The Recovery Room and the Arandas was the one real jazz club I got to know, the latter being a "sometimes" jazz club by the time I got to be old enough to go. 6051 was a sick joke - it sprung up after the demise of The Recovery Room, and was everything its predecessor wasn't - It was being in a rich man's living room "observing" a band play instead of being part of a real scene. To make matters worse, Bill Donelly, who along w/wife Jeanie owned the RR, had to take a bartenders gig at the 6051 in order to pay bills. To see this man who once ran the hippest joint in Dalls now wearing a vest and bow tie and calling people "sir" and serving up drinks that were half as strong for twice the price was heartbreaking, and from the look on his face and the tone of his voice whenever he served one of his club's regulars, as much, if not more, for him than for us. A lot of places have sprung up sine The Recovery Room, some of them pretty good, actually, but none of them were as organic as The Recovery Room. It WAS jazz. Now as for Sambucca's. Hey - fuck them. simple as that.

My two Favorite Freds are still the Nessa and the Moers.

So ... Walmart only gets "proletarian" income, and Target gets the income of what I guess might be described as the middle class and those who really aspire to it. What is going to happen to all those poor proletariat people? They start shoplifting from Wal-Mart?

Maybe as a two-fer with THE EARLY BEATLES? Ah, the joys of nostalgia...

If that was all there was, it would be enough. R.I.P., and thanks.

Is the winter in Whitehall not cold enough to delay replacement?

Finished reading this a few weeks ago, and I basically agree with Mike. Shipton's "historical" research seems to be impeccable, and clears up a lot of myths and such in terms of chronology, as well as providing more personal detail than has heretofore been generally available. But the the autobiography still gives a better portrait of the "flavor" of the man. I'd say the two books compliment each other.

Dan Morgenstern
JSngry replied to Brad's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Well, I think that was Morgenstern's quote. Pretty sure that it is, 99% or so certain. But if I'm wrong, I need a good correctin'... -
I just want to thank John B again for sending me a copy from Up Yonder. Don't know what's going on with the Global Postal Affair, but it's unfortunate that such great music is being delayed.

He's also on Johnson's new Delmark side. And that vinyl is not to be missed by fans of big-toned old-school tenor. Recommended.

A good friend has sent me a bunch of live Von material, and Young John Young is on a whole bunch of it, much to my delight. I dig the guy's slyness, how he seems to be one of thee guys who watches and hears everything and everybody, and then coments on it allwhen he plays. Nothing has passed him by. I wonder - is he old enough to have heard Earl Hines from the Grand Terrace days? I ask because there seems to be a lot of Hines in his "attitude", and, more specifically, some of his devices, notably the way he'll repeat a right hand pattern while playing stabbing melodies with his left. For that matter, Hines seems to have had an impact on many of the Chicago pianists who came up in Young's era and slightly after - that whole "trumpet style" right hand and such. But I'm no expert on this, so maybe I'm wrong. As for recommendations, I honestly couldn't tell you what all I've got/heard with him on it. All I can say is that if John Young is on it, check it out. He's on a fair amount of Delmark thiings over the years, and Argo/Cadet (I think). Plus, he's on some of that Dex/Jug THE CHASE thing, which is "essential" for anybody even remotely into that kind of thing. Bottom line - if you start hunting around for records with John Young on them, you'll inevitably end up hearing a great variety of the best that Chicago has had to offer over the last 50 or so years, which is to say some of the best that jazz has had to offer.

Marty's getting one directly from me, and he's agreed to cover Florida. His disc went out yesterday in the same mailing as Al's.

Fave "Miscellaneous" releases of 2004

I bought 3 new (as in still sealed and full-priced) non-jazz records this year, the most of the century, and probably the most in the last 20 years or so. All three have proven to be gems that promise to have lasting vlaue over the long haul. In reverse chronology - BEAUTIFULLY HUMAN - Jill Scott SMILE - Brain Wilson MUSICOLOGY - Prince When I was 48, it was a very good year. -
Just came in on a break and saw this. A brilliant idea! So, one's on the way to you. Thank LTB for her understanding. Spread it around widely and thickly. The Big Al Express is gettin' ready to ROLL!
