  2. It is indeed called Special, and in my opinion, it is anything but. As far as I know, it is Lloyd s first record with Chico, and the band is still playing in the "cool" chamber mode. The material and the band both sound really tired. Better things were just around the corner, however. Although, there is a totally hip long drum solo on the last tune (called "Trio" IIRC) that is worth hearing a few times. But other than that... The label you found it on is Odyssey. That was a Columbia subsidiary that I think was dedicated to preserving "historical" material, although why this one qualifies is beyond me.

  4. Local opinion as I've been getting it is near-unanimous that the Mavs are a gutless bunch who stabbed their coach in the back by reverting to Nelly Ball when crunch time came. To those who haven't followed the team all season and seen the difference (and the difference in tangible results) between Nelly Ball and Avery Ball, this might seem like so much whining, but believe me (or not) when I tell you that this wasn't just a case of inexperience or anything like that. Thses guys had proclaimed all season long that Avery Ball was the way to go, and the results proved them right. Then, when it came time to make the point once and for all, they backed off the committment for 3 7/8 consecutive games. Backstabbing cowards, that's what they proved to be. Unless and until they can prove otherwise, that's how me and a lot of other locals are looking at them. Big Al excepted, of course.

  11. The social/intellectual dynamic which produced the great, undeniably(you know, the by now (mostly) dead guys that all of us - including myself - continue to draw inspiration of all types from) individual jazz players no longer exists. Or, to be more accurate, it has evolved. The question has now become, imo, how bad do we want/need to hold on to the "style" at the possible expense of losing relevancy to the evolved "substance" of this dynamic? And as a corollary to that - does a music that comes from a different dynamic yet still "sounds like" jazz qualify as same (and what difference does it make)? And as a further corollary - what does it mean that these questions are even being asked in the first place? Jazz is dead. Long live jazz.
