  1. Bought this last weekend, and, yeah, very good stuff.
  2. Or that Green Acres was rural surrealism.
  3. Turrentine did a fine one on BN.
  4. Was anybody in the room whistling "Peanut Vendor" at the time?
  5. My heart would be a fireball...
  6. The opening title sequence/theme song alone gives it away that this ain't no "serious" sci-fi attempt.
  7. I don't see no place to vote for anything, much less Organissimo.
  8. I like a lot of their stuff, but have a problem with the more "prissy" John Lewis things. But yeah, they did some fine work, and their legacy bears consideration and exploration. As always, I recommend this one to all but the most ardent MJQphobes, if ti can be found:
  9. IIRC, Ozzie & crew were seriously on the banana peel, & The Virginian was pretty rock solid in the ratings (and with a 90 minute weekly show as well!). I watched LIS sometimes, but only when the old man wasn't into The Virginian. Such was life in the Dark Ages of single TV households...
  10. I wouldn't know either, but a phone call to the Disney toll-free under the guise of requesting some information for a possible vacation could probably get you some leads, eventually. Those folks LOVE to be of service to guests and potential guests. Seriously.
  11. Yes. Beer, liquor (mixed drinks and bottles), and cigarettes. On the grounds and in the hotels (you could only buy bottles in the hotels). Limits on the booze sales, though. One per person per trip to the counter. But no limit to how many counters you could visit....
  12. No, and no. The daughter's not into that, thankfully. Did ride Space Mountain a few times though. Still a treat, but the Aerosmith coaster at the MGM park smokes it.
  13. Do you know how wiggy it is to check into a hotel (not just any hotel, mind you, but a DISNEY hotel) @ 11 P.M., fall into the bed asap, wake up 3 hours later, stumble into the bathroom to take a dump, sit down, start tcb-ing, and just as the eyes start focusing see LESTER YOUNG on the wall right in front of you? Not just once, but many times?
  14. I would question the "unintentionally funny" part. Pretty sure that the writers and the actors were aware of the Stoopid Factor more often than not.
  15. Nope. Couldn't find it on the web, but I've seen it before. It's a head and shoulders only shot (and please, no shampoo jokes! ), possibly from the same shoot as the one on pg. 34 of the Verve Box book.
  16. Not taking this at implied face value (whatever the hell that means...), I would tend to agree. Freddie (for a while, anyway) seemed to always be looking for new technical means & challenges through which to channel his obviously high-energy personality. Lee, otoh, played what he was with what he had (which was quite a bit, obviosly), and, although never stagnating, seemed less interested in creating/solving new technical breakthroughs than with just "being" in whatever/wherever the moment found him in. Freddie always (in the "good ol' days, anyway, always seemd to me to be trying to go beyond the immediate moment. Both men created some remarkable music, each in their own way, but whoever said that these were two different minds and personalities had it right.
  17. Slept in the same bed with him too! Whilst at Disney World, we stayed at their "family-friendly"-priced All-Star Music Resort, where the "theme" was, of course, music. This meant three-story high maraccas, a cheapo photo gallery in the lobby (some nice Gottlieb shots, though), music-themed decor in the rooms, & BET On Jazz on the TV. The bedspreads and wallpaper each had the same design, the former in color, the latter in shades of green and white. What that pattern was was a "painted" collage of photos of musicians, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ersel Hickey, among them. And Lester Young. I nearly tripped out on the spot. The photo used as reference for the painting was the one of Prez (Paris, 1959, iirc) - black jacket, hat on, horn straight down, eyes checking out the scene one last time. First time I've ever taken pictures of hotel wallpaper and bed coverings.
  18. It's true. And probably more commonly known was that MPG's first wife, Anna, was Barry Gordy's sister. She was much older than Marvin, and Marvin was much older than Janice, who was, at the time of their meeting, a Soul Train dancer. Both marriages were apparently quite "interesting"... How's that Dyson book compare to Divided Soul by David Ritz?
  19. Add to that the killing in Chicago of that judge's family..... it's like someone issued an edict to kill everyone who's ever wronged somebody....... It starts at the top...
  20. Not my fave by a long shot, but a historically important record for sure, and one that is certainly not without great moments. "Jungle Book", that's the cut that gets me. Fascinating in many different ways.
  21. Tomorrow, if all goes well.
  22. Eddie Gladden? YEAH!
  23. Charlotte Moorman could have done it, maybe.
  24. There's an excerpt in this month's Jazz Times. If you're a well-studied type, there's nothing new and/or better written than waht's already been done. Might be a good read for a newer fan, though. Still, the Shipton and the autobio are the two things I'd recommend to anybody who asked. Neither are perfect, they're just the best so far.
  25. Good to be back, really. Vinyl Freak in Tampa. A few good deals, but no braggable scores.
