    Nat King Cole

it's Nat with the Basie band, check it out: and yes, Gordon Jenkins can be an, uh...acquired taste, but this is a good record, period: This CD set is pretty much indispensable
  2. Afraid not.
  3. Anything you do, I'll say it's just got to be that way. RCA mid-60s was on a very quiet roll...JW, JJ, Lockjaw, Wild Bill...and of course, Duke.
  4. At this point, anybody who goes to a Rangers game is living with Stockholm Syndrome.
  5. Thank you for your participation, and for some pretty astute comments. I never put my BFTs together with the "guessing game" as Goal #1. I like to get listeners impressions and opinions first, always. As for the "narrative flow"...that's something that I really don't expect people to figure out, since it's largely in my imagination. But - you did pick up on that there IS one, even if not the one to which you allude. Kudos, and feel free to come back for more if and when the urge occurs. We're here all month!
  6. It appears to be this person/people: oki music - YouTube But both this and BFT #4...I have no way of knowing who made the record for sure. I evenhave a copy of the record on BFT #4, and there is no indication as tho who/what/when/where/etc. HAven't examined the dead wax yet, though.... Not claiming any great expertise on this area, but I have dug around enough to know that the DJ culture did have an area of people who would make a mix and then get a very limited quantity of 12" singles pressed up for distribution to clubs/fellow/DJs, very much NOT going for the mass exposure. and even though it's on YouTube, this Ellington/Beyonce thing doesn't seem like it's making a play to become an "influencer" or anything like that. It all seems a bit underground, an I like that!
  7. Mike Judge, yeah, that I can see.
  8. Jonucleyus Riverbottom - There I Stand - Me!!!
  9. Here's that Duke/Beyonce mashup:
  10. Alban Berg Joe Albany Damita Jo
  11. Thanks for your participation, open mind/ears, and for listening to everything and finding some kind of connection to something you already know. Whether you realize it or not, you're on to something about the selection here...
  12. A strong voice for a long time. RIP. As somebody who grew up in racist redneck country and as a result dismissed pretty much all Country Music via guilt-by-association for far too long, all I can say about Lorretta Lynn when she was going full on STRONG, all I can say is...wow.
  13. Flip Lidd - Crispy!!!
  14. No sir.
  15. Again, thank you for participating, and thank you for your honest, informed opinions. Much appreciated!
  16. Jo, it's an honor to have you participating here! Your reputation long precedes you, and has been borne out by your excellent contributions as compiler.
  17. Far more interesting than Neal Hefti, but not as interesting as Robert Freedman

    BFT222

Hey, as long as you're online, go ahead and hit mine. It's only 8 tunes and 40:40. Easy!!!
  19. Was Bob doing Bob in the charts or was he role-playing? Not that those are always going to be different things, but Bob had a very broad set of skills
  20. Happy birthday, soulpope!
  21. It's his hair. He has GREAT hair!
  22. Kikoski is on a lot of records, but not as many as some other people. David Kikoski - Wikipedia On the latest Monday album, he plays accordion, which by itself doesn't really mean anything, but it does show that he's not one of these "retro" guys who is going to sit there all of their life and regurgitate until they die. I'm a fan of that, just in principle!
  23. Kikoski can be pretty interesting. His most interesting playing, imo, is on some Monday Michiru albums, but his other works also show him to be a personal thinker more often that not. Check him out on this one, where he finds a way to "merge" the techniques of Ahmad Jamal & McCoy Tyner.
