  1. How about Unsquare Dancer?
  2. Oh, RCA/Novus. Yeah, I suppose I am.
  3. What Sextet albums were on Arista/Novus?
  4. Brookmeyer himself, apparently (see the opening note...).
  5. Some of my best friends are jerks. Hell, most of my best friends are jerks!
  6. Brookmeyer's "crustiness" is well-known. Some might say that he's "earned it", or, at least, that it's not something he displays just for his own sadistic glee. Life does funny things to people, ya'know?
  7. I've had Dells exclusively for about 10 years now, and have been well-pleased. I've heard a few horror stories, but in proportion to the number of "satisfied" customers, the percentage seems really low. The outsourcing of Tech Support is troubling, though. My first experience with it was extremely frustrating, my second much less so. So the jury's still out afaic. But I will say this - as far as being ready out of the box, no tricks, no gimmicks, no surprises, no screwups, and staying ready to run, I've not seen or heard of any better PC. If your mother-in-law's not going to be engaging in any "risky" behavior computer-wise, I think she'll be well-served by a Dell. Still, buy the extended service plan anyway. One accident and it pays for istself. And they WILL come to your house for free if you play super-dumb and/or scared shitless when they try to walk you through attempting to fix it over the phone first. Of course, if you like to learn on the fly, like I do, the fixing it by phone is pretty cool, But I know soem folks who aren't, who said "NO WAY", and they got in-house service w/no questions asked. GOOD service, too! No such thing as perfect, to be sure, but I've still got no reason not to buy a Dell the next time out.
  8. I find these statements to be of more interest than the simple matter of a specific reissue: Agree or not, it's definitely something to think about...
  9. Who's Gil Noble?
  10. Not sure that it's Bley's nature to have been "helped along" like that. The guy seems to be as slippery and elusive a person as he is a player. And I mean that in a totally non-pejorative way. It's what "makes him him", if you know what I mean.
  11. Does he appear healthy, all things considered?
  12. That is, I believe, exactly the point that Mr. Belden was making.
  13. Is he playing?
  14. It seems that decisions are made in part by advance retail order, and that 800 wasn't sufficient. I think that Blakey, Silver, Woody Shaw and Mulligan all have bigger names than Brookmeyer, and would generate larger retail order numbers. Mulligan, remember, was a gen-yew-ine STAR once upon a time! And Blakey & Silver are also pretty big names outside the cognoscenti. If anybody's got questionable profile from that list, I think it'd be Woody. What I'm wondering now is if this "strategy" explains the endless postponements of certain sets, notably all the Miles boxes. Are they holding out on actual release until they get satisfactory retail order numbers? Just a thought.
  15. I've got a fair amount of Bley in my collection, but not nearly as much as I want/need, and unfortunately, not this one. Will read the commentary on this one with interest, and will pick it up first time I see it, whenever that should be,
  16. Pity that he don't have a rich celebrety daughter to step in and make things right.
  17. You can read that fine print? Wow... Ok, 4 bands on a 45, 7-8 minutes tops on a speech-only 45, Hank's loaded, how much do you think it's going to be of him? Again, I'd love to hear it, but at what price? I still say we need Aric to go jack this thing.
  18. I'd get these first and then go for the rest.
  19. Reading the fine print, I see this: And others! How many others? Is it possible that Hank's "speech" consists of only a few sentences? Remember, by most accounts, he was pretty loaded that night. There were lots of people giving "speeches" that night, and this sounds like it might be a collection of soundbites. It is, after all, a 45. I'd still love to have/hear it, but at what cost?
  20. Well, he's on a Lonnie Smith Kudu side (Mama Wailer on which AMG has him listed as "Cabbell"...), plays one solo IIRC, but I'm darn near certain that he was on some 3-tenor date (or some such) on BS/SN as well. Didn't know about that Lytle side, though. How is it?
  21. Holy shit! Just found this on http://home.att.net/~lankina/jazz/upcomingcds.html Personnel includes Melvin Sparks & Jymie Merritt! AMG says: Jimmy Witherspoon recorded a series of excellent albums for Verve in the late '60s. Unfortunately, these have not received the attention they deserve, and are frequently relegated in Witherspoon's huge catalog. The Blues Is Now is arguably the finest of these recordings, and Witherspoon's voice is in top form and hugely expressive. Like all of the artist's albums of the decade, it's not the most consistent of listening experiences, but that's of little interest when songs and performances are as good as "My Baby's Quit Me" and Witherspoon's own "Late One Evening." A light-night blues classic, this is Witherspoon at his most relaxed and assured and is a joy to listen to. I'm a big Spoon fan, but not a big enough of one to have known about this side. Preorder price @ CDU is $8.39!!!! I'm there!
  22. Just talked to Briath....he said Marvin is in Pittsburgh he thought...but has prostate cancer and it might be fairly progressed... ← That's a drag... I talked with a blackjack dealer in Vegas back in 1981 who was a big jazz fan. He knew (and dug) Cabell and said that he was living and playing in Baltimore then. So, the cat's moved around some, it seems. Wasn't he on some Black Saint/Soul Note album from the mid-1980s?
  23. Gary Smulyan? Why?
  24. Yeah, Tome VI on Verve. Trippy, ain' it!
