  1. I was in the room last night for Bruckner 4. Fabio Luisi seemed to want to take a lyrical approach, which made it pretty, but loooong. I think I prefer van Zwedin's calculated taffy pull approach.
  2. Many happy returns!
  3. She also wrote lyrics to a few early Ornette songs. And I think she was in Van Morrison's world at some point?
  4. Coco del Morocco - Gettin' Tight!!!
  5. $8 for a download is not streaming. YouTube is streaming. What am I missing? That big band looks interesting. Hale Smith?!?!?!?
  6. The vocal trio of: Superman Supergirl Superdog
  7. Or how PR works to feed them the slop for which those kind of statements signal a potentially ravenous appetite. Or how an artist can shift to playing to their PR instead of to their instinct. Which has absolutely nothing to with "commerciality". That's to do with intent. Instinct is something else altogether!
  8. Not jazz per se (although I couldn't imagine it being what it is without a pretty keen jazz awareness), looking to spend the next week or so delving into some of the later electronic music of İlhan Mimaroğlu. Early indications are that it's gonna be a fun ride!
  9. When did Contemporary get bought by Fantasy? 197?
  10. Rufie Hopkins - The Playing's The Thing!!!
  11. Yeah, dance like nobody's looking, do that.
  12. I've yet to be disappointed by Benny Carter's playing. Spunky!
  13. Same. Bought it out of a cutout bin, as I was able to do with more than a few SE sides in the mid 70s. Still wondering about how so much inventory got dumped seemingly at once.
  14. The album with Bley/The Lost Chords is truly magnificent. He displays a lyricism that inhabits Bley's writing in a most poignant manner.
  15. Sure about this one - 2022 was the year that I took a really deep dive into the world of Carla Bley. As with Ra, a full(er) picture arrived, and it was beautiful.
  16. How old is this set? Don't know Fresu outside of the record he did with Carla Bley, but that one was great!
  17. We are, thanks! Same for you and yours!
  18. This one is kind of a house classic, from what I understand. The original was on Mondo Grosso's MG4, which itself is a very good record. But this remix takes on a life of its own (as the best remixes do) The melody itself (when it arrives) is a thing of wonder as far as I'm concerned. It's just what she does, finds all sort of unconventional twists and turn inside traditional general grooves. Here's the original Star Suite:
  19. Glad to hear that!

    Mick Goodrick

    Yeah, RIP.
  21. I have heard it. Don't own it. Julius Watkins was apparently a very interesting person. They called him "The Phantom" because you could only be sure of knowing where he was was at the gig itself. Otherwise, nobody knew where he went or what he did. He just showed up at the gig, played it, and then disappeared again. Great player, imo. He played a totally jazz language, never allowed the inherent difficulties of the instrument to appear in his playing.
  22. Big Al is back! Also agree about the scarcity. It was not in the shops around here at all. Maybe at Peaches, but maybe not. I got my copy used at Nicholas Potter - Bookseller, a nifty bookstore in Santa Fe that had a weird mix of used records in a bin at the back of the store. The sticker says that I paid $7.00 for it. For whatever reason, Woody's next Contemporary side, Song Of Songs, was easily found.
  23. Stalton Renticent - The Instigator!!!
