  1. Apparently the deck they brought into the club was 7.5. or maybe it was a tape conservation thing. Either way, Rudy immediately took those tapes back to his house and transferred them all to 15, and that's what's been used ever since. Or so they say. As for the sound, every recording made at the Vanguard I've ever heard has a muffled sound in some form or fashion. It's not at all a "live" room. But this was the first attempt recording there, right? Hold on to that RVG, though. In this case, recording order matters!
  2. But does anybody play any differently than usual? Not really? They all had good days, but they all had lots of good days. So maybe the point is that Blue Note screwed Grant Green by not having Duke Pearson involved in all of his records? Maybe, but not really. I will say this, they got great players, picked wonderful material, arranged it well, had it rehearsed well, and then hit what was obviously a good vibe when it came time to roll tape. What you can give Duke Pearson credit for (besides the charts) is not fucking up any of that, which is no mean feat in and of itself. It's its own art, really.
  3. Discogs says that he played with Otis Redding. And so does that obit.
  4. Old people get better at ballads. Meaning trumps proof.
  5. Did Ambrose Jackson leave behind any kind of biographical trail?
  6. Truth be told, most jazz players are licks players. The art is in how the licks are utilized.
  7. Baseball sucks. Except when it doesn't. But right now it does.
  8. I just Googled "Sanborn Gil Evans" and then filtered for videos. This was in there. As for more, probably so. The poster says that they got it from " a website that no longer exists", which no doubt means a blog. The odds of there being just that one track being recorded strike me as being quite remote.
  9. Listening to it now. It sounds just fine.
  10. Sanborn/Schneider/Gil This gets kind of intense before it's over. Know the lyrics and the meaning both, then sing it.
  11. Daisy & Rump Fowlers - Everything's Coming Up Posers!!!
  12. Oh, single CD. My bad, sorry.
  13. Aftermath was on the LP Or was there a different take/edit for that single?
  14. An All Star Lineup of The Swinging Gentlemen Of Jazz! I got it from Wolfgang a way back. An excellent set indeed.
  15. Come back, James Newton! And stick around, Bobby Bradford. Please!
  16. Bill Barron is on that one, right?
  17. Ok then, that's the same as the Bluebird CD, only it adds the two short jam excerpts that end each side of the LP. It's radically different enough that it would not be wrong to issue a double set, one of the LP + one of the revised Bluebird album.
  18. Soul Cowboy Guitar is where it's at, pahd!
  19. Lucy Mackelvane - Everyone's Dying But Me!!!
  20. Doesn't look like him?
  21. I bought the LP new, and cried tears on joy when that Bluebird CD came out that included greatly expanded versions of some of the cuts. Same one?
  22. Retirement has definitely liberated my natural inclination for event time. Loving it!
  23. You have an aversion to spirituals AND cowboy songs? What kind of an American are you, anyway?!?!?!?!?!?!?!????!!!!!!???????¿??
  24. It was (almost) all very good. No complaints here.
  25. Worth noting that Gil never went back to a bebop altoist after Sanborn. Chris Hunter was in there to the end and whatever his did with anybody else, with Gil he played what could probably called The Sanborn Chair.
