  1. Sorry, those were separate items. A question about Byas and then a fantasy about the tapes.
  2. Was Byas in good form throughout, like all the way to the end? The mouth waters at the possibility of the entire thing still being intact somewhere, just waiting to be stumbled upon ...and not thrown away.
  3. I mean, I'm not the biggest Gary Giddings fan, but he's been there and done plenty of work, so hey. I'm certainly not dispirited by his selection.
  4. You taped the entire night (minus Byas)? Do you know how much of that has survived?
  5. There was some "outrage" back in the day about anybody releasing V-Discs at all because of the terms agreed to in their creation - that they were intended strictly as a service to service members, to never be used for commercial purposes. I don't know that anybody got paid? Services were donated to support the war effort, and that was supposed to be the end of it. Well, here we are! I'll still pre-order, but I do hope that the book tells the story of how these recordings went from being a sealed sacred text to serving as an unimpeded item of commerce. Who's finally gotten paid? Anybody? Anything? Veterans? I have no conscience, but I'd like to know anyway... What makes you think that? LOL!!!!
  6. The liner notes he wrote for Buster Smith's Atlantic side are unintentionally hilarious. That album is priceless just because of the music, so those notes are extra treasurous!
  7. Checked it out, thanks. You guys certainly bring some bop!
  8. Butters Skinnly - Tense Exchanges
  9. Not sure if the art work on some of the early Liberty jazz LPs have gotten full props for being as strange as they were.
  10. I've heard MANY bad (gymnastics are only gymnastics if they're controlled, otherwise it's anywhere from strained contortion to outright caterwauling), but none worse. That was truly godawful, even by amateur standards. Honestly, I thought that maybe this was a singer who really couldn't sing but had been studio massaged into sounding "good" on record. Milly Vanilly. But instead she was drunk. Tore down. Still don't know how well she really sings, but for sure, good luck on the rehab, and also take a long hard look at your management. That was a very...unhealthy experience.
  11. More adjectives, please. Push those boundaries until the break!!!!!
