  1. Hey, I'm with you. Those Lucky sides are unique, and uniquely good!
  2. By "the LPs", do you also have the Friday the 13th Cook Count Jail LP, which has half a side of Lucky that is not live at all but is very good. Example: Sonny Lester playing games again ...
  3. I like how he says "let's get down let's get down let's get down", sounds like he means it and he knows what he's talking about about.
  4. Art Webb
  5. It's supposedly a REALLY good paying gigs and all of those guys get plenty of work elsewhere. They're excellent players, so it's not like there's a drop in quality, and hey, the feel appreciated past the money. Not all singers gigs are like that.
  6. It's a subtle thing, but once this dude took me to school on it, I appreciated it. New Orleans drummers...yeah!
  7. A drummer friend of mine goes to the mat for James Black with Yusef!
  8. The OG AJQ was late 50s- early 60s iirc? And then there's this one: Down-home!!!!!!!!
  9. Up to a point....but never fully. They always (at her insurance IIRC) made room for her piano I'm a bit surprised that she's not had her movie song moment. Or has she! I'd not be the one to know that.
  10. Sarahhired a piano player. So did Carmen McRae. Ella was a big band singer. Shirley Horn defended her position quite nicely.
  11. This one is interesting:
  12. I don't have access to his emails. I would hope that he does Pop star? What was her big hit? Sure, she was marketed with glamor and married a rock star, but she herself? I doubt she merits "celebrity", much less "pop star".
  13. Shouldn't she be retired by now?
  14. Plano is not without such.
  15. He was (sorta) reviewing a show, not teaching a Music Appreciation class. Not my title. That was the headline of the review, copied and pasted verbatim.
  16. Sorry about that.. it was in my Google news feed and didn't have a paywall for me. I hate paywalls.
  17. https://www.mercurynews.com/2025/05/17/review-diana-krall-concert-tour-mountain-winery-saratoga/ I mean, I'm not a big fan or anything, but truth is truth!
  18. Jazz can be boring. It often is! No different than anything else. Sure, ok. But that duet album with Harris is actually interesting. Eddie is throwing curves and Ellis is seeing them. And it gets out a few times as well. Unexpected treat!
  19. I like Ellis' duet record with Eddie Harris. So there's that
  20. Yess, quite. But if I have one criticism, it's that the endings too often seem arbitrary and maybe too long in coming.
  21. Hawnty Skadillicus and The Jed Phrase Trio - Live at Doodlebug's!!! Equos Dividicci - Where Would You Go If You Were Already There?
  22. Slisper Cadillna - Ho Ko Soomy!!!
  23. I've only picked up 5 of the CDs, ones that were for sale cheap at Berkshire. I like them. The notion of "conduction" certainly leaves open the possibility of fraudulence, but I don't get that here. There's a true sense of underlying form in the service of the spontaneity (or is it the other way around?). I think I've seen the same piece as Rod, and yeah, comes of as a bit pompous. But oh well. I'm playing his records, not renting him a spare bedroom.
