  1. I'm probably not a typical customer, but in the interest of "market research". let me throw in that I would/will buy the Daley set before either the Fischer or the Steig, maybe even before the Carter/Bradford, all of which I already have on other media.
  2. An old humanoid at that.
  3. "Ponce De Leon" to me = "Fountain Of Youth" or Florida, so either Clark Terry or Ira Sullivan is all that readily comes to mind. Already been told that it's not Clark Terry, and would be shocked if it was Ira Sullivan.
  4. I was really taken by her trust in silence while singing, not just between phrases, but within them. But again, same thing on both songs, more or less. Oh well, they can't be that old, let's see what decisions they make going forth.Sounds like they've at least realized that there are choices to be made. No small feat in itself, that one.
  5. Sorry to hear about this. So, what's the deal with Chattanooga now? When/where/how/etc.?
  6. Saw them on SNL tonight, never heard them or of them before. What I'm wondering is if the singer, Brittany Howard, is a really, REALLY eccentric/fascinating/whatever one-trick-pony, or is there gonna be more there. Because the two songs they played sounded like more or less the same song, but I got hooked in both times because of Howard's voice. But again, same thing both songs. But again again, if there's a higher ceiling there in terms of....everything, then, whoa. Time will tell?
  7. Great pick. I forget how long it is, but he really makes a beautiful transition from inside to outside playing on that. I remember playing that track for a few people at random back in the day, just somebody would be hanging out, not "jazz people" or anything, just folks, and not everybody would dig it. But some of the ones that did would get up and start hollering and screaming the deeper into it that Trane & Elvin got, I mean, involuntary reactions and shit, like in church or something. My first reaction was not quite so outwardly demonstrative, but yeah, I was gripped, to put it mildly. Still am. Ultimately, that's the kind of music I like best, the kind where "liking" it or not is not an option you have. It just takes you over. BAM. Figure it out later, if ever. Hell yeah.
  8. Monk set arrived today, safe and sound (no pun intended, etc.). Thanks!
  9. Hints in general would be welcome, yeah.
  10. And thanks for your response as well. Keep me in mind if the time comes, and either way, good luck on the moving!
  11. How much would you pay for this set? With packaging intact but not "mint"-y (i.e. - no torn corners, cracked cases, torn booklet pages, etc., but normal wear is ok), around $350.00. But they routinely go in excess of $500.00 (at least), and I have no interest at that price. Those are "collector's prices", and I'm not a collector. Just an obtainer. It's not an urgent need by any means, and once I get it I'll be keeping it (seems like I'm a perpetual buyer, never a seller) just something I'd "like" to have for personal reasons. I dug that band a lot as a kid, then "grew out of it", and now don't mind going back for grins.
  12. Well, that one I like, but only when delivered with a knowing adult twinkle and not some babyass wide-eyed wonderment.
  13. 3,2,1,0 from Black Brown & Beautiful (Flying Dutchman). Solos by Roger Kellaway & Bobby Bryant. The compose'rs liner notes dryly note the great progress that has come from the expenditures on the space program while earthly situations continue to...not progress so much.
  14. Count me as a fan.
  15. The Weather Girls The Weather Underground Al Roker (is he by any chance relationed to Mickey Roker?)
  16. Tell me this is just an urban legend. I don't want to have to blame a man for whom I otherwise have the highest respect for this wore-out piece of emo blather.

  19. I think I'd prefer Lacy's Monk to Monk's Nelson, but that's strictly an idle speculation based entirely on the hypothetical conjecture.
  20. Australia? http://www.lonestarball.com/2013/2/15/3992410/todd-mcdonald-australian-outfielder-475000-dollar-bonus-texas-rangers Who knew?
  21. Yeah, that's fair enough. I just haven't...healed enough to accept it that well.HA! But let's imagine the difference if we dropped in what was Nelson's LA pianist of choice that time, Roger Kellaway... When in LA, do as the LAians do...
  22. Just looked at the Kelley bio and the lead time was a few weeks, enough for a "standard" assignment, probably not so much for a really deep look into Monk's music. Also sounds like Teo was the main mover/shaker behind this date, and that Monk was just going along for the ride. Thus the inclusion of three Macero originals on the date. Ultimately, it sounds as if Macero was looking for the "Oliver Nelson sound" as a potential commercial boost to Monk's sales (this at a time when columbia was getting all antsy about crossing Monk over) . Also sounds like budget was a concern (a third day of recording was canceled for that exact reason), so I have no doubt that Macero & Nelson, both business-savvy musicians well aware of what would and would not be expeditious to place in front of a big band to get a full album of music of a certain executional quality (you go all Hall Overton under these circumstances, and you need more than a few days and great sight-readers to make it sound right, never mind making it actually BE right...), looked at this at least as much from a business standpoint as a purely musical one. And that's what it sounds like, worlds colliding but never making contact, everybody getting paid and moving on. If it wasn't Monk it really wouldn't that big of a deal, and even since it is, it's not the only time this has happened like this for exactly the same reasons. I still can't listen to the record, though.
