Ok, this is no doubt "off-topic", but for some reason it just seems like a natural fit for me to bring up the Booker Ervin/Horace Parlan collaboration on Candid, That's It. No, Booker Ervin is not Stanley Turrentine, but Horace Parlan is still Horace Parlan, and he brings to that album what he brought to the Turrentine sides (including George Tucker & Al Harewood). So it's kind of a "same thing only different" thing. Apologies for the off-topicicity.

So let's review: Dan Fogelberg = prostate problems Liza Minelli - prostrate problems Got it? Good! There will be a quiz in the morning.
-
Uh, that's a young Liza Minelli, and it'll be at the bottom of every one of Bright Moment's posts, not just the ones in this thread.

Teo...ain't no slouch. If CD Baby is still offering all the stuff he put out on his own label, I recommend y'all check it out. There's some pretty darn good stuff there that kinda comes out of nowhere.

L. Welk vocalist Natalie Nevins sing "Canadian Sunset"
JSngry replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Doesn't mean they didn't try... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yf2kbBinvI4 Wow, that is............sublime. On so many levels.....the dancers, the clarinet dude, the Tiajuana Brass treatment. Amazing. You know, the one thing about Welk that I kinda dig (make that "dig", ok?) is that the arrangements were always in flux in terms of texture. The arrangers had all these....sounds to work with, so they did. Every 8 bars or so, same old shit, yeah, but with a different instrumentation and a different texture. Voices, strings, keys, brass, woodwinds, percussions, you name it, they'd use it. Even if it was in the service of Musical Novacaine, there was still a certain "ingenuity" there that I gotta give some kind of props to. -

Doesn't mean they didn't try... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yf2kbBinvI4 Not a live performance. A lip-sync w/o lips, if you will. I repeat - not a live performance. Oh, the fraudulence of those who perpetrate! -

Ummm....I don't think anything ever put on the Welk show was done so because of its "cool" factor. Now on that one, you might be wrong. I remember on of the last shows, deep into the syndicated years, when Paul Humphrey (yeah, that Paul Humphrey) was the drummer & Welk actually let the band swing on a few numbers, there was one of the occasional "jam session" #s that would get thrown out/in every few months or so, and they did "How High The Moon" with a combo (Questa, HAvens, LaVang - who along w/Humphrey must be the only musicians to work w/both Lawrence Welk & Frank Zappa, I forget who else), and on the out-chorus, they hit it with "Ornithology". I nearly shit my pants, I kid you not. -

You know that she was gettin' macked by Gene Ammons doncha'? That megaphone thing on that particular song was just a "symbol" of her "drinking from the Jug", if you get my drift. Them Welk chicks was crazymad hornilicious, them was. -

And dig the up-on-one-leg flamingo imitation from the pink lady at the end. -

Your musical selections are presented in a broadcast/podcast format and not in "blog" format (I.e. - posting of copyrighted material in toto for the primary purpose of file-sharing) right? That's a subtle but important distinction here. We allow postings for the former, but not the latter. I checked your site out, and it looks like a good resource, with artist interviews and direct links to many labels. Nice!

Oh geez guys, think BIG, think big, think humanitarian, think Nobel Prize, think TAX BREAK. The book is so compelling that it could take a junkie's mind off the need for a fix. So market it as rehab and call it Putting The Kart Before The Horse. Do it now and pay me later, ok?

Seemed to be a quirky guy, but in a good way. Certainly left a legacy, that's for sure, an entire "style" of Atlantic jazz albums. Maybe not to everybody's liking, but now that time has passed, it's hard not to say that it was a style that impacted a lot of people. For instance, Rashaan's Mercury/etc. albums were good records, but his Atlantic sides ended up being "stories", more than "just" records. Debate the merits of that all you want, but don't deny the validity of the approach. And that's a style he carried to other artists too. So yeah, he had a thing, and more power to him for that. 65 is indeed too young, but hey, he didn't waste the time he had. RIP & gracias beaucoup for real.

Hardly a day goes by that I don't think about cricket! (well, ok, "a day" is a figure of speech, and like the biblical usage, could easily mean millions of years, and "think about", well..not consciously, but who knows what really goes on in the subconscious mind, and "cricket" is probably a euphemism for everything that falls into my personal "whatever..." category, but still, it's the thought that counts, right?)

Wow, assuming this is real (JUST KIDDING!) you get my fullest respect and "moral support" for having the gumption to roll like this. And I feel for you re:working w/your spouse. LTB & I frequently get crossways over something simple like putting up Christmas lights, so multiply that by, what, 300 bajillion? and I can only imagine the stress. But you know what they say, if it doesn't kill you (or you him)... Best of luck to you, and by all means, keep a running tab here as much as you feel like!

More thanks to all, and Rachel, good vibes & well wishes are always on time, so...hey!

Little Willie John - I need a better compilation

Very aware of the Beatles' Hamburg years myself, and the thing that most sticks wioth me is the hours that the gigs lasted. Long hours, the type of a gig that gets a band into well-seasoned form in terms of both abilitiy and repertoire. I've seen snippets of footag from, I think, The Star Club, and it shows a scene known to anybody who's worked in any house band at any bar - loud crowds, sweaty, (almost) dirty conditions, and the feeling that you crank it out all night every night for the benefit of a partying crowd no matter what. That kind of gig toughens you up in a wy that no other type gig can. "Great musicians" they weren't, but "pros" they definitely were. -

Morgan's junkie years were spent doing what junkies do to get money to support their habit. Several convictions for robbery, etc. & failed paroles.

The Dells singing Bacharach - Anybody Know This?
JSngry replied to JSngry's topic in Recommendations
Been regularly jamming this one, and I gotta say, it's a trip, mostly good. But the more I listen to it, the more I find myself saying, "wow, what the hell IS this?", and in a good way. -
Thanks again for all the kind words and birthday wishes. LTB took the afternoon off, both children have been out of the house, the weather's been cold and rainy, and life has been great!

We had an "Easy Listening" FM station in Tyler. Tx back in the 70s that would play Auger's "Kiko" on occasion, which always struck me as odd but welcome.

And the show that prompted this thread has been off the air for a while now. Don't know if the host moved away, or if it was a decision by KNTU, but now there is no good house/dance music on the radio here, period. And that's about the only genre of music about which that can be said. Dance underground indeed!
