Well there it is! And I have that record too...shame on me.
  2. Speaking of Lionel Hampton...Arnett Cobb and Illinois Jacquet. Only got stronger as the years passed. playing wise. And not-coincidentally, both were well-served by both the Prestige )although at different times) and Black & Blue.labels. And also by Milt Buckner!
  3. The blue one is certainly fine, but there's a reason they put the green one out right away, imo. That thing is...talk about breathing fire, on that one, he's breathing and exhaling it! Jackie was, I think, still deciding whether or not he wanted to fully commit to playing again on that first Montmartre album. The ongoing encounters with other players (Dexter, Bartz, and then Rene) were critical in getting his mind made up, or so it seems.

  5. Well, they're somebody's kids...
  6. "Apparently"...Warne gave Lew some vibe/shade/whatever at one point (maybe at the session itself?) for playing "black style" when he was not black. Both Lee & Warne took pride in that they developed their own original, personal voices that didn't copy black voices. Inspired by, yes. Copied, no.
  7. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SteepleChase_Records The first Steeplechase record was: Haven't listened to the two in question here for decades. I do seem to remember one being more friskier than the other onw (records, not people). Back in the day, these all came out on Inner City and that was sweet, didn't have to hassle with trying to find imports in stores. The "news" wasn't about Dexter, Dexter had a steady stream of records on Prestige, but Jackie, who had disappeared for too long. "What's Jackie up to now?" that was the question. Steeplechase gave plenty of answers. Plus they also gave us this incendiary document of a 1966 Left Bank performance that is not for the faint of heart! Jackie had chilled out since then, for neither better nor worse, just...life happening.

  11. Not totally, but look at the head shape and the eyes... Maybe not...Lincoln Perry's height is given as 5'10"" and this guy is a lot shorter than that.
  12. Quite. Cuber was coming to play every time out back, then, it seems, be it with Maynard Ferguson or Lionel Hampton or George benson or Lonnie Smith or Eddie Palmieri, jsut everybody, didn't matter.

I do think it perversely funny to talk about Fresh Dound "reissuing" too much of anything...
  15. Misposted this in an incorrect thread, but yeah, Lionel Hampton! To which was given this response: To which I replied: So there.
  16. I think a lot of people are still scared of/by that music. It's pretty damn uncompromising. Ferociously so. You either deal with it entirely on its own terms or else you don't deal with it at all, there's no "safe entry". Not even the Lost Quintet at it's wildest was like that, not like this

You can buy the downloads. I assume the Presto site is legit? Or not?

Well, when 2024 comes, it looks like they'll have properly done digital files waiting for them!
  19. I love Jeanne Lee, just the sound of her voice. She moves air in a way that just defies resistance for me. After that, hey whatever, I'm already all in.
  20. Thanks! The implications of that resume imply a world of experience. Percussionists are often way ahead of everybody else's curved, at least in my experience!
