  3. In 5, eh? Kinda...bold, don't you think?
  4. Amina's been very low-profile for the last 15 years or so, and her last leader dates (that I know of) were the ill-concieved "pop" dates for Novus (classic - epitomic, perhaps - examples of how, no, it's NOT easy to make good pop records, and how, yes, production DOES matter), but in the 80s she was unquestionably one of the most vital voices in the music. No reason to believe, until otherwise proven, that she still isn't, "profile" or not.
  5. Have you heard the album of the same name? It's a duet w/Pheeroan ak Laff and is one of the great "unknown" (to the "general jazz public") organ albums. It's Leo LR 100 on LP. Don't know if it's been reissued on CD yet.

  7. Sam Donahue - good player, had some fame in the 40s, then again in the early 60s w/Kenton. Perhaps the only tenor player to have more breath in his tone on ballads than Ben Webster. Wilton Felder - Crusaders/Jazz Crusaders. Helluva player, w/that badass Texas tone. Al Klink - Fine player, played in Glenn Miller's band. When you heard a tenor solo that didn't sound silly in that band, it was Klink. Eddie Miller - what can I say? The cat swung. Old school "white" player. They all shoulda been so good. Jimmy Woods - mostly an alto player, and a damn fine one at that. LA cat, made a few memorable appearances on Contemporary (one of his albums used Andrew Hill as a sideman) & w/Gerald Wilson, then kinda disappeared. Pete Yellin - also mostly an alto player. New York cat. Played w/Joe Henderson in the early 70s. Still around, but hasn't recorded, I think, in years. Another good player. The world's full of 'em.
  8. OH HELL YEAH INDEED!!!! That's the kind of shit that brings joy to my heart. Seriously.
  9. Mickey Baker & Hawk together, feeding off of each other's shit. Amazing, simply amazing. Gotta tell you, that might vbe some of the best Hawk I've ever heard. Definitely the best blues playing by Hawk I've ever heard. Blows a lot of preconceptions, including mine, waaaaaaaaaay out of the water...
  10. Didn't Bird so a guest spot on Jerry Lester's Broadway Open House? "Almost Like Being In Love"? Seems like I remember reading about that somewhere.
  11. Definitely. That was nice.

  13. There'll be enough someday. Billy Harper is a true healer. 'Nuff said.
  14. That's Mondo Grosso, who I gather was the premier Japanese "Acid-Jazz" of the 90s. Good stuff, and a group/scene I wouldn't mind checking out at leisure in the future. But Monday's moved way, way beyond that... And yeah, today's Saturday, and I do go out and play. For a Memorial Day "extravagnza" featuring a Bob Hope impersonator hosting a "Cavalcade Of Stars" which is also a bunch of "celebrety impersonators". Don't think I'll be going to church on Sunday, but after all that, you best believe I'll be getting down on my knees to pray...

  16. Don't know nearly as much about Dekker as I should, but I do know that he was a pioneer, and that "The Israelites" was just the tip of the iceberg.

  19. There was actually a tangental personnel and/or personal connection between the Bonzos & The New Vaudeville Band, but damned if I remember what it is, and damned if I care. But I do remember seeing the NVB on, I think, Hollywood Palace back in the day, and they had a pretty off-the-wall stage schtick. Come to find out, they stole it from the Bonzos. That I do remember.
  20. Well, I don't think I'm in any way a stereotypical eltitist jazz fan, but I gotta tell ya', the Idol show don't do much for me at all. Different strokes, and all that, but like a friend of mine once said when I responded to his dissing of the Elvis Sun sides as music for ignorant hillbillies by saying that it was soulful music for ignorant hillbillies, "Fine. Let them have it then!"
  21. Definitely a joke.
  22. What's up w/the heart attack on the way to the hospital? And why is the family suddenly "satisfied" witht he police account? Hmmmm....
