  1. Truer words have never been spoken. Especially that last one.
  2. Although, how many schools have a Ran Blake (a.o.) on the faculty?
  3. Never knew of that one! w/Leonard Cohen on "Night Music", yeah, but not w/Garland Jefferies on PBS. Now all I need to find is that version of "I Told Every Little Star" that Sonny played as the theme to some short-lived ABC sitcom. Got any leads on that? GREAT video, btw. Especially how whenever the guy who the song's somewhat of a tribute to has a feature spot, they cut away to some footage of Garland Jefferies walking on the streets. Classy! Art Blakely (more than once!) inDEED!
  4. There's a joke for Johnny Carson in here somewhere...
  5. To be honest, Johnny was out of gas the last few years (or more) that he was one. The routines were predictable and tired, and a lot of going throught the motions was going on nightly. He was right to retire. Still, I was bummed when he did it (videotaped the last two weeks, I think...), and I'm now bumed to hear that he's passed. I was hoping for something - a guest spot on Letterman, or SOMETHING to get another glimpse or two of the real deal in action.
  6. Hell, I can't even afford kids. But I got'em anyway. Always the collector!
  7. Has Ricky Ford w/Mercer Ellington been mentioned yet?
  8. When did Sonny record with Garland Jeffreys?

    Don Ellis

Glenn Ferris made a memorable appearance on this one: Tony Scott's African Bird: Come Back! Mother Africa My sister bought a folio of flute solos of then-current hit songs assembled by Fred Selden back in 1975 or so. I confiscated it from her (for trivia reasons) after she quit playing, and still have it in the closet. I'll have to dig it out and get the exact date of it and see what he was doing then. I know it was after he left Ellis.
  10. Where Dmitry's design and mine differ is that he uses support rods, and I use full-length blocks of wood - solid, front-to-back support. I've never had anything collapse/break on me, but I don't use particularly long individual shelves, either. If you do, you need extra vertical supports, spaced to equally distribute the weight across the length of the shelf. As for lateral stability, well, there's a reason why so many shelving systems are enclosed in the back by a large piece of something, and it ain't just to keep the stuff from falling out.
  11. Sonny loved the Westerns as a kid. So besides any subversion of the iconography (and I won't question that there was that element involved), there was genuine affection for it as well.
  12. I'll bet it's the bootleg then. I bid up to $20 for it, didn't get a high bid, and then quit. I'd love to hear it someday, but life's like that sometimes.

    Overlooked Altos

    Excellent album.

  16. Tony, did you get the one I sent you yesterday?
  17. The 70s 2-fer LP set (PACIFIC STANDARD TIME) should be floating around in some places for not too terribly bad a price (a quick net search shows $25 to be the norm). Don't know how much deterioration the masters had undergone by then, but that's how I've got this music and it sounds ok, if a little "cloudy"... Get it, burn it, and tweak it to your tastes, if you're so inclined.
  18. It doesn't. Unless you can't fit it all in. Then there's a problem for all concerned.
  19. Something by Pops Poopadeaux. Anything.
  20. Seems like we discovered the offering (and ordered it) independently and somewhat simulataneously! Yeah, I saw Von, George, Earland (even if he's on Arp...), & Frazier, and bit IMMEDIATELY. As, it appears, did you. And who can blame us?
  21. As is the influence of African-American collegiate marching bands on the styles/approaches of the horn sections of THOSE bands.
  22. Pats will be so thrilled that the temperature is above 0 that they go crazy like schoolkids on a sugar buzz. Dammit.
  23. Personally, I think that "Empty Head Blues" would make a great title for something. Just not for this show...
  24. And also, there's that Lionel Hampton Groove Merchant side w/Buddy on drums where they play some kinda "funky" stuff. I heard that blind one niight, and was astounded by the drummer, how much SERIOUS ass he was kicking in that groove. When I found out that it was Buddy, I was shocked and not shocked, if you know what I mean.
