  2. One can reject Herbie's Vocoder, but one can never deny it!
  3. I once caught a CD going through my wallet looking for a condom to use to have sex with my dog. That one I got rid of.
  4. Indeed. When the WB box set of the Dial sides was released, it was in preparation for a "forthcoming" biopic starring Richard Pryor. This was in the mid/late 1970s.
  5. Not sure about CD, but new LP reissue copies are almost perpetually in stock at Dusty Groove.
  6. Well yeah, exactly. "French horn" ain't got nothin' to do with it. The guy was a player, period. Wouldn't matter if he played buttcrack.
  7. We had our romantic getaway over the weekend, but today is our actual anniversary, so let me tell you (and the world, because I can't keep this to myself) once more what is in my heart. The way our love continues to unfold and surprise us both is the biggest thrill I have in life. Like our mutual inspiration Monday sang, "I've been given a chance to love you". Sometimes we've taken that chance for granted, and nothing good has come from that. But more often than not (and never more than now), we've seized that chance and ran with it. Never have I felt such a passion and lust for life as I do now, and you are the source of it (and the reward for it). And I know that you feel the same - there's no other explanation for what's been going on between us lately. Why else can we look at each other for an instant and suddenly bust out laughing like a couple of schoolkids other than the sheer delerious joy of being totally in love? We're at the age when so many of our peers talk about passion like it's a game for young folks. I think they've just given up. Or out. Or both. Because we're not even remotely "young" any more, at least not in terms of the calendar, and our passion burns stronger now than ever. Stronger and wiser. Is there any doubt that our life together has been a gift, a blessing, a thing that we could have easily lost to carelessness, apathy, or just plain deadness of the soul? We have been given a chance (many chances, actually, more than we probably have deserved), and now more than ever, the life-affirming joy that comes from surrendering without question to the all-consuming, all-inspiring power of love is apparent to us both. I carry you in my heart everywhere I go, in everything I do. I live with you, by you, and for you. I might be "me" by myself, but I could never be me without us. Two have indeed become one. I have been given a chance to love you, and I pray that I take that chance with every drop of life in me until death us do part. I'd be a damned fool not to.

  9. Well, make what you will out of Brubeck's "heavy-handedness" (and I for one get tired of it fairly quickly), even if it is largely a result of a physical injury. What he always has had, and what The Lion responded to, was authority. Cat plays it like he means it in ni uncertain terms. Always has. Gotta respect that.
  10. Just which side of the bed is the wrong one, anyway? And what happens if you get out of bed at the foot end? Is that a potential wrong side, or does the triangulation thing sorta negate the potentiality for wrong-sidedness? You know, does two sides plus a foot sorta form a pyramid of bedness and therefore create a powerful field of positive energiness? These are the things I'm worried about these days, having figured out most of the other shit. Any informed and/or constructive information would certainly be welcome!
  11. Worth noting, perhaps, that Willie The Lion Smith praised Brubeck's blues playing in no uncertain terms in a DB BFT back in the day.
  12. What is my assessment? Cat was a helluva player, that's my assessment.

  14. No. The way to go would be the Falling In Love With Love, The Source and/or Lost Found, & All The Way. Those albums are iconic statements. Scott's Milestone sides are all good, but none capture him at either his vocal or interpretive peak the way those do.
  15. And I our 23rd... All I can say, having met both parties, is that quality attracts quality, and character attracts character. "Personality" is the least of worries over time. Anne is a truly beautiful woman, and Chuck is one helluva straight-up kinda guy. Much love for them, individually and collectively.
  16. That was the seemingly unanimous consensus of those who actually knew Bird, as it was with the Ross Russell bio.
  17. Herbie's used a vocoder.
  18. Forrest Whittaker would make a good Cannonball.
  19. Indeed. That's how I first came to hear him, on Henry's Pi releases. Threadgill's never worked with a drummer who's turned in less than exceptional performances, and Prieto's work is no exception.

  21. Billy on record is great. Billy live is beyond great. The "flaws" that may exist on records are swept away by the sheer physical & spiritual energy of him & his group. Don't miss it if you ever get a chance to hear him.
  22. I don't think I qualify as a serious jazz musician either. I like dance music, I'm intrigued by hip-hop/electronica production techniques, I enjoy vocals (well, some of 'em), I don't mind talking to an audience, and I don't mind playing requests (well, some of 'em). Guess I'm a muddle-headed sellout. Oh well!
  23. Are there no better headphones available in this man's country?
