  1. The playing is as good as the piano is bad. Burrell's a "buried teasure". Explore and enjoy.
  2. Square and white, right?
  3. At first glance, I read "squire" as "square". And didn't bat an eye.
  4. James Brown - SOUL ON TOP.
  5. I've always wondered if Mary Lou's somewhat "free" piece "A Fungus Among Us" (form BLACK CHRIST OF THE ANDES) wasn't, in both title and execution, a dig at Cecil.
  6. I thought it was Just Dryin' Out. That's still a work in progress...
  7. Yeah, I think I've heard that both principals (and their entourages) were totally pissed by the end of the night. Which makes the title, EMBRACED, pretty damn funny.
  8. The classics never go out of style!

    Leon Thomas

There's more to Leon than the yodelling.
  10. Don't know what Michigan (or any other states') Blue Cross/Blue Shield is like, but here in Texas it seems to be the most service-oriented of the insurance companies. Brenda's worked in one aspect or another of the "managed care" industry for the last 20 years or so (sometimes to her chagrin and disgust), and she's now working fior BCBS. She says that she's never seen an insurance company so dedicated to patient care. Of course, they have to screen claims and guard against fraod, but apparently BCBS places a premium on having trustworthy and compaaionate doctors in thier network. She's heard storieds of doctors being expelled for attempting to skimp on patient care. Many companies would offer a reward for that! I don't know if every region operates under this same philosophy, but if they do,you're in good hands. Anyway, all I'm, trying to say is that it sounds like you're set to get quality diagnosis and care, so all that's left is the waiting, which can be a hell in and of itself, so stay strong, feel the love, and give the love. Because love is just about the only thing that won't drive you crazy in a time like this. Y'all are definitely in my prayers/meditations/focused private thoughts/whatever. Definitely.
  11. In Dallas, it's http://www.elfenix.com/HISTORY.HTML
  12. You're a better man than I am.
  13. Tell you what - I've never liked non-dairy "milks" even in principal, but this stuff ROCKS!
  14. Funny thing about that Wire review/followup is that both parties are correct.
  15. It strikes me as one of those examples of how jazz sounds when it thinks nobody's looking. I like that quite a bit, but not everybody does.

    Anthony Braxton

Had a listen to this recently picked-up item (found still-sealed at a local Half-Price Books, so it's probably been remaindered in quantity )last night: Wonderful music! Made me smile out loud!
  17. To call the guy's career "erratic" would be putting it mildly, but when he was good, he was very good. RIP, and thanks.
  18. Free Fathead video available for download om Organissimo! If this ain't cool, then ain't nothin' cool. Much love, Barak, much love.
  19. To invert what people liked to say about President Clinton, Red was not particularly wide, but he sure was deep. And speaking as someone who heard him in person locally often enough throughout the 1970s to have an "informed" opinion, I feel comfortable saying that he deepened quite a bit after he went off the scene. What he lost in right hand fluencey due to semin-retirement, he gained in harmonic depth. Many a night he'd open a tune like "On A Clear Day" with a looooong unaccompanied introduction that would really take the tune apart harmonically and put it back together in some startling ways. I'd feel quite comfortable in attributing some of these "directions" to the influence of Bill Evans, sure, but when Red went into the tune proper, it was pure Red, and it stayed that way. Now maybe that gives us some insight into the whats, whys, and hows of the Evans/Davis intersection. Or maybe not.
  20. Which element of the personnel do you find unusual? That's pretty much the LIVE-EVIL band.
  21. Well, it DOES!
  22. Have to disagree (again). I think it's a dandy side. Looser than hell, yeah, but that's not a problem for me.
  23. I heard it earlier this week, and found it to be very good. The constant non-free-ish "high intensity" of the pieces kind of made be want to come up for air a few times, but I was listening on headphones at a particularly busy night at work. Lots of distractions. I relistened at home later that morning, and it was cool.
  24. Me stupid-ass donkey who no like neurotic navel-gazing that rushes. Seriously, for me, when Evans is good, he's great. Truly great. But he's not that good that often, not in terms of his overall output.
