  1. Johnny Lytle - Everything Must Change Muse MR 5158 recorded 1977, released 1978 Also w/George Duvivier & Al Foster. And a harpist. And an Arp player. Kinda sounds like a "street" version of CTI, which has all the pros and cons that you might imagine, as well as some that you might not (like, doing "Send In The Clowns" in an uptempo "Sky dive"-ish-only-friskier groove, which works damn well, much to mu shock and awe). Is there any other non-Lloyd Proce example of BJP on anything besides organ? He only plays one solo on this album, but his comp is, as you might expect, waaaaay happening. Here it is not too far from 15 years after the label shut down, and I'm still discovering Muse sides that I never knew existed. Some of this stuff must've had extremely "local" distribution...
  2. It's like the Bob Graettinger zygote split in the womb & Esquivel got all the humor, Graettinger all the seriousness and there was enough brass to go around for both.
  3. This is from 1958, but damn...
  4. The title track on that one is one of the true marvels of our time, I think. And I say that as somebody who feels that The Flamingos' version is too, at least in terms of tempo and vocal phrasing and the rhythm of the sounds going into the reverb to never leave or return, and yeah, ok, maybe a lot of people don't listen to a record like that in that way, but I do. Not too many people work the mojo of reverb the way it can be worked. I never met Lester Bowie, much less "knew" him other than his music, but damn, that cat felt like a kindred spirit to me, a brother on some other plane than the one on which our temporal self resides, and damn do I miss not having him around still making music.
  5. I've not yet gotten to the Betsch, even though there have been opportunities along the way. No excuse other than that you always gotta leave something for later, it seems.
  6. This should already have happened - in Waxahachie.
  7. Agreement to all.
  8. Ditto, and tell Mr. S that it definitely was on a Mainstream LP. I got it back in the day, on the same day as their Brown/Roach curiosity Daahoud, an album that purported to be the group's demo tape but was actually a combination of issued and alternate takes. Ups & Downs is a difficult record, and not in a good way, but the live(?) version of "'Round Midnight" is just plain spooky.
  9. I find the whole idea to be silly. "I want to hold your hand" has all the sophistication its title suggests. No qualitative distinction from "Last Train to Clarksville". Lyrically, yes. Musically, no.
  10. Spank you kid? Get a sweater! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vHHzl9krPQ...feature=related Apparently kids playing "under the sprinkler" was a big issue back in '51!
  11. That's Dennis James as I'd never seen him before. Which is fine by me! But dude, look at what was a live daytime TV show in 1951 - an open studio with a few risers, a few chairs, and a few everyday women who you can tell dressed up to come out for the show & were home by dinner. You can see more elaborate production on some community access shows today!

  13. I remember going into either Sweet Basil or Fat Tuesday back in 1979 to catch a set by James Moody & being shocked to find that Al Harewood, who I had just assumed was already dead, was not only on drums, but was in fact not dead. Imagine my surprise! So, is Al Harewood still not dead?
  14. Was this actually produced for MPS, or did Schlitten already have it in the can from Cobblestone/Muse?
  15. Almost had to be. Thanks, Chuck.
  16. Recorded 1971 (the time of cobblestone/earliest Muse, no?), not released until 1974 on MPS, Moosy & Cohn, Barry Harris, Sam Jones, Roy Brooks, "East Of The sun", sure sounds like a Don Schlitten thing to me. Yes? No? If not, who? As always, thanks in advance!
  17. I checked out the Victor Feldman Generation Band things that El Chewrizo was talking about the other day, and although they didn't grab me like they did him, there are moments, and I can see the appeal. Cetain better than "typical", these albums are.
  18. If I were an organ player...I'd be grateful for that. Uh, dude...you posted a request for info about an Art Tatum item in the Hammond Zone...
  19. Did they not have it at all?
  20. Is "astonishing blather" Latin for "ignunt-ass punkfuck bullshit"? If I remember my studies correctly, I believe it is!
  21. This thread is really intended to lament the fact that the telethon got totally overshadowed by other events this year. Why lament? Hell if I know, it gets sadder every year. But still, it's....something.
  22. Buddy Rich & band used to do the Telethon.
  23. ...that it's Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon weekend! Darn hurricane! Darn Republican convention! Darn Alaskan teenage pregnant governor's daughter! Darn Alaskan hiring governor's lawyer! DARN THEM ALL!!!
