  1. I mean, the nature of the music business is always that you get fucked somehow, if you know what I mean, but it also seems that if you come to the game correct and with the ability to discuss business AS business, you can be on equal enough footing for it to be a fair fucking, if you also know what I mean. Seems to me that Yusef, a BIG motherfucker who carried himself with pride, dignity, sobriety, and knowledge, most likely knew how to talk to the business people on their terms without backing down or being snowed or trying to game them. Here's what we'll do for you, and here's what we'll do it for. You will not fuck us at this point, nor will we fuck you. You'd be surprised how much can get done when it's a fair fucking.
  2. The more intelligible the chatter, the more in I am.
  3. More music than ever, fewer laces to put it than ever, no wonder why everybody makes records and none but a few have gigs....perhaps the other way around would be fun?
  4. Maybe it's as simple as that Yusef was sane, sober, sensible, and handled his business accordingly, got the dates without the traps. Did Yusef also have/keep his publishing during those years?
  5. If the Wax Poetics article of a few years ago remains accurate, she's living very modestly now, and not really by choice.
  6. If so, please drop some knowledge here, please.
  7. In my experience, it works better to smell the coffee and then wake up, but even so, is there another link to what you've pointing to? That one is not working for me and its 6:30 PM, coffee at this hour not advisable for me.
  8. The works by Schuller, Mamlok, and Wilson are very engaging to my ears, the piece by Powell seems very diffuse, maybe needs more listens, maybe just not his best work, and the concluding thing by Robert Helps could not hold be through to conclusion. Cover art by Mel Powell! "Little Miro", it's called. But there is nothing on here, nothing, that sounds as if the players and the music would not benefit from a nice tour, get on the work and work this stuff every night, and then record it. What's here is fine, but what could be here is probably finer yet.

  10. All I know is that when I see commercials featuring bright eyed people with perfect posture executing their life dreams in a perfectly effortless fashion through some commercial mechanism and not once having to stop to so much as scratch a scrotum or adjust a purse strap or anything other than keep going keep going nothing's ever going to stop you you're not just a winner, you're THE winner, it is inevitably accompanied by either some grossly simplified Minimalistic twaddle or else isolated bits and pieces of same, you know, the glorified triadic nonsense that is played super cleanly and crisply, usually by a clarinet for some reason, like this is SO special, and it's all for you, and you know, fuck that, I can obsess over brief triadic spurts for you all day long, that does not make me special, nor you, although if the narcissism implied by looking toward life as deserved entitlement of frictionfree fulfillment makes you a dangerously deluded self-hypnotized god-on-the-go then hey, so be it. Swallow those triads whole, then, bon-api-fucking-tit. Apple is the worst of the lot, Bank of America runner up, so much TV, it's just everywhere. Minimalism itself I can take or leave, a little goes a long way for me, although the concept/philoshophy/etc was/is useful for palate (intellectual and executional) expanding. But the uses to which it is being put in the marketplace are basically just vile. The line between meditative trance and hypnotic brainwashing is a very fine one, and might have as much to do with input as anything else. Perhaps input is the only distinction, perhaps a self-induced meditative state exits as the mechanism of self-brainwashing. . So you tell me - do you trust Apple or Bank of America or Downton Abbey or ANY of this stuff to put you into ANY kind of relaxed trance? I sure as hell don't.
  11. Blue Note thought yet again an entirely different way about the Moody sessions before they were affiliated with Capitol
  12. Capitol put of the 8 DG tracks on the strictly bebop LP of the early 70s, but COF's piece was not one of them i guess "You Stole My Wife, You Horsethief" rated higher?
  13. I spent a whole day negotiating for the release of my fellow band members from the Salina jail as the result of a groggy early AM each van thought that the other had paid for the gas thing. Police and citizens alike were racist pig assholes (but they did have their price, eventually), so forgive me if I say Fuck Salinas and funk their vinyls too.

  15. I do hope that Mr. Cuscuna has a developing relationship with the Max Roach estate. Any indication that he did the Tony Scott thing and did the sessions on his own dime?
  16. I caught him at a university lecture in 1974, equal parts topical comedy, dramatic screeds against internal Fascists and their long range plans and the machinations to look for as they pursued them, and nice rambling dietary lessons on how to become a breatharian. I was 18, and it was epic. I'm 60 now, and better understand the balancing act between deadpan lunatic and totally right on social critic that Gregory performs, and still, it is epic.
  17. Well, You were talking about Ikea and Downton Abbey and all that, not about the music Itself.Certain musics often and easily are put to popular uses for which their creators had litlle or no Intent.
  18. That's what Minimalism is often used for. The repetition and lack of silence lets people block everything else out save their own drive to have everything their way. Of course, that's only when it's consonant-ish, but the things that penetrate past the peripheral always are, don't you think?
  19. Jump with and for joy, squealing like the happy boy pig I am whenever the opportunity arises!
  20. A Yusef Savoy set would be awesome, as would a Bill Barron Savoy + set, as would a set of the Bill Dixon-produced Savoy material, there's still room for surprises and delights, but is there the business opportunities to realize them?
  21. It's a non-intrusive lifestyle affirmer, if you are looking for something that eggsyou to keep going, don't stop, you're a winner, what could possibly go wrong, well, it can do that for you.
  22. Lots to look for, thank you and Larry both, much appreciated. Listening to this right now, and jeesus, it's screaming out to be played and heard live, for the music to be coming directly from inside the performance area, not from disembodied waveforms emanating from stereo hi-fi record player speakers. There is MOTION in this music as well as emotion, let me see this music as well as hear it, please!
  23. Thank you, that's the third of three that I knew. What's up next, gotta be more than three great donkey songs.
  24. Ok, have only listenend to the Birdland Variation, and honestly find it kind of creepy, sort of a "here's how the hit would have sounded if I had stayed in the band and we never changed" thing, which is such a....Wynton-ish thing to do...creepy. I mean, what is the point of this, to wait until Zawinul has been dead for this long to finally push back? It's taken this long? See, that might be why he got moved out in the first place , Joe & Wayne were ready to GO and this guy was all can't we just be moody all the time? "Birdland" would not have happened if WR continued making endless sequels to I Sing The Body Electric...they'd have ended up on ECM making records like this. Something oddly Pete Best-ish about this, maybe. Or Brian Wilson finally finished SMILE away from The Beach Boys, Miroslav Vitous finally gets to lead Weather Report and turn it into an ECM band. I'll listen to the rest of the record, but, you know, Miroslav after Weather Report, follow that career, read the interviews over the decades, that was not a clean break for him, nor was it quickly or easily processed. To hear him tell it himself, Steve Kuhn had a similar type thing about being dropped by Trane, but he got over it, right? And now he's on ECM too!
