Want to "license" Stan Getz At Large? You can! http://www.greenlightmusic.com/music-licensing/album/1361767/stan-getz-at-large/ But be aware: so the only licensing that appears to be of concern is publishing, which is proper, of course, but...who owns the masters? Yeah, I get PD and all that, but still...this session has been a little "obscure" for all these years and now (relatively) all of a sudden it's in Big Lots for 5 bucks, and per Amazon on an upcoming (February 2013) release with Bill Perkins on the cover (traceable back to this label: http://www.play24-7.co.uk/ ) so...what's going on?

Also on the back of the CD was a logo for something called MCPS, which turns out to be a licensing service: http://www.prsformusic.com/users/recordedmedia/cdsandvinyl/Pages/AP1AP2.aspx I found this wording to be of interest: So,,,who actually owns the masters to the At Large sessions? My LP labels say "Recorded under the personal supervision of Norman Granz", but...really? I always wondered why this session never saw a proper US/Verve CD issue. Maybe because it wasn't their's to release by then, like mjzee gets at. And maybe the stuff is now in Aubrey Mayhew Land, gonna be licensed and released anywhere anytime by anybody who's got the price, which is starting to look like it might be pretty affordable? Oh, but wait - the MCPS thing also offers pressing services with this nifty little waiver available! http://www.prsformusic.com/users/recordedmedia/pressingplants/Pages/pressingplants.aspx YEAH!

Ok, this is interesting...the set itself is manufactured in the EU, and "licensed by Music Moods 1471 Rozelle Street, Memphis, TN 38106" That address belongs to Express contract Packaging, Inc. http://www.expresscp.com/ A little bit about them: A little more about them: http://www.expresscp.com/distribution.htm A little MORE about them: http://www.expresscp.com/ecommerce.htm So...if I was a betting man, I'd wager that "Music Moods" is a Euro-Pirate operation that has retained the services of some totally clueless fulfillment service in Memphis strictly for the sole purpose of dumping their product on what's left of the American remainder market. Or maybe the Memphis guys are in on it... I just called them @ 901-274-6366 to ask them if they were home of "Music Moods" records and then see what happened from there, but it's late Saturday afternoon & nobody was home. But a full list of contacts can be found here: http://www.expresscp.com/contact.htm

Went inside Big Lots today...they had this one (several copies, actually), as well as a few other things. Looks like Concord is dumping some stock into Cutout World...no OJCs, some other stuff.

Had not seen that Observer piece, thanks. And KNON is just not the same thing...you gotta have the commericals, ya' know?

http://www.wfaa.com/news/business/Longest-Running-Radio-Show-in-Dallas-is-Silenced-185380412.html I guess it's Seoul 73 now! Even with the advent of automated programming this was the last radio station in the area that played pre-hip-hop Black Music of all kinds AS Black Music, with all programming (music, news, commujnity affairs, advertisements, even) aimed at the Black Community. Some might ask what difference that makes, but as a long-time listener, I can tell you that it makes a HUGE difference as far as putting things into a factual socio-musical context as opposed to a re-creative/re-constructive one. And besides, you'd never hear Marvin Sease on the radio anyplace else. Not in these parts. Not that you'd really WANT to, but still...

and unlike the stereo version, it actually has "The Sky Fell Down" on it.

Yeah, Earl was ok in my book.

Just when you think you're out...

Definitely. I'm not one to go to Houston for anything other than to make some money on a society gig, but...

I recently obtained the LP. but it's such a good session that I'd like the bonus cuts. Now I gotta go back inside a Big Lots. Dammit, I thought I was done with that shit.

Go to http://www.namelesssound.org/ You can click on the artist photo of each event and be directed to a concert-specific page which in turn gives you a link to order.

Let's start at the beginning - this guy's LDS, a pretty badass football player, and he plays at Notre Dame instead of BYU? Not that there's anything wrong with that, but....let's take it from there.

No money there, trust me!

Got no interest in converting anybody (to anything!), just have a personal quirk about differentiating between people who do things because they have to and people who do things because they choose to and are able to. How one receives the results is up to the individual, and there are no "right" choices, really. But as far as the appreciation of the difference, you really don't know how good some people at certain things are until you get first-hand experience with how good so may other people aren't, even if they're not at all bad at it. I mean, this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3pRJ1_dE-4 is in no way this The first guy, he's doing what he's able to do, and he's worked hard to get it there, I'm sure. and it don't exactly suck, even if it ain't great. But Luther, Luther had options. Luther could soar, dip, dive, pretty much go wherever he wanted to any way he wanted to. And yeah, he worked hard to get it there too, maybe even harder than the first guy. But hard work is only part of it. Another part is your own ceiling, how much are you going to be able to get done no matter how hard you work. And Luther was one of those guys who had a really high ceiling. I get personal taste, but I also get the difference between an amazing instrument and anything/everything else, even a really good one. Respect for something and "liking" it are two things that only sometimes overlap, at least in my mind. That's all I'm saying, really.

And this isn't a Photoshop of some photo of Bird playing tenor in Eckstine's band superimposed over a photo of Hamp?
