When it comes to "Sh'Boom", there is The Crew Cuts version, which is a Weapon Of Mass Emasculation that needs to be totally eradicated from the American Consciousness, and The Chords' original version on Atlantic, which is sublimely swinging (you could even call it jazz in this regard), with a marvellous tenor solo by (I think) Sam Taylor, and which is welcome on my turntable ANYTIME!

You cannot be a Marvin Gaye completionist without certain Moonglows sides. Anybody heard how they do "Blue Velvet"? Magic.
-
Binding to the point of cutting off circulation!
-
The Moonglows RULE! If you don't yet know this, take the time to learn it, because it is true. And the Flamingos thing on "Eyes" has a groove to die for, no shit. Certain many jazz players should be able to ride the pocket like that. And that wrap-araound swath of massive reverb air-conditioning just seals the deal. Yeah, I dig doo-wop, because each night I ask the stars up above, "Why must I be a teenager in love?" 1,2,3...Look at Mr. Lee! Oh HELL yeah I love doo-wop!

Any cavities filled?

Chuck, did you ever have the opportunity to catch her with Jug?

I snooze, I lose. "Now's The Time" it is.

When I die (and if I keep slammin' the McGriddles, that could be any day now...), the franchise is YOURS!
-
Not until you also get SONG FOR MOTHER E on Leo! An unheralded GEM of an organ record!
-
I'll give you 49.9% of the North American publishing and a composer's credit. That's my best offer. Deal?

Ah, the spelling bugaboo strikes again! Thanks, Jan!

Well, the restaurant thing is good, because it provides giggage, but it's kinda NOT good, because it tends to attract people who ant jazz as a lifestyle accessory, if you know what I mean. They don't want jazz, they want "jazz". That's a drag, but so is unemployment... OTOH, if we had to depend on REAL jazz fans to support a scene, how much of a scene would there be? In a lot of cities, that would mean musicians and a relatively small handful of other folks. Whoopie! If that's not the scene in the town "you're" (meaning whoever reads this), congratulations! Let's face it - in most of America, jazz is really not a music that has relevance to most people other than some vague "image" to draw upon as needed (which is very seldom, and is usually very shallowly). The "smooth" stuff seems to be an exception, though. So what's the message THERE, huh? Well, I think there are several, some good, and some not good, but the bottom line (get me started on this in detail and I'll type all damn day, which I do NOT have the time for...) is that for most folks, going out to hear the same old same old played by cats who don't really care if they're playing for an audience or in a jam session by themselves is not something that's going to be, un, "endearing". So you can play "Just Friends" really, REALLY well. B.F.D.. Can you play it really, REALLY well WITH PERSONALITY, offer people something besides a sample of what got you an "A" in improv class? Can you tell a story that somebody wants to hear? If you can't, either play something you CAN tell a story on (even if it's...gasp...COMMERCIAL SOUNDING  ) or else keep your jazz playing to yourself. If watching data entry turned people on, then the offices of America would come replete with bleachers, no? Well, listening to a bunch of cats who know all the answers before the questions are even going about routinely giving the correct answers to every question asked is about like the musical equivalent of data entry. You'd think that this much would be evident to all concerned, but I guess not...

Now you're REALLY scaring me - "L.R.T" was MY first thought too! But upon further review, I thought that maybe "Bye-Ya" might be more singable by the masses. But maybe not... What I'm REALLY thinkng is that to make this thing work, it's going to take an ORIGIANL song, one that capitalizes on the image and cachet of cool that Monk has without actually USING any of it. You know, sell the image, not the substance. People LIKE that, ya'know! Anybody want a McGriddle? The syrup's baked in, ya'know.

This ain't your first rodeo, is it...

Just joking witcha. I'm flattered, really! And Phil - are any of the bands you're involved with actively touring?

I'm no doctor, but my guess would be a rogue virus. Them fukkers come in all kinds of durations, and they're constantly mutating, or so I'm told. You might have just proved Darwin's case without even knowing it! But the fever did what it was supposed to do, so all's well, right? I laugh whenever people get freaked out and start swallowing aspirin and stuff at the slightest hint of a fever. No, No, NO! Let the fever do what it's supposed to do - kill the intruders. If it gets out of hand THEN panic, but Hey, Zeus, Kristo - a fever is GOOD more often than not!

I don't do "Medieval", dude - too mild and a bit Eurocentric for my tastes. I do "Old Testament"!
-
Mind if we all frame that and hang it on our practice room walls? If you don't have anything better (and SURELY you do!), knock yourself out!

Or maybe she was married to Webster Lewis at one point?

I'm not familiar with Lucho, and AMG/Google searches turn up nothing. But he sounds like he'd be GREAT! As for the connection between Art & Pan-Art, I honestly don't know. Pan-Art seems to have shut down around the time Castro took over, but the catalogue and label name opereated out of Hialeah (sp?), Florida for quite a while. I've seen Pan-Art CDs, but I don't know who puts them out. This Art label might be run by the same people, but honestly, organ was not used in any of the Cuban music in the 50s that I've heard, and that's what Pan-Art is, mostly. If Lucho was active then, I'd LOVE to hear it!
-
A wise move, to be sure, as long as one is not expecting "Latin-Jazz" or some similar "modern" hybrid. This stuff is Cuban/Afro-Cuban to the core. And be aware that the crooner stuff is a bit, uh, NOT COOL! :D Good rule of thumb - it the chicks on the cover look like virgins, REAL virgins, it's a crooner album, and it's best to leave it alone. Otherwise, dive on in!

Looks like my mom's neighbor's work truck to me...
-
Hey man, you jest... No, I don't! The original flip-side to "The Chipmunk Song" was an instrumental thing called "Almost Good" that is as close as a Monk/Silver hybrid over Krupa-esque "jungle" toms and hand clapping can come to being jazz without actually BEING jazz! Never on CD, to my knowledge, and perhaps never even on LP. Gotta find an old Liberty 45 to hear it. Now THAT'S a mystery record!

Tequila was the female vocalist on Young's Arista dates.
