  1. All I have is a cassette dub. Someday...
  2. On a more pleasant note (in several ways...), remember this?
  3. Speaking of Rednecks...
  4. The first bridge on "Just Squeeze Me" locks into about as perfect a pocket as I've ever heard.
  5. I seem to remember something similar in the late 60s, only w/o the video game aspect. "Alpha State", "Biofeedback", or something like that. And isn't this similar to what Scientology claims to do, training your brain waves to reach a "clear" state, or some such? Be afraid, be VERY afraid... I'll stick to the tried and true methods , thak you very much. If you need a machine, that's too modern for me!
  6. I hate it when cats use Miles' changes on the bridge of "Well, You Needn't" instead of Monk's. And speaking of Monk's changes and fake books, let's not... (the new "official" one excepted, of course)
  7. Alto popped up for a quick minute in the mid-late 70s, as did another Rose label, Ozone. I grabbed as many as I could, which unfortunately, wasn't anywhere near all of them. The album titles were sometimes, uh, "different", as is the case with the one you just got. My all-time favorite Rose album title is a Monk item called "Spastic And Personal". Beat THAT!
  8. Airchecks from Boris Rose. Rose's label. Don't have that particular one.
  9. When it comes to "Sh'Boom", there is The Crew Cuts version, which is a Weapon Of Mass Emasculation that needs to be totally eradicated from the American Consciousness, and The Chords' original version on Atlantic, which is sublimely swinging (you could even call it jazz in this regard), with a marvellous tenor solo by (I think) Sam Taylor, and which is welcome on my turntable ANYTIME!
  10. You cannot be a Marvin Gaye completionist without certain Moonglows sides. Anybody heard how they do "Blue Velvet"? Magic.
  11. Binding to the point of cutting off circulation!
  12. The Moonglows RULE! If you don't yet know this, take the time to learn it, because it is true. And the Flamingos thing on "Eyes" has a groove to die for, no shit. Certain many jazz players should be able to ride the pocket like that. And that wrap-araound swath of massive reverb air-conditioning just seals the deal. Yeah, I dig doo-wop, because each night I ask the stars up above, "Why must I be a teenager in love?" 1,2,3...Look at Mr. Lee! Oh HELL yeah I love doo-wop!
  13. Any cavities filled?
  14. Chuck, did you ever have the opportunity to catch her with Jug?
  15. Ain't THAT the truth!
  16. I snooze, I lose. "Now's The Time" it is.
  17. When I die (and if I keep slammin' the McGriddles, that could be any day now...), the franchise is YOURS!
  18. Not until you also get SONG FOR MOTHER E on Leo! An unheralded GEM of an organ record!
  19. I'll give you 49.9% of the North American publishing and a composer's credit. That's my best offer. Deal?

Ah, the spelling bugaboo strikes again! Thanks, Jan!
  21. Well, the restaurant thing is good, because it provides giggage, but it's kinda NOT good, because it tends to attract people who ant jazz as a lifestyle accessory, if you know what I mean. They don't want jazz, they want "jazz". That's a drag, but so is unemployment... OTOH, if we had to depend on REAL jazz fans to support a scene, how much of a scene would there be? In a lot of cities, that would mean musicians and a relatively small handful of other folks. Whoopie! If that's not the scene in the town "you're" (meaning whoever reads this), congratulations! Let's face it - in most of America, jazz is really not a music that has relevance to most people other than some vague "image" to draw upon as needed (which is very seldom, and is usually very shallowly). The "smooth" stuff seems to be an exception, though. So what's the message THERE, huh? Well, I think there are several, some good, and some not good, but the bottom line (get me started on this in detail and I'll type all damn day, which I do NOT have the time for...) is that for most folks, going out to hear the same old same old played by cats who don't really care if they're playing for an audience or in a jam session by themselves is not something that's going to be, un, "endearing". So you can play "Just Friends" really, REALLY well. B.F.D.. Can you play it really, REALLY well WITH PERSONALITY, offer people something besides a sample of what got you an "A" in improv class? Can you tell a story that somebody wants to hear? If you can't, either play something you CAN tell a story on (even if it's...gasp...COMMERCIAL SOUNDING  ) or else keep your jazz playing to yourself. If watching data entry turned people on, then the offices of America would come replete with bleachers, no? Well, listening to a bunch of cats who know all the answers before the questions are even going about routinely giving the correct answers to every question asked is about like the musical equivalent of data entry. You'd think that this much would be evident to all concerned, but I guess not...
  22. Now you're REALLY scaring me - "L.R.T" was MY first thought too! But upon further review, I thought that maybe "Bye-Ya" might be more singable by the masses. But maybe not... What I'm REALLY thinkng is that to make this thing work, it's going to take an ORIGIANL song, one that capitalizes on the image and cachet of cool that Monk has without actually USING any of it. You know, sell the image, not the substance. People LIKE that, ya'know! Anybody want a McGriddle? The syrup's baked in, ya'know.
