There are no wrong answers, this is not an examination, there are only personal choices, although Steve, you don't get twenty minutes, Death said ten, Death means ten. A lot of us might in fact be living on borrowed time, but in this scenario, time's up, debt due, Doug E. Fresh got six minutes, we get ten, count your blessings.

That's the best explanation there is.

yeah, the four bar bridge on "Toy Tune" is insidiously subliminally subversive. Not that the rest of the tune isn't, but that bridge is like did that just happen, I know that just happened, but...did that really just happen?

I'd have to go full-bore retrospective and put this on (LP version, the folks' Glenn Miller Story soundtrack LP on decca) because it's the only thing I can think of that I've heard for literally as long as I can remember, had the record for even before I could remember, and about the only thing that meets those criteria that I can still run into with full embraces, always have always will. Besides, by the time that thing's over and I've done danced it out, hey, fuck it, we're good for anything now, let's go. Born/Adopted into a Glenn Miller world, surreptitiously & permanently abducted by that funny little man in the white coat, onward through the fog into the light, often looking back but never moving back, always home/never home, what becomes of the broken-headed? How 'bout Billy Kyle and that 9th chord at the very end, how's that for ending by taking the next step up?

Since I can't afford the Maynard Ferguson Mosaic......
JSngry replied to parroja's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Really surprised that more of those albums weren't released as single CDs. Maynard is like buddy Rich, there's a fan base that extends beyond "typical jazz buffs". The prices of the Mosaic set show that much. Missed opportunity perhaps.- 8 replies

Never mind the desert island, which may or may not happen to you in your lifetime. This is something that will happen to you in your lifetime, it will end. But here's the hypothetical - let's say you get a courtesy call from Death, hey babe, it's time, ten minutes. No exceptions, dig? So of course you go through all the stages and goodbyes, but, you know, music matters, so you got to hear one thing before you leave this phase and take it to the next (whatever that is or isn't). So what's it gonna be, what will death come into the room to? Spiritual as well as Secular selections allowed, because, again, not a desert island. Death, final curtain, point of no return. Ten minutes, baby, ten minutes. A guaranteed eventuality with a 100% predictable outcome. Make it real, because it will be. Inspired by for some reason remembering Albert Lion playing Am I Blue to his wife while she slowly checked out. That is one of the most profound non-performing musical acts I've ever heard about.

Since I can't afford the Maynard Ferguson Mosaic......
JSngry replied to parroja's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Not Roulette, but immediately after, are the Cameo sessions, which are collected here http://www.amazon.com/Sounds-Maynard-Ferguson-Come-Complete-Recordings/dp/B006GVNILK Might be a little pricey these days, the large Maynard fanbase allows for that, but if you don't already have it and like the later Roulette sessions a lot, you'll most likely enjoy these every bit as much.- 8 replies

For people who already running on the large size, is there shrinkage involved with the first washing, and if so, how much? If I want to end up with a 2XL, should i order a 3XL?

Ok, I'd be interested in hearing what the appeal is for you, you know, compare notes. To me, the issue preventing my fuller enjoyment is what I hear as a tentativeness/lack of a real center like there is on Odyssey, which I hear as highly focused, almost laser-like so. Moto almost strikes me as a rehearsal or a loose jam. Maybe that's what you like, the openness? Different strokes, and all that. . OTOH, I took off "Montezuma" and played it on gigs for about a year. Seriously, I'd like to know what grabs you about this one, because I've been coming back to it for 30+ years thinking there's something there that I've missed. If you can lead me closer to finding it, I'd appreciate it. Again, seriously. Lon, you too. I know you guys don't react to music casually or carelessly.

I didn't know until; fairly recently that the song was originally intended for The Spinners. I mean, that would have been good, but probably just a really good cryin' song. Jimmy Ruffin put that....thing in it that made it more about the broken dreams than just the broken heart. A broken heart can heal, but a broken spirit lingers forever, no getting it back whole, hello humpty-Dumpty of the soul, and that's where Jimmy Ruffin took it.

I heard this on a podcast today, and...I dunno. Very impressive vision, but the content seems kinda noodle-y to me, like safe, like it would sound like that no matter what, where, or how. The only real dynamics come from addition or subtraction of texture, not from inside a line itself. Blame it on the technology, maybe. Nevertheless, seems like a fertile enough mind. Might be into checking out something else that's less bound to the technology, see what happens there.

Which Wayne soprano sound are we talking about? The one he had when he was just starting to deal with the instrument, the one that he had when started feeling really comfortable with it, or the later one where he could/can make it make any sound it needed to make any time he wanted to? Same thing with Sonny Rollins' post=comeback sound, people say they don't like it, I have to ask, again, which one? Because there are several, neither him nor Wayne are people who just got "a sound" and stayed there no matter what. They kept working with it and over time it would become something else altogether. Some of it age, some of is clarity, some of it is a greater command, all of that.

If You Were on the BBC Desert Island Discs Program
JSngry replied to paul secor's topic in Miscellaneous Music
That sounds like I might end up staying on the island longer than I had to, just to get my money out of the phone. Which I guess leads to the question, how much did I pay for this phone, did I get it new, and has it been jailbroke yet? Because those are all factors. Maybe the question now is this - if you were going to be stranded on a desert island, what eight portable devices would you take? Make mine youTube! -
If You Were on the BBC Desert Island Discs Program
JSngry replied to paul secor's topic in Miscellaneous Music
So is Tom Hanks still on this island, or is he off it now? Because if he's off, then hey, we'll just do that. And if he's still on, then maybe I look for another island, you know, keep on swimming, like Shine. Besides, ipod, why would I go to a desert island with discontinued technology? This island, maybe, especially if no haircuts are available. -
Thanks for the tip.

If You Were on the BBC Desert Island Discs Program
JSngry replied to paul secor's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Again I ask - is there gonna be wi-fi on this island? Because if so, I'll just use the cloud and have it all. -
Am I gettin' wi-fi on this island?

Of those three BNs, Moto Grosso Feio will always be comfortably third. Between the other two, depends on what kind of place you want to go to when you press the play button. I generally prefer Iska, but that's an evolutionary progression. Can't go wrong with Etc., though, it's a lot more of a "jazz" records. I'd not rest until I got a copy of the original LT LP, though, just for the cover. I got Native Dancer in the Complete Columbia Albums box, and it's fine there. If you have even half an interest in the others contained in that set, that's the way to go to get that one, I think.
