  1. So this is three records, right? And David Lee is on two of them?
  2. That's them! Jingles...you might be surprised at who was doing jingles. A lot of talent there! If you're old enough, this was a group that you have heard, somewhere, and never had a clue who they were. It's...
  3. Sooner or later.
  4. Seabees Seals Phish
  5. It's the same way with jazz. The NYC-centric paradigm worked when the world was so unconnected. We needed a hub. That's not the way it is now. And as much as the lack of a national consensual viewpoint on damn near anything is going to be our demise, the way to prevent it is not going to be to drive people away because they can't be bothered to give a damn even to be pissed off. The 20th Century gets further away every day!
  6. Evans Bradshaw Tiny Bradshaw Terry...Pollard!!!
  7. .Junior Parker is one of those guys whose work can be used to touch a lot of bases if the umpires allow it. And vice-versa...his records with Jimmy McGriff often laugh - proudly laugh - in the face of the notion of "boundaries". Not everything "works", but talk about just not giving a damn... Did Joe Williams ever cover this one? I got no problem with using Freddie Roach to shine a light on Junior Parker...and vice-versa!
  8. Billy Bauer & Woody Herman? Back a long long time ago?
  9. Freddie Roach is easily overlooked by the more rigid "jazz purists". Possibly because he did lean heavily forward into the more R&B (in the wrong hands, little more than a marketing term) side of jazz, and he did make an album with a vocal group. But it is perhaps the best of that idiom, imo. I mean, ok, if that feeling is not relevant to your lifestyle, ok. But it is certainly relevant to a lot of other things! And his liner notes...there's no mistake about what is music is saying. Exemplary! He also made a few albums on Prestige that are equally community-oriented. Ver interesting music, all of it. And then, the story goes, he decided to be a playwright (which is really not surprising) and nobody ever heard from him again? But yeah, Freddie Roach! For the "jazz purists", there this is: No baseball here!
  10. You are correct about Brookmeyer!
  11. No, it's not Chase. But it's definitely a jukebox-centric aim with the record. DubModal got the gist of it in that regard. If you really want to sleuth, you can look at the Singers Unlimited individuals backgrounds, and two of them will have a group in common that you are almost certainly totally unaware of. I know I sure was. But with the Internet being the generous soul that it is...you can go from totally ignorant about a group to being instant expert in a couple of clicks. Glad to know that Harold is alive. He's got stories to tell!
  12. There is more Conrad Lester available on record than there is Percy France...which still is not very much! But not all of it shows him to the advantage that this record does. To add even more "whatever" to the bow-tying, some compilers like to have both a theme and a narrative in how you can get there frome here. This is not Bert & I...

    Nat King Cole

I wonder how many times that song was recorded on Capitol....and how much in royalties Johnny Mercer made from them. Hey, if you own a stake in the label and you got good songs, why not?
  14. My bad about Burrell then. I was going from memory, not always the most reliable tool.... But that is the cut - "Two Different Worlds" Same song as Track 8.

    Nat King Cole

Joe Comfort...the man who made Sinatra swing (a bit of an oversimplication, but I'll take it). One of the unsung heroes of American Popular music.
  17. Yep!

    Nat King Cole

It's closer to one of the dark Sinatra albums, definitely. For a single cut, this is absolute perfection. Total pocket, and thank your diety of choice that this is preserved on a record. There is nothing else where the band so totally gives it up. Perfection, every single note. and I don't think you get that without Nat taking that tempo and making sweet foreplay love to it.
  19. Nope, none of them. Great players, though, whose names should also not be forgotten! There's only a finite number of organists to run through before you land on this player. Somebody will get it eventually! Mid-month clues coming the latter part of next week. As for track one, here's an early one - this artist did not record on small, back room labels with sketchy distribution. And oh - thanks for making time to listen. I know post-hurricane is probably still making demands on your time. And if everything is back to normal, hey, thanks even more!

    Nat King Cole

it's Nat with the Basie band, check it out: and yes, Gordon Jenkins can be an, uh...acquired taste, but this is a good record, period: This CD set is pretty much indispensable
  21. Afraid not.
  22. Anything you do, I'll say it's just got to be that way. RCA mid-60s was on a very quiet roll...JW, JJ, Lockjaw, Wild Bill...and of course, Duke.
  23. At this point, anybody who goes to a Rangers game is living with Stockholm Syndrome.
