It's a " leftovers" album, so don't rush, if you know what I mean.

John Mayall First Generation 1965-74 **35 CD Set** Coming

Would that have been Midnight Special or Rock Concert? Hate to send anybody off on a wild goose chase looking for footage. -
Waffle House is permanently open. No kidding, in the middle of the summer wave of the pandemic, when Texas restaurants were closed for everything except carry out and drive through, there was a lady sitting at a card table in the parking lot with a hand-painted sign that said "drive-thru Waffle House" and she had a line. I hope they still have that sign in the back room.

What that tells me is that Jazz Times readers have heard all the same records that everybody's heard and none of the ones that not everybody has. You can be surprised about that if you want to, I'm not. Other than those early LPs with Lockjaw and one early '70s Milestone two - fer,, there were, at least to my immediate memory, no Griffin records readily available here in the US until maybe the Tokyo record that came out on Inner City and then the Galaxy records. Griffin's "comeback" was maybe a year or so after Dexter's but it was even more profound in terms of record availability. Most of the Dexter Blue Notes stayed in print. None of the Griffin Riversides did, obviously, but neither did they reap the benefit of the seventies two_fer reissue boom. I bet a lot of newer listeners were rediscovering Johnny Griffin before ever discovering him!

Not everybody can host a game show.

Stein /Kimmel had one of the great yin_yang comedy partnerships in TV history, imo. Totally, obviously, different world views, but both smart as hell and ready for a laugh. Must watch TV indeed!

I'd almost like to see Ben Stein get the gig, but I think Ben Stein is congenitally unable to totally shred the snark. Still...

Irvin Mayfield has long been exposed as a scoundrel. Ronald Markham I've not heard of, but dogs/fleas birds/feathers etc. Here's the hometown rundown: https://www.nola.com/news/courts/article_a4844062-22de-11eb-8ded-17190a5a85fa.html LOL line of the day: However, Kelly promised that the sentencing hearing will show the story is much more complicated than a simple tale of greed. He suggested the flashy expenses highlighted in the indictment helped contribute to the sleek New Orleans Jazz Market building. "As we will show to the judge, you don’t make a multi-million dollar deal for the city of New Orleans at a Waffle House. What remains today is a state-of-the-art building in Central City on Oretha Castle Haley, thanks to Irvin Mayfield and Ronald Markham," Kelly said. "There’s no Swiss bank account." I mean, why the hell not, I think you can do ANY damn thing at a Waffle House, that seems to have been my experience.

https://www.rogerebert.com/mzs/love-you-madly-dave-zoller-1941-2020 Talking with Dave Zoller about music, or more accurately, listening to Dave Zoller talk to you about music with you while you occasionally had a chance to interject a comment or observation, was one of them more fascinating things one could do at a party. The guy knew a LOT about EVERYTHING, and had opinions about all of it. One of those guys where "just shut up and listen" was the way to go, always. I mean, who else could casually throw out a line like, :just what exactly DID Wesley LaViolette do to Jimmy Giuffre anyway?" and then pivot to a conversation about the difference between Berg (you can sing it!) & Schoenberg (not very friendly!), all of which began as a conversation about Don Costa's charts for Sinatra & Strings? I mean, yeah, I'll listen to that type of taking anytime, no problem. Most memorable exchange: "Hey man, you should be playing out more" Nah man, I don't practice enough. "Man you make awkwardness an art form. You should play out more, really". He knew that I am a stutterer, and he was telling me that I played like how I talked, and that it was a good thing, just do it. RIP. and lord will I miss being talked to by that guy. I'm thankful for being able to listen.
