I listened to as much of the YouTube videos as I could take and think that it's not as horrible as the Poobahs are ranting about. But it's not very good either. At least not by my standards. It sounds like any number of people who learn a little bit of piano and then play at parties full of people who don't play any piano, who are then dazzled by a few non-triadic chords and non-diAtonic modulations. Wow! But still and all... it's amateur, but it's not incompetent. Those are two different things. People just need to chill out and everybody play their own gigs. You choose your own path and then do your best to maximize it. Andre 3000 is not stealing audiences from Matthew Shipp and Ethan Iverson. They should be happy about that, actually...

It's a great date, but like I said, unissued here until 1992, and not well known domestically. Maybe the allegedly surreptitious nature of the original recording held it back here? But internationally it's had a good run. Well worth scoping out and imo the best representation of that edition of the Messengers on record Make mine Chico!!!

That's the one. Didn't see a US release of any kind until 1992 on RCA Bluebird as Paris 1958 and then just as a single disc. This is the session that Benny Golson recounts as showing up for the gig and seeing recording microphones set up, asking Blakey what was up with that, and never getting a straight answer - or any extra money. Maybe that was one reason for the fire, along with Hazel Scott!

So much of the discussion was (and apparently still is) about the Lewis/Jackson relationship, but...Percy Heath and Connie Kay were where the glue was. Those other two guys could yin/yang their asses off, but it only worked because that glue was always stickying.

I've really come to appreciate Lewis' comping. He's always playing riffs and other "big band" type devices that create things that Heath and Kay can bounce off and around in some pretty funky ways.

It's the composer, that's how a composer turns a small group into an organized ensemble. I've never disliked him or the MJ@, but I really think that he last few years of the original run saw the band really finding another level.Starting with Blues at Carnegie Hall all the way through Blues on Bach. From 1966-1973. Things seemed to loosen up, breathe more, and Heath/Kay found some funk. It's by far my most consistently favorite MJQ.
