  1. Ok, it's only in this forum that I can't start a new topic. As it should be,then. Never mind.
  2. I am signed in but cannot start a new topic. Huh?
  3. ...and I'm really not that much of a fan. But DAMN do I like her on this one!

  7. "Funkalerro"'s a bad motherfucker, but the rest of it didn't move me one way or the other.
  8. How old was Joe Oliver by the time this session was recorded?
  9. Well, that's another thing, why don't they save plastic by not making the CDs any bigger than the amount of groove? I mean, go green and all that, right?
  10. Makes sense to me.
  11. I could never figure out why a CD plays from the inside out. I guess it's easier on the needle, right?
  12. Mingus, remember, is a guy who was into overdubbing and shit long before it became commonplace. The studio was, for him, another tool of composing. Editing, restructuring, all that, hey that's part of what composers do.
  13. "Jazz recordings" should always be straight-up photographs of a live performance?

    Lockjaw!!!!!

Nor in mine, thus the "GOOD God!!!!" designation. There is a hierarchy, doncha' know... But seriously, this is my favorite tempo to hear Jaws play in. He was totally adept at any one, of course, but something about that medium, locked in the pocket walking tempo brought out something special in his phrasing, it seems to me. A less symmetrical use of space sometimes, and a little bit more "working" of his standard "devices". That, and his internal accents could really be heard more easily, not just felt. What a player he was...wholly unique, one of the rare, special ones.
  17. Well, I found The Amazing Toshiko Akiyoshi on sale at YesAsia and am cautiously optimistic that it will get here (by Jan perhaps). I have ordered through them before, so I know they are not just a fly-by-night website. That still doesn't change the fact that it is a (minor) scandal that her albums don't have distribution in the US. I guess she has such a low profile that it isn't even worth Lonehill's time to put out her early albums. Maybe she didn't hit her stride until 1961 which wouldn't be up for grabs for another couple of years (not that this has stopped them in the past), but I can think of 3 or 4 worthy albums released in 1958 or before. Oh well. Early Records seems to be the go-to for Japanese issues, but failing that, I've ordered many times from CD Japan (non-jazz items) with always impeccable results. Here's their Toshiko listings: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/search3.html?q=to...amp;order=score
  18. "Poincinana" is an all-around gas, but it's best heard on vinyl, as the CD mastering robs the cymbals & the Rhodes of their full whoooooshiness. As a point of curiosity, Newk also played Lyricon on The Way I Feel, but really, there's no need to listen to it - or anything else on that album - yourself, just take my word for it, ok?

    Lockjaw!!!!!

Three. & his harmonic-relative-to-the rhythm gamesmanship is on above-average display here.

    Lockjaw!!!!!

Having heard about a megagazillion Lockjaw blues choruses over the years, I respectfully but emphatically disagree.
