -
Fred seems like solid folk. Then again, I try in vain to recall encountering any Fred who wasn't.

Crystal Gayle is a real talent indeed. This will be the Midnight Special to look for: Ronettes reimagined as Marvelettes, and who is that bass player and drummer, OMG! Anybody remember Bud Brisbois on TMS (som e really lame popsong vocal!!!!!)? Of Glen Campbell and George Benson jamming on guitar together (hold on now, not so fast....Glen Campbell could play!) I remember the earlier shows being a lot more live than the later ones, much like life itself.

Hey Kids, Have You Heard The News? MOSAIC's IN TROUBLE!!!
JSngry replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'll be disappointed if the fold, but I won't be surprised. To be honest, though, as attractive as the potential Teddy Wilson set is, I'm not sure if I'll be in a place to pounce on its price point, a little too much justification to relevant/impacted parties needed. A well-done Bill Barron set, though...I could justify that one to anybody, including god. -
Dave Liebman related the story of him complaining to Miles that he couldn't find anything interesting to do with some standard, like Stella or some such. Miles' advice was simple - "don't blame the tune, it's not the tune's fault". Not expecting a problem. It's not my chest that's expanded, but if a 3X is too tight, that's not the shirt's fault, right?

Lee May (not aka Arthur Lee Maye) RIP

Why delete when we can expand? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leigh_Martin_May and Surely there are more! -
So there were two records by a group of that name, eh? I only knew the first one: https://www.discogs.com/The-Night-Blooming-Jazzmen-The-Night-Blooming-Jazzmen/master/733289

That's the problem with jazz today, too many nerds, not enough Pee Wee Marquettes, an unhealthy balance, to be sure.

I think some folks try to listen to those Maynard Ferguson Roulette/etc records and miss the great writing that is so often there because they can't get past Maynard. Well, here's a chance to hear a lot of that same type of writing without Maynard. AND with Yusef, By George, Max (sometimes) primo Richard Williams, just a gaggle of giggers + 2 bonus cuts not on the original LP. Don't know if this one has been raptured yet, but if not, carpe diem now, thank yourself later.

ALL MY LIFE !!!!! People can debate the "truth" of that from now until whenever, but this was a truth for Abbey Lincoln, and if it was going to be otherwise, it would have been. It wasn't.

Best thing I've read about the painfully unfulfilled promise of the Rangers' stint with Yu Davish (sic): Scouts Take on The Darvish Deal https://www.lonestarball.com/2017/8/1/16072780/scouts-take-on-the-darvish-deal -
Lee Morgan Film
JSngry replied to danasgoodstuff's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
fwiw, I've heard "reliable sources" relate stories about how Lee & Bobby Timmons used to do entry-level breakings and enterings to jack whatever was laying around and easily boosted, I mean common shit. Like, he was lucky he didn't get busted on that, never mind the drugs. Let's also recall the anecdote about how Lee got motivated to clean up after hearing one od his records played on the radio as being by "the late Leee Morgan". What does UK Netflix get anyway? A lot of the stuff that we (I mean the Sangrey family) get through Amazon via Acorn? -
I too recall hearing it a few times many years ago. I also recall not being knocked out at all by it. In fact, my memory of it, such as it is, that is was kinda slackerly in a distinctively Bob Shad Meets Leonard Feather-y kind of way. Even if that's what it really is, that's not to say that it wouldn't be good for a listen or two today?
