  1. I think that "Everybody's Jumpin'" is the secret source of Steely Dan. Not the whole thing, just parts, and I don't know if it was conscious, but there's a part or two where it's, ok, this is damn near almost every Steely Dan song in a nutshell. Yeah, I jumped on a copy of that just for the cover. The record was beat to hell, but that was beside the point.
  2. Herbie got this.
  3. That's some amazing breath control....Jo Stafford definitely had her own zone of mojo.
  4. They put the 10" jacket inside a 12" jacket?
  5. Why? Maybe not clubs plural, but wasn't Paris on the cutting edge of Exotic Negritude? Or was this before any of that started happening? I guess what I'm asking is, how did Stravinsky get the sheet music to begin with?
  6. Did Stravinsky keep out of clubs or cafes or wherever it was where people went to hang out and get a taste of the new? I mean, if there was sheet music, somebody could play it anywhere
  7. Is that Duke the Musicraft stuff? If so, Prestige had it in a 24000 series release that was a subject of endless fascination afaic...

  10. After worlds collide, you can either go looking for the new old you or the old new you....or...just enjoy the new now and take it from there, because worlds are always colliding. The old you is never what you thought it was, and the new you can only be what you let it be.
  11. You're on the white twack, baby!
  12. It's the odd boy that doesn't like sport.
  13. $20.00 for a 20 minute 10" LP? Five songs plus an interview? Not now...but good to know that it exists. And that the gig itself existed. I admit, though, I am curious...
  14. Know about them since the mid-70s. Very much enjoy them, or have enjoyed them, not really anything "new" at this point. But definitely recommend them to anybody who might care!
  15. I just wonder what her backstory was. What she added to the palate was not there before or since, not ALL of it. I don't get the sense that she was anything other than fully developed when she got there, so...where did all that happen?
  16. Is it true that Huey Newton used that as his walk-on music?

  18. These retroactive labels are like points on a ruler...how "long" something is has nothing to do with it actually being there to begin with...or, really how it even got there to begin with As a starting point, yeah, maybe necessary to get people to pay attention. But the sooner you can let go of any of it as a unique/specific "genre", the healthier you will likely be.
  19. Is there a decent biographical sketch (or more) about June Tyson anywhere? This thing has gotten into my brain and can't get out...reaffirms my core belief that "intonation" is a crutch for people who don't understand pitch, which is itself a crutch for people who don't really understand sound, which is in turn a crutch for people who don't understand that all of life is simply a combination of vibrations of one sort or another. Not that I'm anywhere near there myself, I'm just trying to get thee myself. But that's where it all leads, I'm convinced. Ra, otoh, I think he was already there. His business model was a concession of the particular plane he found himself in, but what else was he going to do, trust the industry? Or own yourself best you can?

  21. But apparently you could buy food, at least chicken and cake...and besides some biscuits, what else would you need, really?
  22. Where you really want to go is not with he heads, but the places they all live. It's not a ghost town, it's a spirit word, the difference being is it full-bodied current life or leftover past life. Current corporeal condition is hardly the point!
  23. Dirk Benedict Arnold Stang
  24. There were whispers that Miles had contracted AIDS, so yeah, he probably was aware the his time was limited.
