I think the Mavs should beat Phoenix. Not sure about in how many games, though. Could be as little as 5. The Suns are the type of team the Mavs used to be until Avery got hold of them an taught them how to really play the game. Thing is, it's a team that hasn't fully internalized those lessons, and it's a team that will still occasionally lapse int their old ways. If they do that for too long in any one game, they'll lose that game. And if they do that for too long in too many games, they'll lose the series. Phoenix's shooters can and will take you out in a big hurry, and they can be counted on for at least one hot run per game. And Steve Nash. god blees him, is a freak. So yeah, the Mavs should beat Phoenix, and they should beat either Miami or Detroit. But it's far from a given. And until they do, some skepticism is indeed warranted. They've got to prove to everybody (especially themselves) that they have what it takes to maintain that championship focus. Hopefully the series against the Spurs was the big turning point that all of us Mavs fans hope it is. Only one way to find out. All I can say is this - there is nobody else I'd want coaching this team at this time than Avery Johnson. That's one helluva man.

Other than (maybe) Desmond, they all had a pretty good background in big band work, so they would know what had to be done. And Ball could play one helluva lead. The question isn't "could they?", it's "would they?". And the answer to that would probably vary from hour to hour...

"Black Vomit" w/o Anthony Braxton = something I'd probably not miss if I went my whole life without hearing, or hearing about. Probably. Maybe it's got a good lurch and I can spazz to it, but ya' know, teen appeal is not as important to me as it used to be. But "Black Vomit" WITH Anthony Braxton, hey, this I'd not mind hearing at least once. Braxton brings interest to everything he does. Probably be better seeing/hearing it in person, but oh well.

Amina's been very low-profile for the last 15 years or so, and her last leader dates (that I know of) were the ill-concieved "pop" dates for Novus (classic - epitomic, perhaps - examples of how, no, it's NOT easy to make good pop records, and how, yes, production DOES matter), but in the 80s she was unquestionably one of the most vital voices in the music. No reason to believe, until otherwise proven, that she still isn't, "profile" or not.

Have you heard the album of the same name? It's a duet w/Pheeroan ak Laff and is one of the great "unknown" (to the "general jazz public") organ albums. It's Leo LR 100 on LP. Don't know if it's been reissued on CD yet.

Sam Donahue - good player, had some fame in the 40s, then again in the early 60s w/Kenton. Perhaps the only tenor player to have more breath in his tone on ballads than Ben Webster. Wilton Felder - Crusaders/Jazz Crusaders. Helluva player, w/that badass Texas tone. Al Klink - Fine player, played in Glenn Miller's band. When you heard a tenor solo that didn't sound silly in that band, it was Klink. Eddie Miller - what can I say? The cat swung. Old school "white" player. They all shoulda been so good. Jimmy Woods - mostly an alto player, and a damn fine one at that. LA cat, made a few memorable appearances on Contemporary (one of his albums used Andrew Hill as a sideman) & w/Gerald Wilson, then kinda disappeared. Pete Yellin - also mostly an alto player. New York cat. Played w/Joe Henderson in the early 70s. Still around, but hasn't recorded, I think, in years. Another good player. The world's full of 'em.
