  1. An unassuming, rewarding set of piano trio. Mulgrew Miller came to play and nobody had a problem with that.
  2. Who is releasing this? I hope it's a better...curated presentation than this: https://www.dustygroove.com/item/939151?sf=avant+garde&incl_oos=1&incl_cs=1&kwfilter=avant+garde&sort_order=artist It's a good frame to put around this music, which was, in its own ways, as much relevant to "the culture" as was the pop music it was inspiring. Pop artists tend to have aspirations more than deep skills, so this stuff is a well upon which to draw. Not a knock on the aspirational but less skilled, quite the opposite, their willingness to go there keeps the flow going, and of course, what goes around comes around. I do hope this is a good and thoughtful presentation and not some PD mishmash with liners that name drop with out illumination. If it is, hey, count me in, a good compilation is a nifty thing to have around!
  3. Has Riley always played a King? I'm glad to see him with hair, too!

  7. Went out(!!!!!) to catch Helene Grimauld with the DSO last night, Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor...I don't know if I've ever experience a freer-feeling playing in my life, at least not in this musical world. Her playing was like running water. Amazing experience.
  8. When we look back on this episode of our history, what will stand out above everything else will not be the deaths, the hospitalizations, the collective insecurities, no, what will stand out will be how inconvenienced we were.
  9. Legend = quality of reputation. (Un)sung = degree to which said reputation has prolificated.
  10. I'm sick of having to drive inside the lines. Fuck these other people, let me drive free, my car, my road.
  11. Old enough story to have been in the original, but mental health issues were not openly/freely discussed back then, especially not in what was ostensibly a "kid's book".

  13. Mouse and The Traps Robin Hood Brians Tucker Frye
  14. Furman Bisher was around - and already kind of a "senior figure" - when I was a kid! I think I got a first edition, for Christmas in 1966 or something. Couple of other books from this same series too. They were written for kids, but are fun for fans of any age! Check this out, Bill James writes and appreciation as well as that possible update that's never yet happened: https://www.billjamesonline.com/strange_but_true_turns_50/

  16. Apparently the great state of Tennessee has this all under control!
  17. uh.... The opening cut is really nifty, an orchestral piece both composed and orchestrated by Tony. That he did the orchestration is what caught my eye, because...Tony was a study-er, and his work on this is not that of a beginner or a dabbler. Composition, yes, there had been that, but orchestration is a whole other skill. Would have loved it if he had lived longer and developed/presented that side of his talent, I bet there would have been something there worth hearing. Otherwise, some nice enough things, but it's got that evil tinniness of unevolved digital to it. That, and Michael Brecker. Either way pretty heavy load for me that I can only sometimes make with this one. But that orchestra piece is totally wonderful.
  18. Alban Berg Joe Albany Helen of Troy
