  2. My ears tell me that the same voicings remarked on here were carried over from the Jaws version to the BATAT arrangement, just adjusted to fit the instrumentation.
  3. I envy people of my approximate age whose first and often only heartfelt idol was Trane. They almost all discovered him after the passage of time had removed him from the planet, so they only knew him as deceased. That's how it was with me and guys like Hawk, Prez, Bird, a few others, but a lot of my "real heroes" have been guys who were very much alive when I got to them, and none has been a more real hero to me than Sonny. So many of them have passed in my lifetime, and/but I'm really not ready to live in a world without Sonny Rollins, for more than a few reasons, only some of which are probably rational. Not yet, probably not ever, but... So yeah, get well. Stay well. Keep playing the tenor. Do it however and with whomever you choose. I don't care. Just...keep it going until it's for sure time to go. Please.
  4. I never know how to answer to stuff like this, because I've been listening, actively listening, to music for literally as long as I can remember. Most of my earliest memories have records playing along. so,,,I don't know. Children's Record Guild? Little Golden Records? Ames Brothers? Frankie Carle? Big Joe Turner's "Flip Flop & Fly" 45? Bing Crosby? Glenn Miller? Louis Armstrong? 60 Years Of Music America Loves Best? American Bandstand? Jim Reeves' "Billy Bayou"? 78s being played at 33 1/3 & 45 because I didn't know any better and then me breaking them in half because they didn't work right? That was then, but geez, it's not like that was my foundation and everything has flowed from that...when something comes along that feels right, hey, I go with it and see where it goes. Never does it lead back to where I was before, like, well, that was fun but it never really happened.

  18. Burrell lost my interest once he got into that Helen Keane world. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not. Don't know, don't care. But before then, he was musical comfort food for me. Never really fancy or surprising, just satisfying music that, like the man that ran over the dog, hit the Spot.

I think it's like county-fair midway. Tristano is quantum. They don't do quantum at county fairs, but they do do cotton candy, turkey legs, fun houses, and tilt-a-whirls, all of which are fun for a quick minute while you're actually doing them, but all of which will turn you sick if you don't get out after you're done.

There is the sports beauty too, although this is not that beautiful. This is like county-fair beautiful, where you're supposed to like it barbecue WOOOO!!!! and then go home and wake up the next morning to do the chores, because that's what life is REALLY all about, all the while remembering that WOOOO!!!! that you got to see at the fair, last night/last week, last month, last year, that one time. Unless of course your gig is plying the county fair circuit, in which case you gotta look for that WOOO!!!!, keep it lively, and keep it ever WOOOO!!!ier as the years pass, because people got tv now.

Math is a beautiful thing. But you gotta remember that it's math-beautiful, not woman-beautiful, or even perfect-high beautiful. Not everybody remembers, not all the time. Not that they always should. But...
  24. Now this I'll vouch for/second the emotion/whatever. I took that chart apart, part by part, back in the day as an arranging assignment, and getting it right - absolutely right - was a helluva lot harder than I thought it was going to be. Lots of "counter-intuitive" note choices on the inside, especially in the bari part... And what is the bari part doing on the inside, you may or may not ask? Well, yeah. Exactly. Or maybe I'm forgetting, hell it was 35 years ago. But short of digging through my closet, that'll be my story, thanks.
  25. This is the 21st century and people get their news from Twitter. However intricately you want to manipulate a quote, it ain't gonna be too damn hard. If you know what I mean.
