  1. And ok, I'm about a week into this Antibalas side, and am still digging it heavily.
  2. Not necessarily. I like it quite a bit. Like I said, I don't really know McEntire, and am lukewarm at best about KV, but Exploding Star worked for me just fine.
  3. Onzy Matthews was a very talented arranger, Nothing "boundary stretching" or anything, just damn fine blues-based modern (for the time & place) big band work. A look at the sidemen will tell you what's up with that.
  4. Will this page be there tomorrow?
  5. Nicole Simpson Nicole Kidman Goat Boy
  6. Some Of My Best Friends Colored People Lenny Bruce
  7. Which ones, the ones that make you larger, or the ones that make you small? If you're talking about the ones your mother gives you, don't sweat it. They don't do anything at all.
  8. Hel-LO.... What date is it again today? Yeah, I know, but unless Mosaic be prankin', this is legit.
  9. I got .006472% just now, but I'll have to check my work when I'm in a more sober state. Higher than I'd imagine!
  10. Don't remember anything about an Elvin-obsessive, but wasn't Kevin Walters the cat who made getting that very first Grant Green session out of the vaults and into circulation his life's mission?
  11. What would really suck would be if your clock only adjusts for DST by 9 minutes...
  12. Well, alright then, let's shift the focus to this upcoming project: Hel-LO....
  13. Bruce Hall, eh? I can only hope that walls don't talk... Yess, 89-90. That was when the show was on NBC & called Sunday Night, co-hosted by Sanborn & Jools Holland, who, as much as I respect him in his realm was in waaaaay over his head in this one.. Then NBC dropped it and it went into syndication as Night Music, sponsored by Michelob & hoisted by Sanborn alone. There were some mighty fine moments on that show...
  14. What are the odds that the "gentrification" of the neighborhood & the health department "raid" on Tonic are totally unrealted coincidences?
  15. This one is more complete & better quality, video & sound: The way they led into it was w/a clip of "God Bless The Child" from Jazz Scene. Straight cut from the old to the (then) current. That's why Sonny quotes "God Bless The Child" in his intro. The sheer power & size of Rollins's sound here is a natural wonder. TenorGod in action.
  16. Yes, even if the intro is lightly truncated.
  17. Is this really necessary? I often wonder how documentary-worthy players like Tyner feel about having to participate in these wallow-ins, especially after 20 consecutive banner years for the Coltane heritage industry (see Ashley Khan hanging round and you know you're in that particular industrial area). The "WHOA!" was for the picture of Trane playing alto, nothing more. That's not a common sight.
  18. Same here, and those factors are still at play. But it sounds/feels as if their whole game's been bumped up a notch or two, and that has definitely caught my ear.
  19. Can't say that McEntire's role here is at all intrusive or otherwise cause for concern (and I don't know the whole Torotise thing at all, and only know Thrill Jockey through Ed Wilkerson), just that if he's done anything "hands on", he's done it in such a way that it plays to what the band's natural/organic tendencies are/were anyway, and gotten a DAMN fine record out of them as a result. I mean, I've been digging Antibalas for a while now, if only as a kind of "cool modern day" example of Fela Fetishism Done Well. But this album opens up the field considerably, and it's really speaking to me (especially "Fillibuster X") in a different way than their past work has. I'm digging it big time.
  20. The Bastards do not exaggerate, but if you buy it, buy it from a link throught the board, ok? Imagine Fela & Ra being in their prime right now & coming together to address the state of today's America. Just imagine that. Whether or not this is what it would sound like, I don't know, because this is now and they're both dead (which is kinda past anybody's prime), but even if it would or wouldn't sound like this, it would probably have a vobe like this, so hey. Highly recommended, even if I don't have a clue who John McIntire is just yet.
